1.JOHN STEPHENS

 

    John Stephens was born in 1740 in Freehold, Monmouth County, NJ, and

died January 02, 1787 in Upper Freehold, Monmouth County. He married

Lucretia Gaskill about 1760 in Burlington County NJ. Lucretia, a

daughter of Edward and Elizabeth (Lippincott) Gaskill, was born about

1743 in Springfield Township, Burlington County and died August 22, 1785

in Upper Freehold, Monmouth, County NJ.

    John married Franny Brock before January 02, 1787.  She was born

about 1770. John was a blacksmith, sawmill operator and large landowner

in Cross Creek, Monmouth County, NJ. His will was probated in Monmouth

County January 2, 1787.

Monmouth County.

    James "Shuck" Stephens, a son of John Stephens and Lucretia

(Gaskill) Stephens, was born September 06, 1773 or 1778 in Freehold,

Monmouth County, NJ and died July 08, 1861 in Monongalia County, VA. He

married Mary Ann "Anna Maria" Stull  May 15, 1798 in Whitely Township,

Green County, PA. Mary Ann, a daughter of Godfrey and Barbara (Carman)

Stull, was born November 29, 1781 in Middletown, Fredrick County MD,

and died May 10, 1857 in Monongalia County VA. She was baptized March

09, 1782, in the Lutheran Church of Zion, Middletown, MD

Jane Stephens, a daughter of James and Mary Ann (Stull) Stephens, was born March 10, 1803 in Greene County PA and died September 13, 1888 in Morris County KS. She married Lemuel Snodgrass July 10, 1823 in Monongalia County VA (WV). Lemuel, a son of Francis and Rachel (Smith) Snodgrass, was born August 14, 1800 in Monongalia County VA and died August 11, 1886 in Waubaunee County KS. He is buried Alta Vista Cemetery in Vaubaunee County.

      In 1848 the family moved to Washington County OH. In spring of 1870 moved to KS.

    Samuel Stephens, a son of James and Mary Ann (Stull) Stephens, was

born in 1807 in Green County PA and died January 16, 1873 in Taylor County WV. He married Margaret Tennant in 1826 in Greene County PA. Margaret, a daughter of Richard and Sarah (Dhew) Tennant, born in 1809 in Greene Countyand died October 22, 1884 in Taylor County, WV. They are buried in the Alf Smith cemetery, Middlebourne, Taylor County WV.

       Samuel purchased 130 acres on Paw Paw Creek in Monongalia County VA July 1, 1839. He is listed as head of Household in September 19, 1850 Census of the 37th District, Monongalia County VA.

      Thomas Jackson Stephens, a son of James and Mary Ann (Stull) Stephens, was born December 5, 1809 in Greene County PA and died February 26, 1895 in Marion County WV. He married Mahala Amos November 21, 1836 in Monongalia County VA. Mahala, a daughter of John and Mary (Miller) Amos, was born in 1816 in Monongalia County VA and died March 21, 1905 in Greene County PA.

   Thomas went with his father, James Stephens' to Shelby County IN, then back to Greene County PA and then to Monongalia County VA, where he married. The couple moved to North Fork Hughes River area of Ritchie County VA in 1840.

   Thomas is in 1870 Doddridge County WV census and the 1880 Marion County WV Census. He lived with his son Simeon near Metz, Marion County WV until his death. Mahala was living with grandson Simeon when she died and roads were so muddy they buried at East Finley, PA , rather than beside her husband.

Stacy Stephens, a son of James and Mary Ann (Stull) Stephens, was born September 4, 1811 in Greene County PA and died July 4, 1896 in Franklin County KS. He married Sarah Phares September 24, 1835 in Shellby County IN. Sarah, a  daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth (Brown) Phares, was born July 5, 1817 in Hamilton County OH and died November 26, 1906 in Franklin County KS.

      On October 10,1835, Stacy purchased 80 acre farm in Shelby County IN.

Stacy had power of attorney to sell his father's land in Shelby County IN.

He lived there until 1845, then returned to Monongalia County VA. Sold their farm on September 4,1848. In 1852,they moved to Washington County OH, where Stacy became a deacon in Brownsville Church. Lived there until March of 1869,then they moved to Franklin County KS. In 1880 Stacy was living in Williamsville, Franklin County KS.

Sarah, a daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Fox) Myers, was born January 26, 1809 in Greene County and died there February 15, 1882. He married Mariah ----- about 1882 in Greene County.

Apollo and Sarah are buried in Old Ironsides Cemetery in Kirby, PA.

      James Stephens, a son of Henry and Nancy (Campbell) Stephens, was born October 3, 1824 in Greene County PA and died February 27, 1903 in Union District, Wood County WV. He married Sarah Headlee April 6, 1848 in Greene County. Sarah, a daughter of Isaad and Elizabeth (Wiers) Headlee, was born May 2, 1828 in Greene County PA and died February 28, 1913 in Wood County WV.

      The family moved to Wood County in 1856. James served the Union in the Civil War in 15th W.Va. Volunteers Infantry 1862-1865.

      Sarah “Sally” Stephens, a daughter of Samuel and Margaret (Tennant) Stephens, was born in Greene County PA February 3, 1829. She married a widower, John Efaw in Greene County June 2, 1842. John, a son of David and Catherine (Climan) Efaw, was born January 12, 1896 in Hardy County VA and died October 31, 1878 in Marion County WV. He first married “Sally” -----.

      John’s will is dated April 19, 1870 and was recorded November 8, 1878 in Marion County WV Records, Will Book 2, p.192.

"Will of John Efaw, deceased.

 I, John Efaw of Mannington township Marion Co. WV being of sound mind and memory, in the name of Almighty God do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner and form as follows.

First I will and bequeath to my wife, Sally Efaw all my real and personal property as long as she remains my widow subject to the provisions herein after made.

Second, I will and bequeath that at the death or second marriage of my wife Sally Efaw that all my land or real estate be equally divided between my four boys, Jesse Efaw, ___ Efaw, Rob S. Efaw and Sam'l E. Efaw, and that they the said boys jointly then pay each of my six girls, Mary A. Henderson, Louisa Near, Margaret Efaw, Rosa S. Efaw, Nancy E. Efaw and Sary E. Efaw fifty-dollars ($50.) And that in lieu(n) of the (use) of my lands by my said  wife and four boys that they pay all my just debts and funeral expenses and all the taxes on the said lands. Also that they the said wife and boys in lieu of any personal property shall give my four unmarried girls when they shall marry or become of age each one ordinary milk cow in like manner as any two married girls have already. I also further request and bequeath that all my young and unmarried children shall remain on my lands as withy my said wife and for their services have their maintenance during their minority.

I further will that my son in law William Near give to my said wife and said boys possession of the house and property he now occupies whenever they shall so order.

I hereby appoint my wife, Sally Efaw sole executrix of this my last will and testament, and guardian of all my miner children, and hereby revoke all former wills by me made.

    John Francis Stephens, a son of Samuel and Margaret (Tennant)

Stephens, was born April 30, 1846 in Battlelle District, Monongalia

County VA and died November 08, 1936 in Wood County WV. He married Mary

Ellen Weekley October 08, 1868 in Tyler County WV. Mary, a daughter of

Otho and Mary (Kemp) Weekley, was born February 14, 1851 in Tyler County

and died February 09, 1927 in Wood County.

    The Stephens family moved from Tyler County WV to Wood County WV in

1895 to a farm on Lick Run, Walker, WV. All the Children were born in

Tyler County.

    John was served the Union in the Civil War in the 16th Militia (W)V.

Troop Home guard.
