1.JOHN WILLIAM HOLT

 

    John W. Holt was born on Hog Island, Surrey County VA in 1769 and

died in Springfield, PA November 10, 1853.  He married Susanna Coburn

in Springfield PA March 6, 1797.  Susanna was born in Monongalia

County VA September 23, 1776 and died in Springfield, PA and died

September 17, 1822 in Springfield, PA.

    The land of John Holt was originally conveyed to William Hill, May

8, 1786, in a deed signed by Benjamin Franklin, President of the

commonwealth of PA, and John Lakins, Squire Surveyor General.  The deed

called for 300 acres of land including an improvement on the east side

of Cheat River, adjoining lands of Samuel Ruble, John Petty, John and

William Lanham, John Selser and line of Spring Hill Township.  For this,

Mr. Hill was to pay at the rate of ten pounds per hundred acres.  The

original of this deed was filed in the Surveyor general's Office.

John Holt was a shoemaker by trade and was a strict Methodist.

    James Coburn Holt, a son of John William and Susanna (Coburn) Holt,

was born in PA December 6, 1799 and died in WV. His spouse is unknown.

    Jonathan Holt, a son Children of John William and Susanna (Coburn)

Holt, was born in PA November 19, 1800. He married Eve Mealey.  Eve, a

daughter of John and Mary (Campbell) Mealey, was born in VA about 1815.

    Louise Holt, a daughter of John W. and Susanna (Coburn) Holt, was

born in Fayette County PA May 29, 1803. She married Andrew Dunlop.

Andresw was born in PA about 1800.

7.MATTHEW HOLT     1.JOHN WILLIAM HOLT

 

    Matthew Holt, a son of John William and Susanna (Coburn) Holt, was

born in Fayette County PA February 18, 1807.  He married Abigail Collins

Bennett.  Abigail, a daughter of William and Rebecca (McCally)

Bennett, was born in Harrison County VA July 3, 1812.  Matthew died

before 1870.  The 1870 and 1880 Gilmer County WV census lists Abigail as a head of a household.

8.JOHN FLETCHER WESLEY HOLT     1.JOHN WILLIAM HOLT

 

    John Fletcher Wesley Holt, a son of John William and Susanna

(Coburn) Holt, was born in Harrison County VA February 18, 1809 and died

in Gilmer County WV December 4, 1882.  His first wife was Rebecca

Bennett.  Rebecca, a daughter of William and Rebecca (McCally) Bennett

was born in Harrison County VA (WV) September 20, 1810 and apparently

died about 1849.

   John married Elizabeth McKissic in Gilmer County VA August 13 1850.  Elizabeth, a daughter of Susan (McCally) McKisic, was in Lewis County VA (WV) about 1821.

The 1870 Gilmer County WV census lists John as Sheriff of the county.

30.WILLIAM BENNETT HOLT    8.JOHN FLETCHER WESLEY HOLT     1.JOHN

WILLIAM HOLT

 

    William Bennett Holt, a son of John Fletcher Wesley and Rebecca

(Bennett) Holt, was born in Lewis County VA October 17, 1842 and died

March 17, 1904. He married Martha Olivia Hyman in Ritchie County WV

October 17,  1866. Martha, a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Webb)

Hyman, was born February 20, 1845 in Richie County, VA (now WV), and

died September 27, 1915 in Goshen, WV. He was a member of Fairview M. E.

Church for 14 years and died as he lived, a christian.  Most of his

family belonged to the Methodist Church.

    He enlisted in the Civil War at Phillipi, VA (WV) and was assigned

to Company C, 10th W.Va. Volunteer Infantry on November 1, 1861.  He was

mustered out March 15, 1865 at Wheeling, WV.  His Commanding Officer was

General Philip H. Sheridan. William Bennett Holt was promoted to Captain

on June 10, 1863.  He returned to his home in Gilmer county, now WV, in

March 1865 and married his childhood sweetheart, Martha Oliva Hyman from

Ritchie County, now WV.

They were married in Smithville, WV, where they purchased 422 acres of

land bordered on the North by the South Fork of the Hughes River and the

Ritchie County Road.  They lived on the property until after the birth

of their first child, Alice Estella Holt, who was born October 22, 1868

they then moved to  Monongalia County, WV, where he purchased about 276

acres of land situated in Clinton District, Monongalia County, WV.

William and Martha Holt reared to adulthood 10 children (plus one

miscarriage, one infant son born and died February 28, 1871 and an

infant daughter, Fannie L. Holt, born February 13, 1883 and died of

whooping cough at about 18 months of age in their Ridgedale home.

They are buried in Goshen Methodist Church Cemetary beneath the granite

"HOLT" marker headstone).

    Abraham Lincoln Holt, a son of John Fletcher Wesley and Elizabeth

(McKissic) Holt, was born in Gilmer County Va (WV) June 1, 1861 and

died there March 13, 1924.  He married Cora Edna Shock December 5,

1900.  Cora, a daughter of James Franklin and Delila (Hines) Shock,

was born in Gilmer County WV May 1, 1872 and died June 10, 1934.

Holt, was born October 16, 1877 in Monongalia County, WV, and died

November 16, 1958 in Kenova, Wayne County, WV.  She married Albert

Sidney LaFollette April 19, 1905 in Monongalia County WV Albert, a son

of John and Mary (Rogers) LaFollette, He was born May 04, 1875 in Lehew,

Hampshire County WV, and died December 06, 1961 in Wayne County.

James William and Madora (Taylor) Keith, was born in Gilmer County in

October 1881.

29, 1969 in College Park, Maryland.
