1.ROBERT LOWTHER

 

    Robert Lowther was born in Westmeath, Ireland in 1714 and died in Harrison County VA in 1780. He married Aquilla Reese/Reece February 20, 1735/36 in First Presbyterian Church, Philadelphia, PA. Aquilla, a daughter of Joseph and Rebecca Reese, was born in 1715 in Plumstead Township, Bucks County, PA and died in 1747 in Harrison County VA.

    A Robert Lowther is credited with 132 days ser4vice in Captain William Lowther’s company of Va militia during Lord Dunmore’s War in 1774.

    Mary Lowther, a daughter of Robert and Aquilla (Reese) Lowther, was

born in Albemarle County PA in 1740. She married Alexander Morrison in Harrison County VA in 1759. Alexander, a son of Archibald Morrison, was born about 1737 and died in Harrison County about 1820..

    Alexander and Mary came to Harrison County with her parents about

1785.

    Alexander was listed on the "Tithables List" in Harrison County in

1787/88 and 89. He served as surveyor before 1788 and was

on the grand jury in 1791.

5.WILLIAM BEAMER LOWTHER     1.ROBERT LOWTHER

 

     William Beamer Lowther, a son of Robert and Aquilla (Reese) Lowther, was born in Albemarle County VA December 22, 1742 and died in Rithie County VA (WV) October 28, 1814.

    He was Captain of a VA militia company that served 132 days in Lord Dunmore's Ohio campaign in 1774 and was at the Battle of Point Pleasant. He was commissioned a major in the militia by General George Rogers Clark June 21, 1781.  He was commissioned sheriff of Harrison County VA (WV) by the Governor of Virginia June 14, 1783.

    He married Sudna Hughes in Hardy County VA June 1, 1763.  Sudna, a daughter of Thomas and Susannah (Baker) Hughes, was born in Augusta County VA about 17485 and died in Ritchie County VA (WV) in 1829.

    William is widely known as "Colonel William Lowther," because of his services against the Indians during the American Revolution. During the latter part of the war he had charge of the line of scouts along the Ohio River, covering the approaches to the settlements in the Kanawha Valley, and performed that duty to the satisfaction of the State Authorities.

Colonel Lowther in civil life was a Justice of the Peace in the District of West Augusta, the first Sheriff of Harrison and Wood Counties and served as a member of the General Assembly.

    William received a land grant for his Militay service November 22, 1787. "... by Virtue of a certificate in right of Settlement given by the Commissioners for adjusting the Titles to unpatented Lands in the District of Monongalia, Yohogania, and Ohio, and in Consideration of the Ancient composition of Two pound Sterling paid by William LOWTHER into the Treasury of this Commonwealth ..."

Was on duty at Norfolk, Virginia. Occupation farmer. Born in Harrison County, Virginia. ... Died April 30, 1864. Widow's maiden name, Rachel M. Neel; married Alexander Lowther, June 6, 1842." Widow was granted eight dollars a month from March 9, 1818, the date of approval of this act."
