     The earliest permanent settlers of the Eastern panhandle of WV

were of the German element of Pennsylvania.  They forded the Potomac

at what is now Shepherdstown, then known as "The Old Pack Horse Ford.

This migration began as early as 1730 and in a few years, settlements

were established at Opequon, Tuscarora Creek, Cacapon and southwest to

the South Branch of the Potomac. In "The German Element of the

Shenandoah", John Wayland says, "Some of the names borne by this

contingent were: Strader, Bowman, Hite, Minnear, Stump, Snyder,

Woodford and Brake."

    Apparently, Stump or the German "Stumpf" was quite common and two

completely different people bearing the same name are often confused.

As early as 1781, there were two John Stumps in Maryland and they were

confused in a warrant for conduct disloyal to the Colonies. This paper

will concern Michael Stump I and his descendants who settled in

central WV.

    The following genealogy of Michael Stump I is from Thurman Stump's

"Michael Stump Sr. of Virginia, 1709-1768", pages 210-215.

    Hans Stumpff was born bout 1600.  He was a burgher in Erbach Am

Neckar in the pricipality of Hessen-Darmstadt in Germany.

    Diterich Stumpff, a son of Hans Stumpff, was born in Erbach about

1636 and died before 1725.  He married Anna Catherine Muff April 26,

1664.  Anna, a daughter of Andreas Muff, was born about 1642 and died

January 24, 1725.

    Diterich was a burgher, a raftsman and fisherman in Ehrbach.

     Hans Michael Stump, a son of Hans Peter and Anna Catherine (Rudinger) Stumpff, was born in Germany March 17, 1709 and died in Hampshire County VA (WV) in 1767/68.  He married Maria Catherine Neff in  Tulpehocken, Lancaster County PA September 10, 1739. Catherine was born in Germany and died in Hardy County, VA (WV) in 1783.

    Thurman R. Stump's "Michael Stump Sr. of Virginia 1709-1768" states, "... Michael Senior was born in Eberbach am Neckar in the principality of Hessen-Darmstadt of the Germanies."  "The marriage record and records of the children's births have not been found to date. The likelihood of ever finding them seems to be a remote thing at best. An unsuccessful search for them was concluded recently."

   In volume X of the records of the Pennsylvania Folklore Society: "Date of entry at Philadelphia, September 30, 1743- Ship Phoenix. Hans Michael Stumpf, wife Maria Catherina, and one child, born October 22, 1741 named Maria Catherina, in Germany." Note the original spelling of the family name was "Stumpf", Michael had a first name, Hans, and Catherine had a first, Maria, although VA records omit these names.

     Traditional family history says that George Washington either suggested or agreed to the shorter version of the name. Possibly, Washington helped the family to Anglicize their names.

     Apparently, Michael and others had an agreement with Lord Fairfax, because the family was living on Stump Run, a tributary of the South Branch of the South Fork of the Potomac River long before George Washington surveyed the "Manor of Wappacomo" for Lord Fairfax in 1748.

     The Stump family home was in a developing country and the county changed as the years passed.  Originallly, they lived in Spottsylvania County, then Orange County was organized, followed by Frederick County.  In 1753, Hampshire County, VA was formed and included their holding.  Finally, Hardy County was formed in in 1785.  On June 20, 1863, the State of WV entered the Union. Therefore, records of the early Stumps are found in four counties and two states.

    The earliest official record mentioning Michael is: "Augusta County, June 18, 1746- Daniel Richardson, Michael Stump and Benjamin Harden to review road petition of Richard Crunk."

     Reverend L. Schnell, a Moravian missionry, noted in his diary: "March 19-30, 1747 Then I visited several other families more and lodged with Michael Stumpf."

     George Washington surveyed Wappacomo Manor for George Fairfax in

1848.  A quotation from Washington's diary for March 1748:

"Tues. 29" This morning went out and surveyed five hundred acres of land, and went down to Micael Stump's on ye S. Fork  of ye Branch, on our way shot two wild turkies."

"Wednesday 30th" "This morning began our intended business of laying of lots.  We began at ye boundary line of ye northern 10 miles above Stumps.  The courses and distances of ye several lots layed off on ye So. Fork of Wappacomo, began March 30 lot ye list Peter Reed."

"Thursday 31st" "Early this morning one of our men went out with ye gun and soon returned with two wild turkeys.  we then went to our camping place at Stumps."

"Sat. 2nd" "Last night was blowing and rainy night, our straw catch'd a fire that we were laying upon and was luckily preserv'd by one of our men awaking when it was ablaze.  We run off our lots this day, which reached below Stumps.  Lot 10, Michael Caleb Liverson; Lot ye 11th, Leonard Nave; Lot 12th, Michael Stump."

     Michael's land grant is dated September 8, 1749 and is signed by Lord Fairfax. Michael's will is record in Hampshire County WV. It was dated July 2, 1767 and was probated March 8, 1768. The will is quoted on pages 85 and 86 of Thurman Stump's "Michael Stump Sr. of Virginia, 1709-1768."

"In the name of God Amen, I Michael Stump of the South Fork of the South Branch of Potowmack in the County of Hampshire in the Colliny of Virginia being in a perfect state of health at present but considering the uncertainty of it and that it is necessary for all men while they have the happiness to enjoy their sences and memory perfect to settle and dispose of their affairs in manner as may prevent any dispute of or law suits after their death amongst their friends and relatives therefore to prevent the same as much as possible in my own family

think proper to dispose of my estate in manner following viz.

 First I give to my Beloved Wife Catherine the one third part of the plantation whereon I now live together with its profits and appertainences also her full third part of whatever Personal Estate I die possessed of. I also give unto each of my three Daughters the sum of Fifty Pounds Currancy in lieu of lands given to their respective brothers as below will appear and that my Estate may not be divided and squandered away I direct the same to be only appraised and not

soulde.

 Item I give and Devise to my Eldest son Michael the Plantation whereon he now Lives Containing four hundred Acres Known by the Name of Lot Number two to him and his Heirs for Ever.

 Item I give and devise to my Second son George the Plantation on Lot No. thirteen Joyning to the lower part of the Plantation whereon I Now live Containing four Hundred Acres to him and his Heirs for Ever. Also I give unto him the said George and his heirs for Ever the Plantation Whereon I now live Except for a full third to his Mother During her Life as aforesaid.

 Item I give my Son Leonard A Plantation on Lot No. three Joyning to the Land given to my son Michael Containing near four Hundred acres to him and his heirs for Ever.

 Item I give to my Grandson Michael, the son of Michael aforesaid twenty Pounds Currancy to be Left in the hands of My Wife and aplyed towards the Schooling of Said Child

 Item and as for my Personal Estate and Negroes I bequeath in manner Following that is to say I give to my son George one Negroe Named Sampson.

 Item I also give to my son Leonard one Negroe Named Dick and all the residue of my Personal Estate not before mentioned with one Negroe Named Sam to be Equaly Divided Between my said Children Except the twenty Pounds left to my grandson which said twenty Pounds to be Deducted or taken off his Fathers Share of my Estate and to be aplyed to the use aforesaid.

 And lastly I do hereby nominate and appoint my said Wife Cathrine [sic] and my son George Executrix and Executor of this my Will hereby Revoking and making Void all Former Wills Declaring this and no other to be my last True Will and Testament

him for obtaining a Probate thereof in due form giving security

whereupon they together with the said Felix Seymour Leonard Hiet and

Martin Chol their Securities entered into ande acknowledged Bond in

the Penalty of Five Thousand Pounds for their due and faithful

Administration of the said Decedents Estate and Performance of his

Amen.  I, Catharine Stump, of Hampshire County and state of VA, blessed by God, do this fourth day of Dec. 1783 - make and publish this my last will and testament, in manner following, that is to say all living apparel that I have in my name to be equally divided between Catharine Brake, Elizabeth Welton and Magdaline Yokum.  Likewise, all the household furniture and wooden ware that is in my name, to be divided as above unto the said girls,

and if any horses or cattle be left at my death, to be divided equally amongst my five children, that is to say Michael and Leonard and three girls - and if any cash be left, to be equally divided amongst the above named five.  That is to say, Michael and Leonard and the three girls, but each of my daughters and their children to have their share of the money without the husband having any right or claim of any that they make use of it for their own necessary use, without their husbands having any right or demand upon the same, and

especially that Jacob Brake have none of this is my will concerning the money and likewise that you make an equal and just divide amongst yourselves, without any dispute or wrangle and whoever buries me, let them make their charge and let that be paid first.      Catharine Stump, a daughter of Hans Michael and Maria Catherine

(Neff) Stump,was born in Germany October 22, 1741 and died in Hardy

County VA (WV) after April 9, 1816.  She married Jacob Brake.  It is

believed that Jacob remained loyal to the King during the Revolution.

He was a brother of John Brake, a neighbor of the Stumps, a fierce

Loyalist who opposed the Colonial rebels so vigorously that it was

necessary to send soldiers to subdue his group.  Jacob may or may not

have been an active participant, but he earned his mother in law's

enmity, since she specified in her will that a sum of money left to

Catherine not be conveyed to Jacob Brake.

     Michael Stump II, a son of Hans Michael and Maria Catherine (Neff)

Stump, was born in VA November 21, 1744 and died in what is now Hardy

County WV June 17, 1799.

    Two sources differ on Michael's date of birth.  Paul Hardman's

"Stumps" gives the 1844 date, while Thurman R. Stump's "Michael Stump

Sr. of Virginia"  states "The above Michael Junior is the 1744 Hans

Michael Stumpf der Jung indentured to the woodworking trade in the

town of Eberbach of Hesse in the Germanies. As noted the year of birth

has been approximated as 1730 based upon the age for apprenticing

there at that time. No marriage record has been found to date. The

year of the marriage, 1765, has apparently been derived from the

oldest child's, Michael 3rd, known birthdate in the year 1766."

    Michael married Sarah Hughes in 1763 or 1765.  Sarah, a daughter

of Thomas and Mary (Baker) Hughes, and a sister of the well known

pioneers, Jesse and Elias Hughes, was born in 1746 and died in what is

now Hardy County June 15, 1821.

     When Michael attained his majority, his parents celebrated by a

gift and conveyance by deed of the land in Lot two containing 400

acres on October 8, 1765.  This same lot was later devised to him in

his father's will.

     Michael enlisted in the militia during Lord Dunmore's war and was

stationed at newly built Fort Culbertson in present day Summers

County, WV. In September 1774, he was at the Battle of Point Pleasant.

After his return home, he was commissioned a Lieutenant Colonel in the

VA militia, with the responsibility of organizing and training new

recruits in the Romney area.

     In response to a call from Governor Thomas Jefferson of VA,

Michael resigned his militia commission in 1781 and enlisted a company

of light infantry and led them to Fredericksburg, where they were

absorbed into General Weeden's Army. Michael was commissioned a

Captain in General Weeden's army. He participated in the siege of

Yorktown and was present for the British surrender.  Captain Stump and

his company were discharged in New Kent County VA in May 1781.  On

April 3, 1782,a claim was presented to the court in Orange County on

their behalf.

     After the Revolution, Michael served his county as a gentleman

Justice until his death. Apparently, Michael died unexpectedly, since

he left no will. An extensive sale bill of the property of Michael

Stump deceased, sold June 12, 1799, is recorded in Hardy County, WV

Will book 1, page 169.

     Sarah's will is recorded in Hardy County WV Will Book 3, Page

140:

    Will of Sarah Hughes Stump widow of Michael IInd, Deceased June

This my last will and testament, I give to my daughter Catherine's son

James, one mare colt.  And to my son Leonard's youngest daughter

Sarah, five dollars, and the rest of all mi property to three of mi

     George Stump, a son of Hans Michael and Maria Catherine (Neff)

Stump, was born in what is now Hardy County WV April 8, 1745 and died

there in 1829. His will is dated April 8, 1805.

    He married Elizabeth (Wilson) Massey in Hardy County VA August 16,

1768. The license states "...surety for the Widow Massey is father H.D.

Wilson." Elizabeth, a daughter of Henry D. and Martha Wilson, was born

April 30, 1749 and died in Hardy County VA (WV) October 23, 1829.

    George was born about the time that George Washington and George

Fairfax made their surveying tour of the South Branch of the Potomac and

camped at the Stump platation.  It has been suggested that he was named

for one or both of these notables.

    He was at one time Lieutenant-Commander of the Hardy County militia

and served the colonies during the Revolution and attained the rank of

Major.

     George and his mother were executors of Michael I's estate, under

a bond of five thousand pounds, an enormous sum for the times.

     A traditional family story states that George and George

Washington squirrel hunted together about 1779, with Michael III

carrying the squirrels.

     Leonard Stump, a son of Hans Michael and Maria Catherine (Neff)

Stump, was born in what is now Hardy County, WV November 21, 1749 and

died there November 19, 1826.  He married Elizabeth See. Elizabeth, a

daughter of George and Catharine See, was born February 28, 1754 and

died April 23, 1827.

     Leonard was a Lieutenant Colonel of the Hardy County Militia, and

may have served in the Revolution, since Josiah Hughes says in "The

Pioneers of WV" that all three of the Stump brothers gave service in

the cause of Independence.

     Elizabeth Stump, a daughter of Hans Michael and Maria Catherine

(Neff) Stump, was born in what is now Hardy County WV about 1750.  She

married Felix Welton, a son of Job Welton.  Felix's will was probated

September 12, 1815.  Elizabeth was living at that time.

     Michael Stump III, a son of Michael II and Sarah (Hughes) Stump,

was born in what is now Hardy County WV February 4, 1766 and died in

Lewis (now Gilmer) County VA (WV) March 27, 1834.  He came to Harrison

County VA (WV) with his uncle, Jesse Hughes and bought property on

Hacker's Creek in 1786.

     He married Magdalene Richards in Harrison County February 19,

1786.  Magdalene, a daughter of John and Sarah (Ellsworth) Richards,

was born October 7, 1768 and died June 11, 1832.

     Soon after their marriage, Indian hostilities were renewed and

Michael and his bride removed to his old home in Hardy County.  They

remained in Hardy County a number of years, for Michael IV could

clearly remember his grandfather, Michael II.

     The family moved to Steer Creek in what is now Gilmer County WV

May 6, 1804.  In all Gilmer County records, Michael III is listed as

"Michael Stump Sr.". At the time Michael moved to Steer Creek, it was

part of Harrison County VA.  In 1816, Lewis County was formed and

included the Stump homestead.  The area is now located in Gilmer

County, WV.

     Michael served as Sheriff of Lewis County VA for six years and

was appointed county surveyor of Gilmer County VA (WV) when that

County was formed from Lewis County in 1845.  He was granted several

parcels of land in Harrison County, comprising thousands of acres.

     For more than seventy five years, Michael's final resting place

was marked by a plain flat sandstone.  A great grandson, Dr. Leland J.

Stump, began a campaign amongst Michael's descendants to erect a

fitting monument.  Each descendant was asked to contribute a dime.  On

May 30, 1912, the largest crowd yet assembled in Gilmer County

witnessed the unveiling of a huge stone carved in the shape of a tree

trunk with crossed axes at the top as symbols of the pioneer.

born in what is now Hardy County, WV about 1770.  He married Mary

Morrow.  It is believed that Leonard served in the War of 1812 with

the rank of Captain and died in 1826.  His mother's will names a

youngest daughter, but no other children's names are known.

    George Stump, a son of George and Elizabeth (Wilson) [Massey] Stump,

was born in Hardy County VA April 5, 1787 and died in Pulaski County IN

July 26, 1863. He married Catherine Neff in Hardy County in 1807.

Catherine, a daughter of Michael and Mary Neff, was born in Hardy County

in 1785 and died in Pulaski County June 24, 1846.

    George's second wife was Sophia Owens, a daughter of Jacob Owens.

Sophia died Sepember 28, 1868.

    "People of Pulaski County Indiana" Volume, 1, page 192 details

George's travels and life in Indiana:

    "In 1811, when George Stump II, Sr., was twenty-three years old, he

started to sell his land he inherited from his father. In 1815, he sold

the last of his land. In 1820, he left Hardy County and settled in Wood

County, VA, now WV. He was in Wood County in 1828. From there, he went

to Fairfield County, Ohio, thence to Tippecanoe County, IN (1831-1835).

The George Stump farm in Tippecanoe County was on Indian Creek, five

miles northwest of Lafayette. While there he enlisted in the Black Hawk

War. He arrived in Pulaski County, Indiana, in what was to be White Post

Township in March of 1835, the third family to settle there. The first

family was George S. Phillips and his wife, Mary Ann Stump, daughter of

George Stump., Sr., (October of 1834). The second family was Silas

Phillips Jr. and Charlotte Stump, also a daughter of George Stump, Sr.,

(February 1835). George Stump., Sr., settled on land one mile southwest

of what is now Medaryville, Indiana. He entered land in White Post

Township, Pulaski County, Indiana, in 1838 - the land on which he

settled. In 1838 he built what was known as the Stump Bridge."

     "He was a public spirited man and in 1836 went to Monticello,

Indiana, to vote in an election. From 1839 to 1843, he and his five sons

voted in elections at Winamac, Indiana. In 1843, the first election in

White Post Township was held at his home, as were elections several

years later. April of 1840, he was a petit juror in Pulaski County. The

second schoolhouse was built on his farm in 1847. (First was built on

Phillips land.) He was a blacksmith by trade. His wife,

Catherine, was the first white person to die in White Post Township .."

Hardy County VA and died March 25, 1883 in Calhoun County WV.

     He married Elizabeth Bush in Harrison County VA January 30, 1810.

Elizabeth, a daughter of Jacob and Margaret (Snar) Bush, was born

February 18, 1791 and died in Gilmer County VA (WV) May 2, 1860.

     Michael married Mary (Bush) Rice, September 27, 1867.  Mary, a

daughter of Henry and Ailsey (Simpson) Bush, was born in VA about

1805.
