Jonas Sams, a son of Jonathan Daniel and Mary "Polly" (Potts) Sams, was born in PA August 15, 1788 and died in Wood County VA (WV) before 1860.  He married Anna Potts.  Anna,  daughter of Jonas Potts Jr., was born in Pa about 1792.

At present, (Aug 1986) we have not determined which of Jonathan's sons is the sire of the Clay County, WV Sams clan. Considering the ages of Alfred Sams' older brother, and stories passed through the family, it was probably Jonas. According to LDS records, Jonas Sams was born in 1788 in Westmoreland County, PA.

Apparently, all the children of Jonas and Anna (Potts) Sams moved from Pennsylvania to Ringgold County, Iowa sometime after the Civil War, since obituary clippings speak of them as having lived in the latter area from around 1870.  There were statements about a faction of the family that were Southern sympathizers.  Alfred Merritt Sams repeated his grandmother's story of a cousin, who upon hearing of the beginning of the Civil War, immediately began molding rifle bullets  and vowing to "shoot anybody wearin' Yankee blue."  Such family splits were frequently carried on for years after the end of the Civil war and this may have been a factor in their decision to move.

23.ALFRED SAMS     5.JONAS SAMS     3.JONATHAN DANIEL SAMS    2.EDWARD

SAMS    1.GEORGE SAMS

Alfred Sams, a son of Jonas and Anna (Potts) Sams, was born in Cumberland Township, Greene County Pennsylvania, April 22, 1840.  He was married to Malisa Jane Edgel at Garard Fort, Green County, PA January 8, 1863 by Jeremiah Stewart. He died April 26, 1926, and is buried in the Sams Cemetery at Procious, WV.

According to War Department records, Alfred was five feet, six inches tall, with brown hair and blue eyes.  He drafted July 15, 1863. However, he did not report and was arrested January 11, 1864 and finally delivered to Company K, 74th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteers, at Washington D.C.

He deserted at Grafton WV November 23, 1864, was arrested December 31, 1864 and was imprisoned until February 28, 1865, when he was returned to his company.  He was mustered out with his company at Clarksburg, WV August 29, 1865. Alfred applied for an "Invalid Pension" March 13, 1896 and was carried on the

pension roll until his death.

It would seem that the Government did not get it's money's worth out of Alfred, however, four of his brothers died in the Civil War. After the Civil war, Alfred and Malisa lived in Pennsylvania until March 1868, when they moved to Ringgold County, Iowa.  They lived in Ringgold County until November 1882,

when they moved to Green County PA.  In 1885, they moved to WV, probably to Braxton County.

In 1887, "Alf" bought three hundred acres of land from Henry Waggy. William P. Paxton had borrowed three hundred dollars from William Waggy to hire a substitute so that Paxton would not have to go to the Army during the Civil War and secured the loan with a lien on his farm.  William Waggy died in 1884 and his son Henry inherited all his assets, including the lien on Paxton's farm.

On January 21, 1887, Henry Waggy received a deed to the Paxton farm and sold it to Alfred Sams on March 7, 1887. Later, "Alf" bought three other adjoining tracts of land that were sold for back taxes.

Deed books at the Clay County Courthouse record the disbursement of this land both before and after Alfred and Malisa's deaths. In Deed book number 19, page 38, there is a record of a March 4, 1911 transfer of 150 acres of land from

Alfred and Malisa Sams to Abraham G., Henry L., Sarah E. and Alfred Jr. (Alfred M.) Sams.

Alfred was in poor health at that time and this transfer of land was probably to assure his grand children of an inheritance apart from the general disbursement of his estate in the event that he should die.  In a letter to Edward Sams of Benton Station, Iowa, postmarked at Procious, West Virginia, January 26, 1912, Malissa states, "Alf has got lots better, looks well, sleeps good, eats hearty, but he don't work any at all only put wood on the fire.  He has not done any work for 2 years."

On November 9, 1933, several transactions were recorded in Deed book number 39.  This was probably the final settlement of Malisa's estate following her death on December 2, 1930. Deed book 39, page 2, transfer of two tracts of land totaling 561/2 acres to Mary (Sams) Flowers by N.E. Dusenberry et al.  N.E.

Dusenberry was Nancy Ella (Sams) Dusenberry, and the "et al" is legal jargon for "and others".

The "et al" are named as A.G. and Oma Sams, Henry L. and Eliza Sams, Alfred M. and Frona Sams, A.E. and Edith (Sams) Hill and A.A. Flowers acting for himself and as Attorney in fact for his wife and children. Deed book 39, page 4, records a transfer of two tracts of land totaling 56 1/2 acres to Gay Bailes from N.E. Dusenberry et al. and Book 39, page 6 records a transfer of

this same 56 1/2 acres from Gay Bailes to A.A. Flowers.

This was apparently a legal maneuver of some sort, since Gay Bailes, whoever he or she may have been, did not benefit from the exchange. Deed book 39, page 7, records the transfer of a 49 acre tract of land to A.G. Sams from N.E. Dusenberry et al.. Deed book 39, page 8, records the transfer of a tract of 52 acres of land from the N.E. Dusenberry et al. to Malisa Dusenberry.

In summation, the records of Deed book 39 record the transfer of a total of 213 acres of land to various individual Sams heirs on November 9, 1933.

Deed book 38, page 488, records a June 30, 1933 transfer of 34 acres of land from A.G. Sams to Alfred M and Frona Sams.  This was a portion of the 150 acres transferred to A.G. Sams in 1911. Deed book 40, page 254, records a May 2, 1936 division of the 49 acres transferred to A.G. Sams on November 9, 1933 and recorded in Deed book 39, page 7.  Twelve acres were transferred to Sarah

E. Hill, 2 acres to Marshall Sams, and the remaining 34 acres to be held undivided by A.G. and Alfred M. Sams. Deed book 45, page 197 records a July 16, 1937 transfer of 47+ acres from A.G. Sams to Henry L. Sams.  This was also a part of the 1911 transfer.

Although the writer has no supporting documents, he has good reason to believe that A.G. Sams also transferred 34 acres of the 150 acres transferred to him in 1911 to Sarah E. Hill and retained 34 acres for himself.

The final distribution of the lands of Alfred and Malisa Sams were as follows:

     A.A. Flowers           56 1/2 acres

Mary (Sams) Flowers    56 1/2 acres

     Nancy Dusenberry       52     acres

     Sarah E. Hill          46     acres

     Henry L. Sams          47+    acres

     Marshall Sams           2     acres

     A.G. Sams              34 acres  plus 1/2 of 34 acres.

Alfred M. Sams         34 acres  plus 1/2 of 34 acres.
