1.WILHELM RITTENHOUSE

 

    Wilhelm Rittenhouse was born Wilhelm Rittinghausen in 1644 in the

German village of Broich, near Holland, and died in Philadelphia County

PA in 1708. As a young man, he moved to Holland to live with an uncle

and learn the paper making trade. He married and began his family in

Holland. He joined the Mennonite faith and came to America about 1687.

    Claus Rittenhouse, a son of Wilhelm Rittenhouse, was born Holand in

1666 and died in PA in 1734. His spouse is unknown.

    Claus continued in the paper making business established by his

father.

    Henry Rittenhouse, a son of of Nicholas Rittenhouse, died in Louisa

County, VA in 1796. His spouse in Unknown.

       Isaac Rittenhouse, a son of Henry Rittenhouse, married Elizabeth

Kauffman in Augusta County VA. In January of 1829, Isaac purchased two

hundred acres of land in Nelson County, Virginia, and moved his family

there. Ten months later, he was dead and the younger children, including

Henry, were placed under the guardianship of relatives.

    Henry Rittenhouse, a son of Isaac and Elizabeth (Kauffman)

Rittenhouse, was born in Augusta County VA in 1821 and died in Lewis

County WV in 1908. He married Hannah Roberts in Nelson County VA in

1845. Hannah, a daughter of James and Mary "Polly" Bridgewater, was born

about 1822 in VA and died in Lewis County VA in 1860.

    Henry and Hannah began their family in Albemarle County VA. Three of

Henry's sisters had relocated to Lewis County VA. Henry and family came

to Lewis County in 1856, settling on Abram's Run near Walkersville.

    Henry married Matilda Meeks about 1861. She was born in VA about

1823 and died in 1898. Henry married for a third time to Sarah Alice

Wilfong about 1900. Sarah was born about 1867.
