2.JONATHAN OGDEN    1.WILLIAM OGDEN

 

    Jonathan Ogden, a son of William and Ann Ogden,  was born in Charles

County MD August 26, 1736 and died in Harrison County VA August 13,

1807. He married Nancy Ann Howell about 1766 in Charles County. Nancy

Ann, a daughter of Paul and Mary (Moreland) Howell, was born in Charles

County November 18, 1747 and died in Harrison County WV before August

1825.

   Thomas Ogden was the administrator of the estate of Ann Ogden, his

mother. She died intestate and Joseph Campbell, Fielding Boggess,

Charles McIntire and Benjamin Reeder were assigned by the court to

inventory her estate. Joseph Campbell, Fielding Boggess and Charles

McIntire prepared the inventory and submitted it to the Court on August

10, 1825. The inventory was recorded in the November 1825 Court minutes.

A part of the estate were notes held on John Richardson, Sarah Martin

and William R. Ogden.

    Jonathan took an oath of allegiance March 1778 in Charles County,

MD.  He made a will August 13, 1807 in Harrison County, VA. His will is

recorded in Harrison County VA (WV) Will Book 1, p.373-4, April 1808.

   Jonathan served the Colonies in the American Revolution as a private

in the MD Militia of the Continental Army, 1777, Capt. Benj. Cawood

Company, Charles County, 26th Battalion.

    Jonathan leased land from James Middleton in Charles County for a

period of at least from 1787 to 1793 as noted in the Middleton estate

inventory. The inventory was recorded in the February 1795 Charles

County Court. The rent was paid in part by currency and in part by

tobacco. The rent for the year 1793 was 1400 pounds of neat tobacco.

   Jonathan is shown with a family of 5 males and 6 females in the 1790

MD US Census. Jonathan, his son Thomas and son-in-law Jeremiah Robey,

are listed in the 1800 MD Census, Charles County and his son Rode is

shown in Prince George's County Census.

    Jonathan and his son, Thomas, purchased a tract of land of 100 acres

in Harrison County, Virginia in February 1804 from Andrew and Lydia

Snyder for 100 dollars. The land was on the east side of the West Fork

River above the mouth of Snyder's run.

3.TABITHA OGDEN    2.JONATHAN OGDEN    1.WILLIAM OGDEN

 

    Tabitha Ogden, a daughter of Jonathan and Ann (Howell) Ogden, was

born in Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD September 17, 1767 and died

January 24, 1833. She married a widower, Uzza Barnes, April 15, 1809 in

Harrison County, VA. Joshua Hickman performed the marriage ceremony.

Uzza, a son of William Barnes and Catherine, was born September 24, 1752

and died April 29, 1833 in VA. Uzza married Lydia Reeves January 30,

1795 in Monongalia County, VA.

    Uz served in the Revolutionary War with the Cumberland Militia of

PA.

   Uzza and his wife Tabitha sold land of 500 acres on Buffalo Creek to

James Jefferies in June 1814 in Monongalia County. On August 1823 he

sold another tract of land of 426 acres on Buffalo Creek to Boaz

Fleming. In June of 1839 0.5 acres of land was granted to the Methodist

Protestant Church by Uz Barnes, most probably his son.

    In December 1822, Tabitha and her husband Uzza Barnes and her

siblings signed a conveyance of two lots to Catherine Ogden, relict of

her brother Samuel.

    William Rhody Ogden, a son of Jonathan and Ann (Howell) Ogden, was

born in Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD October 16, 1769 and died

October 1, 1851 in Harrison County, VA. Another source states he died

October 16, 1851 in Harrison County.

    William married Phoebe Hall November 27, 1806 in Harrison County,

VA. Phoebe, daughter of John Sr. and Phoebe (Ogden) [Nixon] Hall, was

born November 19, 1779 or November 22, 1779 and died April 11, 1850 or

May 1, 1850 Harrison County.

    William and Phoebe are buried in IOOF Cemetery in Shinnston, WV.

    Mary Ruth "Polly" Ogden, a daughter of Jonathan and Ann (Howell)

Ogden, was born in Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD January 15, 1772 and

died January 3, 1849 in Harrison County VA. She married Jeremiah Robey

in 1790. Jeremiah was born in Port Tobacco, MD April 16, 1776 and died

in Harrison County VA January 14, 1835.

    The couple bought property in Harrison County VA in 1803 and moved

there from Charles County MD.

6.THOMAS OGDEN   2.JONATHAN OGDEN    1.WILLIAM OGDEN

 

    Thomas Ogden, a son of Jonathan and Ann (Howell) Ogden, was born in

Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD September 30, 1775 and died April

12, 1830 in Harrison County, VA. The grave stone is marked 4-7-1830,

suggesting that Thomas may have died on the date he wrote his will.

He married Phebe Elizabeth Moore August 8, 1793 in MD. Elizabeth was

born August 5, 1775.

    On April 1, 1820, Thomas Ogden purchased land sold by Charles A.

Swearingin, Marshal of the Superior Court at Clarksburg, VA for

the sum of $1,380 originally belonging to Enoch James and sold to John

and George DeVilbiss. The land was located on the West Fork River, 14

miles below Clarksburg and was patented to Enoch James May 7, 1784,

containing 400 acres. On May 22, 1829 the sale was confirmed.

       On April 7, 1830, Thomas Ogden and Elizabeth, his wife, made a

deed to William Ogden for 173 acres for $400. The same day he wrote his

will. Thomas is reported to have died 12 April 1830, five days after

writing his will.

    Sarah Ogden, a daughter of Jonathan and Ann (Howell) Ogden, was born

in Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD May 5, 1778 and died February 12,

1854. She married Michael Miles Martin about 1805 in MD. Michael was the

son of Henry Martin. Michael died before December 1822. In the

conveyance of a deed to Catherine Ogden, relict of Samuel, all of

Samuel's brothers and sisters including their husbands signed the

conveyance. Michael M Martin did not sign; however his wife Sarah did.

Sarah lived on Mudlick Run in Harrison County, VA. She is buried in

Mudlick Cemetery.

 

8.SAMUEL OGDEN    2.JONATHAN OGDEN    1.WILLIAM OGDEN

 

    Samuel Ogden, a son of Jonathan and Ann (Howell) Ogden, was born in

Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD in February 1781. Samuel died before

August 1817 in MD.

    Samuel married Catherine Matthews before 1810. Upon Samuel's death,

Catherine Matthews, his widow, and her brother petitioned for letters of

Administration for Samuel's estate from August Term 1817 of Orphans

Court in Charles County, MD. On September 20th of 1817 Catherine

relinquished her rights to Administration of her husband, Samuel

Ogden's, estate to her brother Alexander Matthews. This

action was recorded in the October Term 1817 Orphans Court.

    In the 1810 US Census of Charles County. MD, Samuel Ogden is

listed as head of household with 2 males (age 26-45 years) and one

female (age 26-45 years). At this time Samuel would have been about 29

years old. The female in the household is probably Catherine Ogden,

Samuel's wife. Neither Samuel nor Catherine are noted in the Charles

County 1820 US Census.

    Catherine Ogden, relict of Samuel, requested a deed for two lots in

Port Tobacco that either was owned by Samuel or his father, Jonathan.

The conveyance that transferred the land to Catherine in fee simple and

for consideration of 400 dollars was signed by all of Jonathan's

children and their spouses that were living at the time. The conveyance

was started in December 1822 and completed in April 1823.

 

9.NATHAN OGDEN    2.JONATHAN OGDEN    1.WILLIAM OGDEN

 

    Nathan Ogden, a son of Jonathan and Ann (Howell) Ogden, was born in

Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD April 15, 1783 and died January 12,

1865 in Harrison County, WV or died December 28, 1867. He married

Eleanor Kidwell in 1803. Eleanor was born in June 1782 and died October

20, 1832. He married Elizabeth Cole November 2, 1836.

 

Known child of Nathan and Eleanor (Kidwell) Ogden.

    Susanna Ogden, a daughter of Jonathan and Ann (Howell) Ogden, was

born in Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD October 11, 1785 and died March

11, 1847 in Winter Quarters, Nebraska Territory. She married Mark Bigler

November 7, 1805 in Harrison County, VA. John Denham performed the

marriage ceremony. Mark, a son of Jacob and Hannah (Booher) Bigler, was

born May 19, 1785 in Harrison County and died September 23, 1839 in

Quincy, IL.

   Mark was baptized into the Mormon Church in Harrison County,

VA September 23, 1834. He was to first Bigler to join the faith.

 

11.NANCY ANN OGDEN    2.JONATHAN OGDEN    1.WILLIAM OGDEN

 

    Nancy Ann Ogden, a daughter of Jonathan and Ann (Howell) Ogden, was

born in Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD April 25, 1788 and died

February 10, 1858 in Harrison County, VA.43 She married John Richardson

about 1802 in MD. John, a son of Mark and Mary (Hughes) Richardson, was

born November 26, 1782 in Port Tobacco, Charles County, MD and died

February 18, 1825 or February 25, 1825 in Harrison County VA.

    Nancy and John are buried in the IOOF Cemetery in Shinnston, WV.

    The family came across the Allegheny mountains from MD on horseback

with their children and settled on 300 acres on Big Indian run and

Bingamon creek in Eagle district of Harrison County about 1810. John

Richardson made annual trips to Winchester, VA for salt. He also drove

his cattle across the mountains to Washington and Baltimore by way of

the North branch of the Potomac river. He served as a Captain in the War

of 1812.

    Nancy married Jacob Swiger September 11, 1833 in Harrison County,

VA.

    Anna Ogden, a daughter of Thomas and Phoebe Elizabeth (Moore) Ogden,

was born December 26, 1799 and died April 18, 1838 in Muskingum County

OH. She married Nathaniel Barnes October 13, 1824 in Harrison County,

VA. Nathaniel, a son of Uzza and Lydia (Reeves) Barnes, was born

February 11, 1796 and died June 23, 1863 at in Federal Prison Camp Chase

in Columbus, OH. He married Mary Coon November 4, 1845.

    Anna is buried in Mudlick Cemetery in Harrison County. Nathaniel

was buried in Confederate Cemetery in Camp Chase, Franklin County, OH.

    William B. Ogden, a son of Thomas and Phoebe Elizabeth (Moore)

Ogden, was born September 24, 1802 and died April 13, 1884 in

Marion County, WV. He married Sarah Ann Elizabeth McIntire January 29,

1824 in Harrison County, VA. Sarah, a daughter of James and Rebecca

(James) McIntire, was born November 12, 1800 and died March 12, 1874 in

Marion County. William and Sarah are buried in Ogden Cemetery near

Hutchinson, Harrison County, WV.

   William deeded the 173 acres of land he had acquired from his father,

Thomas, to Presley and Jasper with provision that he and Sarah lived in

their home on 15 acres for the remainder of their natural life.

Additionally, Presley and Jasper were to pay their father one hundred

dollars per year until his or Sarah's death, whomever lived the

longest.

    Samuel Ogden, a son of Thomas and Phoebe Elizabeth (Moore) Ogden,

was born in Harrison County, VA August 4, 1809 and died October 25,

1889. He married Julia Ann Duncan May 23, 1833 in Harrison County.

Julia, a daughter of John Wesley and Phoebe (Piggott) Duncan, was born

February 18, 1814 and died March 3, 1895.

    Nathan Ogden, a son of Thomas and Phoebe Elizabeth (Moore) Ogden,

was born in Harrison County, Virginia June 14, 1811 and died March 8,

1871. He married Phoebe Jane Duncan April 14, 1831 in Harrison County,

VA. Phoebe, a daughter of John Wesley and Phoebe (Piggott) Duncan, was

born in 1809 in Harrison County and died there June 16, 1867

    Nathan He married Lousia J. Moore April 28, 1870 in Marion County,

WV. Lousia, a daughter of John and Jane Moore, was born about 1827.

    Jonathan Ogden, a son of Thomas and Phoebe Elizabeth (Moore) Ogden,

was born in Harrison County, VA October 10, 1814 and died there March

13, 1894. He married Emily Duncan September 6, 1838 in Harrison

County. Emily, a daughter of John Wesley and Phoebe (Piggott) Duncan,

died April 1, 1859 in Harrison County.

    Jonathan married Rachel Nay August 23, 1863. Rachel, a daughter

of John (James) Henson and Abigail (Ashcraft) Nay, was born in 1843 in

Marion County, VA.

    Conflicting evidence states that He died 1878. Built a grist mill

and sawmill on Robinson Run Prospect Valley almost opposite the old fort

built above the mouth of Pigott's Run.

      William Rhodem Ogden, a son of Nathan and Eleanor (Kidwell) Ogden, was born June 12, 1804 in Port Tobacco, MD and died January 12, 1885 in Harrison County WV. He married Elizabeth Shinn January 25, 1829. Elizabeth, a daughter of Samuel and Sarah (Davisson) Shinn, was born September 29, 1804 in Harrison County VA and died there May 31, 1871. 

William is listed as a physician in the 1860 and 1860 Harrison County VA (WV) census.

Morgan, a son of Ebenezer Blackshire, was born about 1817 in VA.

    Morgan married Rosetta Sandy in July 6, 1862.

    Julia Ann Ogden, a daughter of William B. and Sarah Ann Elizabeth

(McIntire) Ogden, was born November 17, 1826. She married Samuel H.

Coon, about 1846. Samuel, a son of Jacob E. and Sarah Jane (Crouch)

Coon, was born in 1815 in Harrison County, VA.

    Mary Ellen Ogden, a daughter of William B. and Sarah Ann Elizabeth

She married William Perry Fortney about 1850. William, a the son of

Jacob H. and Amy (Shinn) Fortney, was born March 28, 1827 in Shinnston,

VA.

    Mary died after the birth of her daughter Rocina.

    Robert F. Ogden, a son of William B. and Sarah Ann Elizabeth

(McIntire) Ogden, was born November 22, 1833 and died in 1863 in the

Civil War. He married Mariah Delilah Smith March 3, 1857 in Marion

County, VA. Mariah, a daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth Smith, was born

September 6, 1836 in Greene County, PA and died October 22, 1922 in

Roane County WV.

    Robert enlisted in Co E 14 VA Cavalry in Calhoun County VA September

26, 1862. He was last mustered with his company April 30, 1863 and died

at Winchester that year.

    Mariah married Jesse Isaac Harold December 23, 1866 in

Roane County WV. Jesse, a son of Elias and Barbara America (Simmons)

Harold, was born in Pendleton County Va (WV) June 17, 1840 and died in

Roane County WV February 24, 1930.  Jesse served in the Civil War.

    Mariah and Jesse are buried in Ogden Cemetery in Uler, WV.

    Osborn M. Ogden, a son of William B. and Sarah Ann Elizabeth

(McIntire) Ogden, was born in Harrison County, VA November 10, 1835 and

died July 14, 1917 in Uler, Roane County, WV. Family records indicate

that the death was in 1914 and the grave stone in Ogden Cemetery in

Uler, WV is marked 1914. He married Sarah L. Pettit September 8, 1858 in

Marion County, VA. Sarah, a daughter of James and Elizabeth (DeLaney)

Pettit, was born in 1838 in PA and died December 2, 1884 in Roane

County. She is Ogden Cemetery in Uler, WV. Sarah's brother George W.

Pettit also settled in Roane County.

    Osborn Ogden and his brother Robert, purchased 696 acres of land

along the middle fork of Big Sandy creek, a branch of the Elk River in

Roane County from Sam and Joseph Wright. They paid $1200 for the land

with an initial payment of $200 made on April 10, 1856 and final payment

made April 1, 1858. This land purchase recorded April 9, 1856 is the

first land deed recorded in the newly formed county of Roane and

new county seat Spencer. Osborne Ogden got 390 acres of the land which

he farmed. The farm was located above the village of Newton, earlier

known as the village of Three Forks.

    Osborn Ogden enlisted in the 14th Virginia Cavalry, Company E in the

Civil War as did his brother Robert. Both enlisted in Calhoun County on

September 26, 1862 for a period of three years or the war. Osborn was

made a private and assigned to taking care of the horses. He was

captured at Berryville, WV on September 9, 1864 and taken as a prisoner

of war to Camp Chase, OH until his release April 11, 1865.

    Presley Benjamin Ogden, a son of William B. and Sarah Ann Elizabeth

(McIntire) Ogden, was born in Marion County, VA April 29, 1837 and died

November 17, 1912. He married Mary Ellen Coombs August 26, 1862 in

Monongalia County, WV. Mary, a daughter of Philip and Elizabeth

(Pindle) Coombs, was born December 4, 1837 in Monongalia County and died

April 24, 1908.

    Presley married Alice E. Sapp 1908. Alice, a daughter of Allison

Sapp, was born 1879.

    Presley was a prominent Doctor of Fairmont, Marion County, WV.

    William Wesley Ogden, a son of Robert F. and Mariah Delilah (Smith)

Ogden, was born in 1857 and William died in 1930. He married Margaret T.

"Maggie" Chewning August 6, 1885. Maggie, a the daughter of Kelles and

Minerva S. (Preston) Chewning, was born May 11, 1863 and died in 1936.

    About 1893, William Ogden purchased from B. M. Rogers a parcel of

land at the mouth of Hollywood in Newton and erected a building of

suitable size for a flour mill to serve the county's need. He

installed in the building a recently invented machinery for making wheat

flour called the "new Roller Process". He obtained the services of an

experienced miller, David P. Switzer, who left the Spencer Roller Mills

and took up residence at Newton. After a year, William Ogden sold out to

Mr. Switzer, who ran the mill for many years. He later sold the mill to

M.F. Ogden. William Wesley Ogden had many business ventures. He was

first a school teacher, then a surveyor of lands and for some years one

of the lumber dealers.

    Mr. Ogden also served Roane County as deputy sheriff under

Sheriff P.A. Tallman and served one term in the State Legislature in

1910. He subsequently moved to Charleston, WV.

    Mary Angeline Ogden, a daughter of Robert F. and Mariah (Smith)

Ogden, was born in Roane County May 3, 1856 and died there February 21,

1891. She married Millard Fillmore Ross in Roane County WV January 1,

1880. Millard, a son of Davidson W. and Nancy (Drake) Ross, was born in

Roane County VA (WV) June 11, 1859 and died in Clay County WV February

12, 1943.

    Millard married Mary E. White in Roane County WV October 24, 1891.

Mary was born in Calhoun County WV in 1872.

Ogden, was born in Roane County VA July 25 1859 and died there

March 23, 1902. She married Michael Harold February 18 1875 in Marion

County, WV. Michael, a son of Elias and Barbara America (Simmons)

Harold, was born in Randolph County Va (WV) March 13, 1848 and died in

Roane County WV January 14, 1932. His second wife was Sarah Elizabeth

Rogers and his third Lucy A. Smith.

    Rocina E. Ogden, a daughter of Osborn M. and Sarah L. (Pettit)

Ogden, was born in Roane County, VA November 17, 1861 and died there     

October 21, 1940. She married John P. "Jack" Rogers April 5, 1879 in

Roane County. John, a son of Seth and Mary (Drake) Rogers, was born June

7, 1850 in  Gilmer County VA and died before 1900.

    John combined a tanning business in the Village of Newton with his

farming in Geary district. Jack Rogers was deputy sheriff of Roane

County for several terms under Andrew Vandal.

    Mary Loutesha Ogden, a daughter of Osborn M. and Sarah L. (Pettit)

Ogden, was born in Roane County WV January 15, 1871 and died there July

14, 1934. She married Oscar Sherman Taylor July 2, 1887 in Roane County.

Oscar, a son of Virginia Barbara Martin, was born in Roane County March

11, 1865 and died there July 4, 1946.

March 23, 1908. She married Amos Hiram Laughlin in Roane County March

26, 1893. Amos, a son of Hiram and Luemma (Bailey) Laughlin,

was born in Calhoun County WV in September 1870.

    Amos moved to Akron, OH after Sarah died.
