2.RICHARD MAGGESEN MAXSON 1.JOHN MAXSON

Richard Maxson, a son of John Maxson, was born in 1601 in England

and died in 1643 in Throgg's Neck NY or RI. He sailed from England on

the "Griffin" in 1634 to Boston MA. He married Rebecca ----- about 1627

in England. It is believed that Richard and his wife, Rebecca, came to

America in 1634 on the ship "Griffin", which brought Anne Hutchinson and

her family. There is speculation that the two families were related, but

I believe that Richard was probably an advocate of Anne's beliefs.

Anne's husband was a wealthy merchant and Richard was a blacksmith,

which would put them on different social strata. It is certain that

there was a closeness between Richard and Anne. When she was 'banned in

Boston', he joined the group which went with her to Rhode Island, but

didn't wait to get paid for it, so it would seem that it was important

to him to go with Anne.

Richard was admitted to the Church in Boston on August 2, 1634. As

stated, he went to Rhode Island with the Hutchinson group and as a

blacksmith was a valued member of the community. He was granted land by

the group in both Newport (36 acres) and Portsmouth. (The Newport land

is now a public park). In 1638 he was chastised for profiteering and

promised amendment and satisfaction. He is listed as one of the founders

of Poasset (Portsmouth) and was a freeman at the settlement of the town

of Newport.

Richard followed Anne Hutchinson to what is now Pelham Bay, on Long

Island in 1642. The story is that they traded with and got on well with

the Indians until the Pequot Wars. The local Indians then stopped

trading and used as their excuse that they were afraid of the unconfined

dogs. They said they would resume trading if the dogs were tied. This

accomplished they attacked the settlement and massacred all but one of

Anne's family. (Of her fourteen children, I think she had six or seven

there with her.) Richard and his family got to their boat, but Richard

and young Richard went ashore for provisions and were massacred. Rebecca

and young Rebecca and John made it back to Rhode Island in the small

open boat. The massacre occurred in 1643. In 1644, Rebecca was paid by

William Roulston for the property Richard sold him in 1642.

Rebecca Maxson, a son of Richard Maggesen and Rebecca Maxson, was

born February 6, 1630/31 in England and died about August 1707 in

Newport, Newport County RI. She married Hugh Mosher about 1665 in

Newport, Newport County RI. Hugh, a son of Nicholas and Lydia (Maxson)

Mosher, was born in 1633 in England and died Newport County RI November

3, 1713.

John Maxson, a son of Richard Maggensen and Rebecca Maxson, was born

March 24, 1637/38 in Aquidneck, RI and died December 17, 1720. He is

buried in Clarke Burying Ground near Paytucket River (1st Hopkinton

Cemetery, Hopkington,RI). He married Mary Mosher about 1665. Mary, a

daughter of Hugh and Lydia (Maxson) Mosher, was born in 1641 in

Triverton, Newport,RI, and died February 2, 1716/17 in Washington

County, RI.

He was married about 1665 and was made freeman at Westerly Oct. 29,

1668. He served as deputy to the general assembly from Westerly 1670,

1686, 1690 and 1705. He was overseer of the poor in 1687. The colony of

Westerly had connected itself as a branch to the Newport Seventh-day

Baptist church of which William Hiscox was pastor. John was a member of

this branch before 1692. In 1708 the Westerly branch was made a separate

church. Sept. 20,1708

John Maxson was ordained to the office of Elder (pastor) to the

congregation in and about Westerly, now called the First Hopkinton SDBC

at Ashway, RI. He was buried in the Clark burying ground near the

Paytucket River.

The early ministers of the First Hopkinton church have been

reinterred on the spot where the church stood and a monument has been

erected to their memory.

John Mosher Maxson, a son of John and May (Mosher) Maxson, was born

October 12, 1666 and died October 18, 1748 in Shrewsbury, Monmouth

County NJ. He married Judith Clarke January 19, 1686/87. Judith, a

daughter of Joseph and Bethia (Hubbard) Clarke, was born October 12,

1667 in Westerly, RI and died in July 1747 in Monmouth County NJ.

John was ordained July 5, 1719 to Elder, or Pastor, by Joseph

Crandall of Newport, RI. He served as the pastor of the Seventh-day

Baptist Church in Westerly from 1720 until his death in 1747. He was

succeeded by Joseph Maxson, his brother.

1739/40 in Shrewsbury, NJ. James, a son of William Jr. and Elizabeth

(Pavior) Davis, born in 1720 in Shrewsbury, NJ and died there September

11, 1777.

James was a member of Seventh Day Baptist Church. He was a ship

builder and carpenter. He was reportedly a loyalist, but switched to a

Colonial James was hit by a stray bullet while watching the "Battle of

Monmouth" and died from the wound.
