1.NICHOLAS LINGER

 

    Nicholas Linger was born in Prussia about 1764 and died in Harrison County VA in 1819. He married Margaret McNemar. Margaret was born about 1764 and died in Harrison County in 1827.

      Traditional family history says that Nicholas came from Germany with the Hussein Army during the American Revolution and was captured at Trenton, NJ. Another story is that he stowed away on a ship and came to America. He was first listed in the 1786 Tax List of Hardy County. Purchased 60 acres in 12 April 1790 from John Harris for 55 pounds in Hardy County. The land was sold to Christopher Martin in 1802. Land was on Knobby Mountain adjoining land of Phillip McNemar. In 1802 he purchased 200 acres on Bonnett Run (now Life Run) and in 1816 400 acres on Stonecoal Creek.

    Margaret Linger, a daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (McNemar) Linger, was born in Va in 1781 and died in Lewis County Va in 1835. She married Peter Bonnett in Harrison County VA February 27, 1806. Peter, a son of Samuel and Mary Elizabeth (Lorentz) Bonnett, was born in VA in 1764 and died in Southern IL in 1835.

    After Margaret died, Peter moved to Van Buren County IL in 1835.

    Mary Linger, a daughter of Nicholas and Margaret (McNemar) Linger, was born in Harrison County in 1788 and died after 1860. She married Lewis Bonnett in Harrison County VA April 4, 1804. Lewis, a son of Samuel and Mary Elizabeth (Lorentz) Bonnett, and a twin of Jacob Bonnett, was born in 1762 and died in Van Buren County IA January 7, 1850. Lewis and Mary moved from Lewis County VA to Van Buren County IA about 1835. After Lewis died, Mary returned to VA and married a widower, Isaac Dix, in Lewis County April 18, 1854. Isaac was born about 1788 and died in Lewis County in 1860. His first wife, Elizabeth, had died in 1849.

Philip McNemar Linger, a son of Nicholas and Margaret (McNemar) Linger, was born in VA September 19, 1799 and died in Lewis county WV October 20, 1877. He married Sarah Cutright August 2, 1818. Sarah, a daughter of Abraham and Susannah Cutright, was born in VA February 25, 1796 and died in Lewis County WV in January 1880.

      Philip[ bought propery from a Mr. Beechler in 1817 and built a log house.

Fred Augustus Linger, a son of William Bradshaw and Anna Elizabeth (Sexton) Linger, was born January 12, 1885 in Lewis County WV and died April 12, 1952 in Upshur County WV. He married Sallie Gay Jones October 1, 1911. Sallie, a daughter of Samuel C. and Catherine E. (Peterson) Jones , was born May 16, 1885 in Lewis County and died April 25, 1974 Upshur County WV, both are buried in Heavner Cemetery in Upshur County WV.

Fred was owner and operator of a livery stable in Weston WV, and later became a street car operator between Weston and Clarksburg, WV. He served for a period of time as Superintendent of the WV Penitentiary Farm near Moundsville, WV.

William Jones Linger, a son of Fred Augustus and Sallie Gay (Jones) Linger was born July 2, 1922 in Lewis County WV. He married Lorna Irene Westfall in Upshur County WV September 24, 1950. Lorna, a daughter Hobert and Clarice (Ireland) Westfall, was born in Upshur County February 5, 1928.

William is a veteran of World War II having served in both European and Asian theaters.
