"Samuel" to Philadephia, PA on August 17, 1733 with his parents and

sisters. He married Barbara Probst in Germany. She was born in 1681 in

Germany and died in Pendleton County, VA.

Johann Michael Probst, a son of Hans Michael and Barbara Propst, was

born about 1712 in Bonnigheim, Wurttemberg, Germany and died in July

1789 in Proptsburg, Pendleton County VA. He settled in Pennsylvania in

the early 1700's. He married Anna Maria Keller December 25, 1733 in

Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, Lancaster County PA. A widow, she was born

between 1705 and 1715 in Germany or PA and died before 1739 in Lancaster

County. He married Maria Margaretha Corell December 3, 1738 in Muddy

Creek Lutheran Church, Lancaster County PA. She was born about 1718.

Johann married Catherine Elizabeth Propst. She was born about 1716.

Anna Barbara Probst, a daughter of Hans Michael and Barbara Propst,

was born about 1725 in Bonnigheim, Wurttemberg, Germany. She came to

Phildelphia with her parents in 1733. She married John Conrad

Cowger/Gauger March 9, 1741/42 in Salem County, NJ. He was born November

26, 1708 in Wurttemburg, Germany.

George Frederick Probst aka Probo, a son of Johann Micahel and Maria

Margareta (Correll) Propst, was born about 1740 in Rockingham County VA

and died in 1801 in Pendleton County VA in Winfield Propst's house. He

married Barbara Pence. Barbara, a daughter of Valentine and Anna Maria Catherine (Oberlin) Pence, was born in 1748 and died in November 1829 in Pendleton County VA.

Catrherine Elizabeth Propst, a daughter of George Frederick and

Barbara (Swadley/Pence) Propst, was born March 15, 1772 and died August

4, 1849 in Calhoun County, VA (WV). She reportedly married James

McQuain. She married Tunis Anthony McElwain in Pendleton County VA in

1791. Tunis was a son of George and Nancy (Rector) McElwain. His

monument in the Ball-Winter cemetery in Calhoun County WV gives a birth

date of August 19, 1773 and death date of November 4, 1851. However, his

American Revolution Veteran's pension file contains a December 10, 1833

deposition stating that he was 74 years on the date of the deposition. A

Virginia Militia record states that he was 75 years old March 4, 1831.

Since his claim for a Revolutionary War service pension was validated,

he was probably born about 1760.

In 1797, the family moved from Pendleton County to Franklin

County, VA and lived there until 1802, when they returned to Pendleton

County, where they remained until 1812. In 1812 they moved to the

banks of the Elk River and settled at the mouth of the Holly River.

Tunis had 54 acres surveyed October 18, 1815 and received a land grant

from the Commonwealth of Virginia December 30, 1816. In 1830, the

family moved to the West Fork of the Little Kanawha River in Kanawha

County, VA near the present site of Arnoldsburg, Calhoun County, WV.

The 1850 Gilmer County census lists Tunis in the household of his son

in law, Soloman Nicholas.

Tunis Anthony and Catherine (Propst) McElwain are buried in the

Ball-Winter Cemetary, near Arnoldsburg, Calhoun County, WV.
