1.HANS GEORGE LANTZ

Hans George Lantz was born in the Palantine area of present day

Germany about 1700. On October 29, 1739, the ship "Two Brothers" arrived

in Philadelphia. This ship which had sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, to

Leith, Scotland and then to America . The passengers were listed as

being "Palatinates" indicating they came from the area known as the

Palatinate, located in what is now the southwestern part of Germany.

Hans George Lantz and his family came from about 15 miles south of

Heidelberg near the city of Speyer which is now part of Bavaria. Hans

George brought his wife Cathrine, and son Hans George ship.

It was the custom of Germans to use the name "Hans" several times

in naming sons. It was a term of endearment when used as a prefix to

given names and follows the old German custom of then using the middle

name as a call name. This is true in our family, for in documents the

"Hans" is dropped and our immigrant ancestor became known as "George

Lantz." The Lantz family settled in Germantown Pennsylvania where Hans

George the second met Maria Margaretha Benderin.

Hans George Lantz was born about 1725 and died in Shenandoah County

VA in 1793. His will is dated December 7, 1792 and was probated in

Shenandoah County March 12, 1793. The records of St. Michael's

Evangelical church states that "Hans George Lantz, being a single young

man, in good standing, living in the house of Wilhelm Wagner, married

this day, December 12, 1752, Maria Margaretha Benderin, a young woman,

single and of the reformed religion, having worked her indenture to

Richard Wahl of Whitemarsh, was free to marry." Maria had come to this

country with her mother, Maria Johanna Benderin, a widow and two

sisters. They arrived the same year as the Lantz family.

Hans George and Maria moved from Pennsylvania to Shenandoah County, VA

about 1754 with one son John (Johannes) Lantz.

John (Johannes) Lantz, Children of Hans George and Maria Margaretha

(Benderin) Lantz, was born June 5, 1749 and died in Greene County PA

March 27, 1817. He married Clara Fuschain June 23, 1772. Clara was a

daughter of Adam Fuschain. He married Barbara Waggoner about 1780.

Barbara, a daughter of Wilhelm and Agnesa Waggoner, was born about 1756

and died in Wetzel County VA in February 1850.

John served the Colonies in the American Revolution.

When John died, he owned over 1,000 acres of adjoining land in

Monongalia County VA and Greene County PA.

and died in Guernsey County OH November 15, 1860.

The family moved from Greene County PA to Guernsey County OH in

September 1827.
