Tracing the Kuhl family history is rendered difficult by the various spellings of the family name in records. In the different of the 1850 and 1860 census records, the name is spelled "Cool", "Cole", "Khule" and "Kuhl."

1.HENRY KUHL

Henry Kuhl was born in Germany in 1802 and married Catharine Yeagle there. Catharine was born in Germany March 9, 1804. Three sons were born in Germany. The family arrived at Baltimore, Maryland in September 1839. They moved to Lewis County VA (WV), where three children were born from 1841 to 1849. They were enumerated in the 1850 census of Braxton County VA (WV).

Catharine died in Braxton County February 5, 1854. Henry married Elizabeth "Betsy" Skidmore in Braxton County May 16, 1855. Elizabeth, a daughter of Levi and Nancy (Belknap) Skidmore, was born in 1829 and died in 1907. The 1860 Braxton County census lists the family and names two sons, Reuben and Westley, who were not listed in Henry's family in the 1850 census.

Henry and Gabriel Windon were hanged by the Union Army at Sutton, Braxton County May 9, 1862. They had been convicted of killing either a "uniformed soldier" or a "Union camp follower", depending on the source.

John Davidson Sutton described the incident in his "History of Braxton County and Central West Virginia" page 203.

"Just at the beginning of the Civil war when the first Federal troops passed through the county, a boy from Ohio had followed the army as far as Glenville. Some parties say, however, that he came as far as Sutton, but it is in doubt as to what place he left the army. At any rate, he desired to return to his home and started across the country by was of Steer creek, stopping at Henry Cole's to get something to eat. Cole, a man named Windon, also a Conrad, were some

distance down the creek working in the hay harvest. Mrs. Cole, when she found out that the boy had come from Ohio and had been with the Federal army, ran down and told her husband and Windon, while the boy was eating his dinner, that there was a Yankee at the house. They waylaid him as he came down where they were at work. They killed the boy, cut his head off with a scythe and hid his body in a stone or log pile. Conrad fled and was never heard of. Windon hinted it to a

man named Simpton while they were both intoxicated. Cole and Windon were arrested and tried by a court in Charleston, Kanawha county, and sentenced to be hanged. The execution took place in Sutton in the fall of 1862, the same being carried out by the military authorities. Their bodies were buried on the Town Hill. One of the streets now passes over their remains. Mrs. Cole being in delicate health, was allowed to escape. One of Cole's sons afterward volunteered and served through the war in the Tenth West Virginia Infantry. Nothing is

recorded in the border warfare of our country that equals this in cold blooded atrocity."

Thomas Bland Camden mentions Henry Kuhl in his article titled "My Receollections and Experiences of the Civil War," published in the Weston Democrat in 1927. Camden was arrested as a Southern sympathizer and confined at Camp Chase in Ohio. Camden wrote :

"A prisoner by the name of Kuhl from Steer Creek, Braxton County, who was suspected of being implicated in the murder of a Federal Soldier, with two others, who hanged for it at Sutton, was there with ball and chain to his leg, shich he could slip off and on as he pleased, as the guard came and went. He was adept at ring making and inlaying with silver. He made one with TBC in silver letters, inlaid, which I have yet."

3.WILLIAM HARRISON KUHL 1.HENRY KUHL

William Harrison Kuhl, a son of Henry and Catharine (Yeagle) Kuhl,

was born in Germany in 1834 and came to America with his family in

September 1839. He married Mary C. Hefner in Gilmer County VA (WV)

January 8, 1860. Mary, a daughter of Peter and Susannah Hefner, was

born in Pendleton County VA in 1837 and died in Gilmer County in 1924.

William served the Union in Co G 10th W.Va. Volunteer Infantry

during the Civil War.

One source reports that William and his brother Henry changed

their names to Cole after the Civil War.

4.CONRAD KUHL 1.HENRY KUHL

Conrad Kuhl, a son of Henry and Catharine (Yeagle) Kuhl, was born

in Germany October 16, 1836 and died in Gilmer County WV December 29,

1923. He married Eliza Jane Rutherford in Gilmer County VA (WV) May

15, 1859. Jane, a daughter of Philip and Emzy (Stout) Rutherford, was

born in Lewis County VA May 11, 1840 and died in Gilmer county

December 1, 1923.

Conrad was reportedly arrested and confined in Fort Delaware

during the Civil era for refusing to report for the Union draft.

5.CHRISTIAN KUHL 1.HENRY KUHL

Christian Kuhl, a son of Henry and Catharine (Yeagle) Kuhl, was born at Baltimore, Md October 19, 1839 and died in Gilmer County, WV October 25, 1918.

Christian enlisted in Co. D, 31st VA Volunteer Infantry at Glenville, Gilmer County VA May 31, 1861. He was in 33 Civil War battles and skirmishes and received four wounds. He was wounded and captured at Petersburg VA March 25, 1865 and taken to City Point VA (now Hopewell) and then to Lincoln Army Hospital at Washington, D.C. Lee surrendered April 10, 1865 and Christian signed an Oath of Allegiance June 10,1865 and was released from Lincoln Hospital June 14, 1865.

He married Emsey Ellen Heater in Gilmer County, WV October 28, 1866. Emsey, a daughter of Jemason and Elizabeth (Stout) Heater, was born in Gilmer County VA (WV) June 7, 1848 and died in Braxton County July 30, 1925.

Christina was one of trhe builders of Job’s Temple in gilmer County WV and was ordained a Methodist minister in 1885.

Henry J. Cole, a son of Henry and Catharine (Yeagle) Kuhl, was

born in Lewis County VA (WV) November 27, 1846 and died there April

24, 1919. He married Sarah Lewis in Lewis County February 21, 1871.

Sarah was born in Lewis County October 23, 1843 and died there

November 6, 1879. His second wife was Sarah Rollyson.

Henry served the Union in the Civil War in Co I, 3rd W.Va.

Cavalry. He allegedly enlisted in the Union Army under the name Cole

about the time that his father was hanged.

Rebecca Kuhl, a daughter of Henry and Catharine (Yeagle) Kuhl, was

born about 1849, probably at Baltimore, MD and died in Braxton County

WV November 15, 1930. She married Hezekiah Stout in gilmer County WV

October 28, 1866. Hezekiah, a son of Sylvanus and Nancy (Ball) Stout,

was born in 1847 and died March 18, 1928.

son of William H. and Phoebe E. Bragg, was born in Braxton County Va

(WV) in 1860.

Calhoun County WV in 1896.

County May 14, 1891. Peter was born in Lewis County WV January 19,

1865 and died September 29, 1941.

Rosa Helen Kuhl. a daughter of Christian and Emsey Ellen (Heater) Kuhl, was born in Gilmer County, WV August 13, 1870 and is died in Brevard County FL January 29, 1930.

Rosa married Lonzo McAlaster "Chub" Martin in Gilmer County September 25, 1890. Chub, a son of Cyrus S. and Mary C. Martin, was born in Wirt County WV February 12, 1865 and died in Gilmer County, WV September 17, 1893.

Rosa married Fielding T. Tenney in Gilmer County August 13, 1898.

Fielding was born in Lewis County WV February 14, 1857 and died May 18, 1911. Fielding had two children from a previous marriage; Lela, born November 8, 1884 and died in October 1981. She married John Wimer. Fielding’s son Roscoe was born September 4, 1888 and died in August 1965 in David City, NE.

Rosa moved to Titusville Florida, where she married Henry Benecke in

December 1915. Henry was born in Germany about 1860 and died in

Florida in 1930.

Luther Jamison Kuhl, a son of Christian and Emsey Ellen (Heater) Kuhl, was born in Calhoun County WV May 12, 1874 and died in Braxton County WV June 3, 1947. He married Ida Jane Goldsmith in Gilmer County WV December 10, 1903.
