Samuel Ravenscroft, a son of John M. and Elizabeth Ravenscroft,, was born about 1751 in Hampshire County VA (WV), and died 1807 in Hampshire County VA (WV).  He married Priscilla Seavers in 1772 in Hampshire County VA. Priscilla, a  daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Hamilton) Seavers, was born about 1751 in Hampshire County VA (WV), and died between 1793 and 1807 in Hampshire County.

3.JOHN M. RAVENSCROFT JR.   1.JOHN M. RAVENSCROFT

 

John M. Ravenscroft Jr., a son of John M. and Elizabeth Ravenscroft, was born February 15, 1753 in Hampshire County VA and died there February 2, 1828.  He married Nancy Seavers in Hampshire County. Nancy, a daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Hamlin) Seavers, was born January 8, 1753 in Hampshire County VA and died there September 20, 1841.

      John Ravenscroft had a land grant in the Northern neck of Virginia (now WV) in 1789 from Governor Beverly Randolph of 195 acres in Hampshire County, on the south side of Knobby Mountain on waters of Cabin Run for which he paid One Pound Sterling into the Treasury of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

In 1780 he bought land from his father-in-law Nicholas Seavers. Other land grants recorded were for 25 acres in Hampshire County on North Branch of Potomac: (Grant Book V, page 418, 3/1/1792)

41 acres on North branch of Potomack, Hampshire County on Alleghany Mountain, 9/7/1782.

Grant dated 12/12/1795(Grant Book V, page 639,400 acres Hampshire County, on the drains of Patterson’s Creek, Grant dated Oct 29, 1800) (Grant Book Y page 498) 

There was a long dispute over the property as attested by the fact that the final settlement was  not made until after 1830. An indenture dated August 3, 1830 between John and his wife, Elizabeth Ravenscroft and Abner Ravenscroft indicates that no division of the land personal estate of John Ravenscroft had been made at that time.  It states that Abner and Nicholas, his brother had instituted a suit  "set up and establish a supposed will made by his said father by which will the said Abner and Nicholas claim the greater part of the whole estate both real and personal."

This suit was still pending and the above parties wished to come to a compromise.  For One hundred fifty dollars John and Elizabeth Ravenscroft assign their rights to their share (one seventh of the whole estate both real and personal) to Abner and his heirs.  This document can be found in Hampshire County Deed Book 25,page 458.  Other data can be found in Will Book 9,page 139,

and 208.

William Ravenscroft, a son of John M. and Elizabeth Ravenscroft, was born in 1760 in Hampshire County VA.  He married ---- Ramsey in 1784.

William appears in 1784 tax list for Hampshire VA. All his children are mentioned in the Book "Records of Hampshire County" by Laira Sage Jones.

Sarah Ellen Ravenscroft, a daughter of Samuel and Priscilla (Seavers) Ravenscroft, was born March 18, 1776 in Hampshire County VA and died May 1860 in Ritchie County WV.  She married James Bentley Jones May 18, 1791 in Allegany County, MD. James, a son of Samuel and Esther Jones, was born 1762 in Charles County MD and died November 10, 1850 in Ritchie County WV.

      James served in Captain West’s Company of Fairfax County VA Militia during the American Revolution. James served through several tours for 28 months total, and was honorably discharged in 1783. Sarah was granted a widow’s pension in 1854. James is buried in the old Richards Cemetery on Bunnell's Run near Pennsboro, Ritchie County WV.

      James Jones and family are listed on the 1810 and 1820 Monongalia County Censuses and on the 1830 Tyler County, (W)VA census. About 1838, James and Sarah moved to Wood County, VA, to a 150 acre land grant that James had probably received in part payment for his Revolutionary War service.

James and Sarah are listed on the 1840 Wood County VA. They were probably living in the part of Wood County that became Ritchie County VA.

Samuel Ravenscroft Jr., a son of Samuel and Priscilla (Seavers) Ravenscroft, was born about 1785 in Hampshire County VA and died after 1837 in MO. He married Catherine Funk. She was born about 1795 in Hampshire County.

      Samuel Ravenscroft Jr. had a land grant for "30 acres of  Hampshire County, VA on the North Branch of Potomack, adjoining lands of Edward McCarty, formerly Thomas Ravenscroft and Nicholas Seavers."  Consideration:  Exchange Treasury Warrant  #1207,issued 5-Jan.,1802 Grant Book 2,page 253.

      He is not of the heirs to the estate listed on the settlement, which indicate that his share was paid to William Armstrong.
