According to the traditional biography of the Pierson families, two brothers, Jonathan and John Pierson migrated from England and settled in Philadelphia. A great plague visited the city (probably the yellow fever epidemic of 1754) and John and his wife died, leaving two small sons, John and Joseph. Taking his two nephews, Jonathan Pierson went to New York State, where they lived for some year. John and Joseph grew to manhood and wanted to leave New York. John went to Maryland and Joseph to the western part of Virginia.

1.JOSEPH PIERSON

Joseph Pierson was born in Philadelphia, PA, September 20, 1746. He was reared in New York State by his uncle Jonathan Pierson and after he grew to manhood, moved to Monroe County, Virginia. About 1809, he moved to White Water, Nicholas County, Virginia.

Joseph was first married in Monroe County VA and had one son. His first wife died and he then married Charlotte McKee. Joseph died in 1827 and Charlotte about 1858.

Agnes Nancy Pierson, a daughter of Joseph and Charlotte (McKee)

Pierson, was born August 28, 1791. She married Solomon Bail. She

married Basil Young in Kanawha County VA (WV) April 16, 1817. Basil

was born in England in 1797 and died in Wirt County WV about 1884.

Jonathan Pierson, a son of Joseph and Charlotte (McKee) Pierson,

was born in Monroe County VA March 23, 1795 and died in Braxton County

VA (WV) October 10, 1855. He settled in Braxton County VA (WV) in 1826.

He married Elizabeth Given in Kanawha County VA (WV) November 13, 1816.

Elizabeth, a daughter of William and Virginia Jane (Frame) Given, was

born in Bath County VA December 30, 1796 and died in Braxton County

September 7, 1873.

Margaret Pierson, a daughter of Joseph and Charlotte (McKee)

Pierson, was probably born October 27, 1799.. There is no information

as to her place of birth, however her brother Joseph L. is said to

have come to what is now Clay County, WV about 1841. Margaret was

apparently not married according to Volume III, Book 5 of Hickory and

Ladyslippers, but did have four children.

Sarah Pierson, a daughter of Joseph and Charlotte (McKee) Pierson,

was born in what is now Nicholas County, WV in 1803 and died in Clay

County VA (WV) January 6, 1860. She married William Howes King in

Nicholas County VA (WV) March 12, 1823. William, a son of Charles

Woodley and Rebecca (Bess) King, was born in Giles County Va in

1793 and died February 8, 1881 in Clay County VA (WV).

was born January 6, 1812 and died in Clay County WV October 15, 1868.

On December 22, 1831, he married Elizabeth Hull Summers in Nicholas

County VA (WV). Elizabeth, a daughter of Jacob Jehu and Johanna

(Davis) Summers, was born January 6, 1805 and died in Clay County WV

March 14, 1876. The family moved to what is now Clay County, WV in

1841 or 1842.

George served the Confederacy in the Civil War in Co I 17th VA

Cavalry. He enlisted October 4, 1862, was captured in Braxton County

VADecember 2, 1864 and was released from Camp Chase in OH June 12, 1865.

Harrison Henry Pierson, a son of Joseph L. and Elizabeth Hull

(Summers) Pierson, was born in Nicholas County VA (WV), September 12,

1837 and died in Clay County WV May 13, 1919. He is said to have

served with the Confederacy during the Civil War, but no details are

available. Harrison married Mary E. Schoonover August 24 1868 in Clay

County, WV. Mary was born in Nicholas County April 4, 1844 and died

in Clay County, WV, October 20, 1898.
