1.ROBERT LOONEY

Traditional family states that Robert Looney was born on the Isle of Man in the English Channel in the late 1600's.  He married Elizabeth Llewellyn.  Supplemental Volume 5 of The WV Heritage Encyclopedia reproduces a statement that Robert was a member of the Jamestown VA settlement.

Leroy W. Tilton states in “The Robert and Elizabeth Looney Family”, “No record of Robert Looney in America has been found earlier than 1734 when Robert and Elizabeth Looney were in Philadelphia at the time their son Peter was born. This is known only because of an interview that Peter had on 28 July 1757 at Philadelphia with a correspondent of the "London Chronicle: or Universal Evening Post." The issue for September 6 - 8 gives an account of Peter's captivity for about a year among the French and Indians at Fort Detroit. Peter stated that he was about 23 years of age, had been born in Philadelphia, and was on his way from Albany to Virginia where his parents lived. It is probable that in 1734 Robert and Elizabeth and their older children, at least 7 sons, had recently arrived in America and that they soon moved westward through Pennsylvania. This family was one of 70 that entered the Colony of Virginia with Alexander Ross and Morgan Bryan, of the Province of Pennsylvania, according to an agreement made as set forth in an order of the Lieutenant Governor and Council of the Colony and Dominion of Virginia dated 25 April 1735”.

Tilton further states. “Baylor's Book of Surveys in Frederick County Courthouse, shows that Robert Looney had a survey on Lunie's Mill Creek in April 1740. The Looney family probably moved south through the Shenandoah Valley about 1739 or 1740. Robert Looney obtained a grant of 250 acres on James River and on Lunie's Mill Creek on 30 July 1742. These lands are not far from Natural Bridge in what had become Augusta County in 1738 (but not organized as such until 1745) and in 1769 became a part of Botetourt County. Consequently, since the Augusta County was not organized, the suits in Orange County continued. Adam Payne sued Robert Luney of trespass in 1745, but after several continuances it was dismissed in 1744. Francis and John Marshall sued Robert Luney for debt in 1744, James Patton being security for Luney. The case was tried by jury 4 August 1744 and a verdict found against Luney for 18 pounds 1 shilling 6 pence, with 1 penny damage, and so recorded 5 October 1745. (Orange Order Book 4).

The old Looney home on the James stood on the south bank of the river and the west bank of the creek, but it was seldom usable and the family operated a ferry at the eddy just above the creek. Robert and his sons hunted, ran the ferry and a mill, grazed cattle and horses, and developed a nursery and orchards. (See Kegley's Virginia Frontier, p. 163; also West Va. Blue Book 1924, and Roanoke Times 4 June 1961.) Looney's Ferry estb. 1742)”

Tilton Also states. “But on 15 November 1762 something happened that made it possible for Looney descendants to get considerable information about Robert and his family. One this day Robert Looney and Elizabeth deeded to John Bowyer 250 acres, the land that was patented in 1742 on 30 July. This seems to have included not only the land verbally given to sons Peter and David but also land previously given to sons Absalom and Daniel. Consequently, certain suits were brought by the heirs of Daniel and of Peter against Robert Looney and John Bowyer, and these affairs were taken or discussed in the court records at length. Robert (1) was active at least as late as August 1764 when he pleaded in answer to such suits that he was drunk (intoxicated) when the instruments were signed, on 20 Nov. 1764 he deeded land, 160 acres at Sinking Springs to Joseph Looney. On 24 May 1765 it was decreed that John Bowyer should reconvey to each of the interested parties their lands. The agreement of 1759 was recorded in the same month. John Bowyer deeded the lands to David Looney, to Peter Looney Jr., son of Peter Looney, deceased and to "Margaret" Looney, daughter and heiress of Daniel.”

“In May 1768 there is recorded an account or record of settlement between Robert Looney and Irwin Patterson's estate. From this it seems that Elizabeth Looney bought one looking glass and sundry goods on 10 May 1745-6 also that ferriage at 20 shillings per annum for 10 years was due from Patterson's estate to Looney.”

“Certain entries at the October term of court in 1770 indicate that Robert was living then, but his death occurred in Oct. or Nov. before his will was proved 13 November 1770.”

10.JOHN LOONEY     1.ROBERT LOONEY

John Looney, a son of Robert and Elizabeth (Llewellyn) Looney, was born about 1732, probably just before the family came to America. In 1749 his name was on the tax list in Augusta County VA. John married Esther Renfro about 1756. Esther, a daughter of Stephen Renfro Sr.  (Will (1802-1804), Estate Book 1, Knox Co., Tenn., 149.), was born about 1739 and may have been the first white female born west of the James River.

John Looney was security with Robert Rowland on 17 March 1756 when his sister-in-law, Margaret (Rhea) Looney administered on the estate of her deceased husband, Robert Looney Jr. On 6 May 1761 John Luney witnessed a power-of-attorney from Charles Milliken of Orange County, North Carolina, to John Buchanan.  (Augusta Deeds A, 277.)  On 17 February 1762 he assisted in the appraisement of the estate of Christian Hicks.  (Augusta Wills 3, 113.)

On 27 September 1767 John Looney purchased of his older brother Adam Looney, the 271 acres known as the Meadow Run or Bryan’s Creek tract which Adam had bought from Colonel James Patton in 1752.  On 4 March 1768, John Looney had 250 acres surveyed on Looney’s Mill Creek along his own patent line; also 196 acres adjoining John Mill’s land.  (Rockingham Co. Surveys 1, 137.)  The 250 acres were purchased from his nephew Peter (3) Looney, but the deed was not made or recorded until 12 January 1796.  (Botetourt Deeds 5, 347.)

When Joseph Looney proved the will of Robert Looney in Botetourt County on 13 November 1770, John Looney was security with Abraham McClellan.  On that day both John and Joseph were on the Grand Jury in Botetourt County, and John was named as “one of the most capable freeholders of this County.”  On 14 May 1771 John Looney succeeded John Mills as overseer of roads, and was again on the Grand Jury.

At the 1810 census of Botetourt County VA, John Looney appears, over 45, with female over 45, living with Robert Looney, 16 to 26, female 16 to 26. On 23 March 1816 John Looney and Esther his wife deeded 315 acres to Robert Looney for 800 pounds.  (Botetourt Co. Deeds 12, 98.)  On 13 April 1817 a tract of John Looney’s in Botetourt County was divided between his sons David Looney (85 acres) and Joseph Looney (82 acres).  (Survey Book 3, 407.)  John’s son Robert sold his land and removed from Botetourt at about this time.  John may have died in 1817. He is not found in the 1820 census of Botetourt County VA.

Esther, widow of John Looney, died on 26 February 1821 in her 82d year, on Sinking Creek, Virginia.  (Natl. Intellingencer, Washington, D.C., 12 July 1821.)

11.PETER LOONEY    1.ROBERT LOONEY

Peter Looney, a son of Robert and Elizabeth (Llewellyn) Looney, was born in Philadelphia about 1734. He about six years old when in 1739 or 1740 his parents moved to the James River settlements near Natural Bridge, Virginia.

On March 6, 1754 Peter Looney became indebted to Colonel James Patton. In 1754 and 1755 Colonel Patton contracted with Peter Looney for 8,000 rails and the erection of a fence.

In 1756 Peter Luney, Sergeant, was in a detachment under Captain Smith appointed to garrison Fort Vause, one of the western defenses on the upper Roanoke, near the present Lafayette, Montgomery County, Virginia, during the French and Indian War.  He was wounded and captured by the Indians when the Fort surrendered on June 25, 1756.

In July 1757, Peter gave an account of this adventure to a Philadelphia representative of the London Chronicle or Universal Evening Post.  The edition of this London paper for September 6-8, 1757 gives a detailed account of the adventures of "Peter Lewney who, for about a year past has been among the French and Indians at Fort Detroit, and informs as follows, viz., that he was an Ensign of a Company of Rangers in the back parts of Virginia, consisting of 70 men, commanded by Captain John Smith.  That last summer . . ., etc."  In short Lewney was carried to Detroit where 300 French families lived.  An Indian King adopted Lewney as a brother and he sat in their councils.  He heard the French commander order Indians to go to Fort Dequesne and to Fort Cumberland and destroy all the English inhabitants.  The Indians and some French left in April 1757.  Lewney left Detroit with Indians going 280 miles to Niagara with furs to purchase Indian goods.

The French had 30 men at the Fort at the Falls and 300 men with 24 guns at Fort Niagara.  A French force of 280 men arrived on their way to Fort Duquesne.  Lewney met Wm. Philips, who was captured at Oswego, New York, and agreeing to escape, they traveled 200 miles to Oswego without seeing an Indian.  Thence they proceeded to the Mohawk River where they received food from friendly Indians.  They arrived at Albany on  July 12, 1757.  Lewney went to Virginia where his parents lived.  "He was born in this town, and is about 23 years of age."  (See Mississippi Valley History Review 13 pp 15, 76, 95).

Peter Looney was still indebted to (the estate of) James Patton on February 17, 1758; indebted as of March 6, 1754.  Apparently Peter made claims for recompense for the losses (horse, saddle, bridle, rifle, etc.) Which he sustained at Fort Vause, and a committee recommended that he should receive £46:16 as recompense and as a reward for his bravery. (See Journal of House of Burgesses. 1758- 1761), pp 221, 229).

Peter married Margaret Lauderdale about 1759. Margaret was a daughter of James Maitland Lauderdale.

On October 11, 1759, Peter and his brother David signed an agreement with their father regarding inheritance of his lands in return for building a house and for their proposed care of their parents.

On December 11, 1759, Peter Luney, Thomas Ramsey and John Potts appraised the estate of Robert Clark.  On March 13, 1760, Peter Luney was one of the witnesses of John Bowen's will.  Peter Looney must have died between March 13 and April 13, 1760 when Peter Looney, heir at law of Peter Looney, deceased, proved to the Augusta County court that the said Peter Looney, deceased, served as a sergeant until taken prisoner by the Indians in the year 1756, etc., and that he never proved such service nor obtained any land.

However, it is not yet certain that this proof of service was made before 1761 instead of 1760.  For example, it was not until November 8, 1760 that Margaret Luney (with James Litherdale and James Mills) gave bond as admx of Peter Luney (Will Book 2, p 421).  Errors concerning new and old style dates may be involved.)

The appraisement of Peter Luney's estate, made by George Adams, Thomas Ramsey, and Robert Montgomery, was not recorded until August 18, 1761.

On May 18, 1762, Robert Breckinridge was appointed guardian to Peter Looney, an infant, in order to prosecute a suit in Chancery against his grandfather.  In June 1763 there is record of a suit vs Haines by "Margaret Luney, relict of Peter Luney, 1761".

Margaret (Lauderdale) Looney married James McCain, probably before November 18, 1767 when James Ledderdale asked counter security from Margaret Looney, admx of Peter Looney, since intermarried with James McKain.  On March 16, 1768, James McKain and Jonathan Smith gave bond to James Ledderdale to secure Ledderdale who, with John Mills, now dead, was surety of Margaret Looney as admx of Peter Looney.  On the same day a final account of the estate of Peter Looney by James McCain and Margaret, his wife, showed cash payments to Daniel Smith, Robert Looney, Abraham (probably Absalom) Looney and David Looney, etc.  On March 17, 1768 Jonathan Smith gave bond, with Joseph Luney, as guardian to Peter Looney, orphan of Peter Looney.  On 22 Mar 1768 an order summoning James McCain and Margaret (Looney, wife of Peter) was dismissed.  In June 1769 there was recorded a judgment as of January 22, 1768, in favor of Margaret Cain, formerly Margaret Looney, wife of Peter Looney, deceased, vs Robt. Breckenridge.

17.PETER LOONEY    10.JOHN LOONEY     1.ROBERT LOONEY

Peter Looney, a son of John and Ester "Hettie" (Renfro) Looney, was born about 1761. He married Judith Robinson with a bond dated March 10, 1786 in Franklin County VA. Judith was a daughter of Thomas and Jane Magdalin Robinson.

On November 15, 1782 Land Office Treasury Warrant 14839 was issued to Peter Looney according to the “Act of Assembly” of the Legislature of Virginia of May 1779.  (See Henning’s Statutes, Vol. 7, app., Vol. 10, p. 35, 40.) Under the warrant 120 acres were surveyed to him in Franklin County, Virginia, September 28, 1789, on the south side of Blackwater River on Thomas Robertson’s line.  A Certificate of Survey was recorded 30 October 1792 and the grant recorded as of August 14, 1793.  (Va. Grant Book 29, 222.)

The 1810 census of Franklin County, Virginia, shows that Peter Luney had a wife of same age group (i.e., b previous to 1765) and 1 girl 10-16 and another 16-26.  In 1820 Judith was head of the household with 1 boy and 1 girl, both under 10, and 2 girsl 18-26.  No Looneys were found at the 1830 or 1850 census of Franklin County, but in 1840 Judy Luny 40-50 was listed with 1 boy 10-15.

The inventory of the personal estate of Peter Louna, deceased, was appraised December 5, 1812 is of record in Franklin County, Virginia.  (Wills 2, 21.)

On April 12, 1847 Jane and Judith Looney sold to Isaac Shoumaker their interest as heirs of Peter Luney, deceased, in 120 acres on Blackwater River.  (Franklin Deeds 17, 341.)

23.JOSEPH LOONEY     10.JOHN LOONEY     1.ROBERT LOONEY

Joseph Looney, a son of John and Ester "Hettie" (Renfro) Looney, was born January 4, 1783, and died in 1867 at he age of 84.  He married Nancy Hendrickson Jun3 5, 1806 in Botetourt Couty VA with a bond dated May 13, 1806. Botetourt County Marriage Register 157. Nancy, a daughter of Zachariah Hendrickson, was born August 20, 1785.  (See House of Looney by Coyd A. Looney.)

On June 9, 1807 John Looney deeded to his son Joseph 82 acres of land.  (Botetourt Deeds 9, 310.)  At the 1810 census, Botetourt County, Joseph is listed with wife, and with 2 children under 10 years.

Bounty-land papers (3767-80-50 Botetourt Co.; 22821-80-55 Craig Co.) show that Joseph volunteered July 12, 1813 and served as 1st Corporal in Captain Joseph Hannah’s Company of the 121st Regiment of Virginia Militia under Colonel James McDowell in the War of 1812, and was discharged 10 January 1814 at Norfolk, VA.

On January 30, 1836, for $500, Joseph and Nancy Looney sold to daughter Elizabeth Looney 114 acres on John’s Creek of James River, part of land conveyed by Andrew Taylor to Joseph Looney.  (Botetourt Deeds 21, 427.)

On November 8, 1850 in Botetourt County, aged 67, and again on April 23, 1855 in Craig County, aged 71, Joseph (3) signed papers applying for bounty land for his military services. In 1860 they are listed as living alone in Craig County, aged 78 and 70, and Joseph’s occupation is listed as carpenter.

24.JOHN LOONEY JR.   10.JOHN LOONEY     1.ROBERT LOONEY

John Looney Jr., a son of John and Ester "Hettie" (Renfro) Looney,  was born about 1784, presumably after the death of an older brother John, and married Elizabeth Walker March 29, 1804 in Botetourt County VA. Elizabeth was a daughter of George Walker Sr.  (Botetourt Mar. Reg. 540; John Helms, minister.)

On June 9, 1807 John received from his father John Looney Senior, for love and affection and $5, 200 acres in valley of Sinking Creek, mention being made of a corner of the grant to Peter Looney on Stone Run of Craig’s Creek.  (For plots see Surveyor’s Book 3, 408, 447, 460; Botetourt Deeds 9, 309.)

John may have served in the War of 1812 with his brothers Robert and Joseph.  The Pay Rolls of Milita in the Virginia Archives for the 121st Regiment, Botetourt County, commanded by Colonel James McDowell show that John Walker, Ensign, John Looney, Corp. and “Robert Looney Corp. (or Joseph)” were on the payroll during 11 July to 28 September 1813.

An appraisement and inventory of John’s estate was reported at May Court, 1814.  (Botetourt Wills B, 422.)  The widow Elizabeth Looney was married to William E. Reynolds (bond 26 June 1817.  Botetourt Mar. Reg. 246.)  In December 1825 John Looney’s land was divided, naming the heirs. The estate was settled February 26, 1825 by Elizabeth Reynolds, Administratrix.  (Wills D, 176.)

Robert Looney, a son of John and Ester "Hettie" (Renfro) Looney, was born in Botetourt County VA February 22, 1786 and died in Roane County WV January 6, 1870.  He married Catharine Stover in Botetourt County. Their marriage (bond) was dated December 9, 1809 in Botetourt County Marriage Register 186 was signed by John Looney Sr. as father of the Groom. Catharine, a daughter of George Stover was born in Pennsylvania in 1785 and died in Roane County WV March 14, 1865.

On June 26, 1813 Robert Looney volunteered in Botetourt County for 3 months and served 2 months or more as Corporal in Captain Joseph Hannah’s Company in the 4th (or 121st) Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by Colonel James McDowell.  He was discharged at Fairfield, near Richmond, on 13 August 1813 (having furnished a substitute).  (Bounty-land application papers 76301-40-50; 22807-160-55.)

On March 23, 1816 Robert Looney purchased from his parents 315 acres for 800 pounds.  (Botetourt Deeds 12, 98.)  By June 11, 1818 Robert was described as of Russell County, Virginia, when he purchased 76 acres there on both sides of Lewis Creek of Clinch River from Martin Honaker and wife Lyddy.  On October 17, 1818 he purchased another tract of 171 acres from the same parties.  (Russell Deeds 6, 124, 134, or 174.)

Robert Luney and wife, both 26-45, are listed in the Russell County VA census of 1820 with 4 girls and 1 boy under 10 years.  On 3 July 1825 Robert (3) Looney bought 100 acres in Russell County on Louisa Creek of Sandy River from John Wilson, attorney for Thomas Wilson.  (Russell Deeds 7, 287.)

On July 20, 1832 Robert (3) and Catherine his wife sold their 247 acres, known as Mill Farm on Louisa Creek, to Harry Smith. (Russell Deeds 9, 55.)  Five months later on December 28, 1832 they sold to Joseph Looney of Russell County their 100 acres on Sandy River.  (Russell Deeds 9, 201.)

Bishop’s History of Roane County states that in or about 1839 Robert and Catherine Looney removed to a location near the present Looneyville and Walton, south of Spencer, in what is now Roane County, WV. According to traditions in Buchanan County, Virgina, Robert made a dugout canoe 51 feet long and 4 feet wide from a very large tree and took his family and possessions by water down the Louisa and Sandy to the Kanawha, a distance of nearly 100 miles, and then some 30 or 40 miles up the Main Branch of Poca, a northern tributary of the Kanawha.

In 1850 this region was within the bounds of Kanawha County, Virginia, and the Federal Census lists Robert Looney 63, blacksmith, born Virginia; and Catherine 63, born Pennsylvania.  With them lived David Looney 22, laborer, born Virginia, and Abraham Looney 69, laborer, born Virginia.  A neighbor was Jennetta A. Looney 20, with Frances O. Looney 3 months old.

27.PETER LOONEY JR.   11.PETER LOONEY    1.ROBERT LOONEY

Peter Looney Jr., a son of Peter and Margaret (Lauderdale) Looney, was born in Botetourt County, Virginia, October 1, 1760, according to his own statement in his application for U. S. pension, and died in Marshall County TN February 16, 1851.  His first wife is unknown, but her surname is reportedly Long. His second wife was Elizabeth (----) Hogan.

On May 18, 1762, Robert Brechenridge was guardian-in-fact to Peter Looney, Jr., for the prosecution of a suit against Peter's grandfather, Robert Looney.

On March 15, 1765, Absalum Luney and Margaret deeded to Peter Luney, heir-at-law of Peter Luney, deceased, for £80, a tract of 180 acres on Long Run, a branch of James River, adjoining another tract belonging to Peter, formerly in possession of Robert Looney, Sr.  The witnesses were David Looney, etc.  This deed was delivered to Peter Looney September 26, 1783.

Jonathan Smith was on March 17, 1768 appointed as guardian to Peter Looney, orphan of Peter Looney; and Jonathan Smith gave bond with Joseph Luney.  On December 8, 1772 Joseph Looney was appointed guardian of Peter Looney, son of Peter Looney, deceased, in place of James McCain and Jonathan Smith who were discharged from that office. George Skillem was security. Then on November 15, 1775, with approval of the court, Peter Looney, orphan of Peter Looney, deceased, chose James Letherdale, Jr. for his guardian.  Bond for £500 was made.

The all-important record evidence in distinguishing the Peter Looneys of Sumner County, Tennessee, is found in the pension application papers of Peter Luna of Lincoln County, Tennessee, dated October 16, 1832, September 20, 1833, and of Marshall County, January 16, 1846.  He declares: "I was born in Botetourt county in Virginia on the first day of October 1760 according to the information derived from my mother, but I have no record of my age."  He was in the battle of the Long Island of Holston before he enlisted under Captain Wm. Coke.  He "volunteered at Long Island of Holstoun in the State of Virginia" for six months.  "When he entered the service he lived about fifteen miles above the long Islands on Houlston River."  He was a frontier guard during treaty time and was stationed at Long Island until some time after the treaty.  He was discharged in 1778 or at least in the year of conclusion of the treaty at the Long Island of Holston.  He acted as a scouting party and was not in regular service until in 1779 when he was called into service in captain Anderson's Company for one month to guard Blackmore's Station.

He served under Captain Isaac Bledsoe and Colonel Russell.  After this time he "went to Cumberland River and arrived at the place where Nashville stands two days before Christmas, 1779, and has lived in the counties of Davidson, Sumner and Lincoln ever since."  He volunteered and "went from Cumberland to Kentucky in the year 1782 as well as he recollects" --- and served 14 or 21 days under Colonel Logan against the Indians at Blue Lick.  George Blackmore of Lincoln County (1832) certified that Blackmore's Station on Clinch River was built and kept by, and named after, his father, John Blackmore.  George was a drummer when Peter Luna was there and they both came to Cumberland in the same year and lived as neighbors ever since, with few exceptions.

His pension (S1554) was granted November 19, 1833 commencing March 4, 1831.  Records of payments show that in September 1836 the name of Peter Luna, Senior, Private and Sergeant, was transferred to the Roll for payment a Pulaski, Tennessee.

Fort Patrick Henry at Kingsport (then King's Mills) was the starting point in 1779 from which Colonel John Donelson went down the Holston and Tennessee Rivers to established a colony on the site of Nashville in the region which he had purchased from the Indians in March 1775.  At the mouth of Clinch River, Colonel Donelson was joined by a party of immigrants under Captain John Blackmore.  Peter Looney, Moses Renfroe, James Renfroe and James Cain (probably Junior) are sometimes said (Haywood's History of Tennessee) to have been with Donelson on this trip, and Peter Looney is listed among those who had log cabins at Big Salt Lick on the Cumberland River in April 1780.  But Peter Looney of this sketch states the he arrived at the site of Nashborough two days before Christmas, 1779.  Consequently, he went overland with Robertson's Company and not with Donelson who did no arrive until 24 Apr 1780.  Among the 250 or 260 persons who signed the so-called "Cumberland Compact", that is, "Articles of Agreement, or Compact of Government entered into by settlers on the Cumberland River, May 1, 1780" when Peter Luney, John Luney or Lony, James Cain and John Crow.  It seems possible that both Peters were there, one aged 25 and one 22.  (It is reported that the name of John Lony on the Compact was indeed that of Jonathan abbreviated as Jon.)

Apparently Peter Luna decided to purchase 640 acres in addition to his preemption.  His purchase was on north side of Cumberland River about one mile southwest of Asher's Station (about five mile south of modern Gallatin, Sumner County, Tennessee) and his preemption was about six miles southwest of his purchase and on the south side of Cumberland, above the mouth of Spencer Creek.       Shortly after Sumner County was formed in 1786, the two Peter Looneys began to avoid ambiguity and confusion by slight changes in the signatures.  Peter Jr. returned to the old style form of Luna and often wrote (P) or Pitman in or after his name.

Peter Luna was commissioned Captain of Luna's Company, Sumner County Militia, Territory South of the Ohio, on 14 Jul 1792.  He had previously been Ensign.  (Territorial Papers U.S. IV, p 451.)  His name is found on a pay roll at Knoxville, 21 Jul 1795, as having commanded from 1 to 28 Feb 1794; one month at $40.

Previous to 1814 Peter Looney moved from Sumner to Lincoln County, Tennessee, where his cousin Jonathan lived. In 1840 in Marshall County, just north of Lincoln County, Peter Luna, Sr. is listed as 70/80 with 1 female of same age group and 12 slaves.  Peter was still an active man and was appointed on April 27, 1840 with his son, James, to view a road

It is unlikely that Peter moved from Lincoln to Marshall County between 1830 and 1840.  When Marshall County was created it may have merely included that part of Lincoln County in which Peter lived.

After years of searching by various persons, the unindexed will of Peter Luna of Marshall County was found by James L. Bryant at Lewisburg, Tennessee, in Will Book A, pp 260 to 264.  It was dated December 14, 1846, with a codicil of March 25, 1848.  Peter names sons Elisha (deceased), James (executor), Peter and John C. Luna (deceased); also daughters Peggy (Luna) Hogan (deceased), Jenny (or Amy) Hogan (wife of Anthony Hogan), Nancy Milam, Polly (or Dolly) Bryant (wife of Gray Bryant).

52.ELISHA LOONEY   27.PETER LOONEY JR.   11.PETER LOONEY    1.ROBERT LOONEY

Elisha Looney, a son of Peter Looney Jr. was born on the Cumberland River about 1784 in present day TN and died in DeKalb County TN April 27, 1841 or 1842. He married Mary Ann “Polly” Enex with bond of January 2, 1804 in Sumner County TN. Mary was born in NC in 1785 or in VA in 1786.

Elisha served in the War of 1812. He was mustered into service at Fayetteville September 20, 1814 and served in the 2nd Regiment of W. Tennessee Militia as a private under Captain James Tubbs and Lieutenant Colonel Leroy Hammons.  He was honorably discharged April 10, 1815 at Wilson Springs, Madison County, Mississippi Territory.

DeKalb County was created in 1837 and may have included Elisha Luna's land.  He is listed there in 1840 as Elisha Luna 50/60 with female in same age group.  Also listed are Andrew Luna 20/30 and Peter Luna 20/30 who were probably sons of Elisha and Mary Luna.

Elisha Luna probably died in 1841.  An account of the sale of his effects was filed at the August term of court in DeKalb County in that year. In applications for bounty land in 1850 and again in 1855, the widow, Mary, stated that Elisha died 27 Apr 1841 or 1842 in DeKalb County.  Her application paper of 1855 was dated in White County (next east of DeKalb).  Testimony was given in the 1850 paper that Elisha and Mary had reared a large family, all of lawful age as of that date.

At the 1860 census of DeKalb County, Mary A. Luna lived with her son, Elisha, 34, still near her daughter, Martha Atnip, 42, and another son, Andrew E. Luna, 49.  Their post office was Smithville.

53.JAMES LUNA   27.PETER LOONEY JR.   11.PETER LOONEY    1.ROBERT LOONEY

James Luna, a son of Peter Looney Jr., was born near the Cumberland Riven in present Day TN January 22, 1785 and died August 27, 1872. He married Mary Thomas “Polly” Smith with a bond of September 17. 1804 Sumner County TN. (Sumner County Marriage Records, p. 18).       Mary, a daughter of John and Mary (Thomas) Smith, was born in North Carolina February 24, 1788 and died July 16, 1855.  Her marker in New Hope cemetery in Marshall County TN says July 10, 1856.

James enlisted in the Tennessee Militia October 4, 1813 and served as Ensign until discharged January 4, 1814 in the company commanded by Captain John Porter, in Colonel John K. Winn's Regiment, General Carroll's Brigade.  He was in the Battle of Talladega on November 9, 1813 and at Forts Strather and Deposit.  His application for land bounty was dated November 7, 1850.  He received 40 acres.  His declarations of service in applications for pension (SO 21295, SC 13616) were dated April 13, 1855 and June 10, 1871 in Lewisburg, Marshall County TN.

James Luna removed from Sumner to Lincoln County before 1820, where he was listed at the 1820 census and also in 1830.  He lived south of Lewisburg in that part of Lincoln that was to become Marshall County.

James Luna and family were enumerated in the 1840 census of Marshall County and listed again in 1850, but in 1860 he lived alone.  He was executor of the will of his father Peter Luna, and a record of his accounting is dated February 12, 1853 (Marshall County Wills Book B p. 109).

James Luna's own will was dated August 8, 1868 and proved January 7,  1873.  James died 28 Dec 1872 (New Hope Cemetery gravestone).  Mary, his wife, had died 10 Jul 1856 and was also buried in the New Hope Cemetery.

Peter Luna, a son of Peter Looney Jr., was born near the Cumberland Riven in present day TN about 1788 and died after 1850 in Marshall County TN. He married Mary “Polly” Barnes with a bond of November 7, 1804 in Sumner County TN. (Sumner County marriage Records p 18).

Peter volunteered for service in the Fourth Regiment of Tennessee Mounted Gunmen and was mustered in at Fayetteville about February 1, Feb 1814 and served as Second Sergeant under Captain George Smith in the war with the Creek Indian Nation until honorably discharged on April 15, 1814.  His bounty land applications were numbered 12999-40-50 and 36951-20-55 and dated 28 Oct 1850 and 13 Apr 1855, Marshall County, Tennessee.

Peter and family were enumerated in 1820  as “ Peter Loony” and in 1830 as ‘Peter Luna Jr.” in Lincoln County TN, but in 1840 and 1850 in Marshall County, probably because of formation a new county.  In the 1850 census of Marshall County, Peter Luna was 62 years old and Polly as She died July 10, 1856.  (gravestone, New Hope Cemetery).        According to J. D. Luna's letter written in 1925, Peter, his great-grandfather, was called "Wagoner Pete".

183.ELISHA LUNA    53.JAMES LUNA   27.PETER LOONEY JR.   11.PETER LOONEY    1.ROBERT LOONEY

Elisha Luna, a son of James and Mary Thomas (Smith) Luna, was born in Lincoln County TN March 19, 1819. He married Eliza B. Gray in Lincoln County in 1834.

Elisha served through the Mexican War as an orderly sergeant under General Zachary Taylor and attained the grade of Third Sergeant.  Owing to arduous labor in the hot sun, Elisha became overheated to an extent he had chronic sore eyes and they gradually became worse until he was almost blind at the time of his death.  Some twenty years before his death he applied for a pension and was allowed $72.00 per month.

Elisha Luna and his family relocated on Pine Creek, Ozark County, MO, approximately 10 miles northeast of the present site of Gainsville, MO in 1854.  They owned one yoke of steers, a horse and a wagon.  Elisha built a cabin and cleared a few acres of land which he planted in corn the following spring.  They had to sell the oxen, the horse died as soon as the corn was planted and, even though the crop had to be cultivated with a hoe, they raised excellent corn.

Elisha took no part in the Civil War, because the disease of his eyes prevented his serving. His family remembered the war as being a period of terrible times.  Several men were killed in the settlement where they lived and a number of dwellings were also burned.  This was done by guerillas of both sides.  Elisha's family suffered in common with others in their section, but their greatest suffering was after their dwelling, including the contents, was burned on Decrmber 24, 1864, along with 600 bushels of corn.  The party that destroyed the house consisted of twelve men who came up from Arkansas and killed two men and burned three other houses besides the Luna's.  This was done in retaliation on a party of men who had gone down into Arkansas and killed a few men and burned four houses.  Though Elisha was almost blind, he escaped being killed by getting to a place of concealment before the men reached the house.  The men loaded up his wagon with part of the best of the household goods and some of the men went up the creek a short distance to hunt the oxen to pull the wagon away but they did not find the cattle and as soon as they came back to the house they slashed the wagon wheels to pieces with axes and set the wagon, house and corn crib on fire.  Their youngest daughter "Meelee" was just four months old.  Her mother, Eliza, had put a feather bed down on the ground and laid the infant on it but the guerillas would not permit the child to rest but a moment when they took it up from the bed.  Then they picked up the bed and threw it into the roaring flames.

On the same evening their house was burned, they built a temporary shelter of lumber that the guerillas forgot to destroy.  With the remainder of the lumber, they made some boxes long enough and wide enough for three of the family to sleep in each and filled them all with dry leaves.  This was their bedding until they could prepare something better.

The anniversary of the sixtieth year of the marriage of Elisha and Eliza Luna occurred in 1894.  They announced that they wanted a reunion of their children, sons-in law, daughters-in law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives.  It was a great day for the offspring and old folks, for near 300 kinsmen gathered that day to celebrate their anniversary.

Six years later, in 1900, both Elisha and Eliza Luna completed their mortal life, each being 81 years of age.  They were placed at rest on a rise behind their home on Pine Creek, where they had toiled so long to rear their large family of children.
