2.JOHN TURTON GOFF     1.THIEL GOFF

 

    John Turton Goff, a son of Thiel and Hannah (Turton) Goff, was

born in MD about 1738 and died in Monongalia County VA (WV) March 9,

1803.  John was living in Randolph County VA (WV) at the beginning of

the Revolution and he and his brothers James, Thomas and Salathiel

enlisted in the 15 VA Regiment of the Continental Line at Romney VA.

    John married Elizabeth Welsh in MD April 20, 1759. Elizabeth, a

daughter of Thomas and Dorcas Welsh, was born April 19, 1759 in St. Mary

County MD and died in Monongalia County VA in 1780.

    John married Modica Carrico about 1781. Modica, a daughter of John

and Monica (Hagan) Carrico was born about 1764 in Bryantown Hundred, MD

and died December 27, 1815 in Monongalia County VA.

     John Turton Goff died while searching for daughter Tamar Goff who

eloped with John Riddle. John Turton Goff was appointed one of the

earliest Justices of the Peace of Monongalia County VA and was Sheriff

in Harrison County WVA from 1800 until his death in 1803.

3.JAMES GOFF     1.THIEL GOFF

 

    James Goff, a son of Thiel and Hannah (Turton) Goff, was born

about 1740.  James was living in Randolph County VA (WV) at the

beginning of the Revolution and he and his brothers John, Thomas and

Salathiel enlisted in the 15 VA Regiment of the Continental Line at

Romney VA.  He married Mary Eunice Johnson.  Mary was a daughter of

Garret and Judith Johnson.  After Mary died, James married Catherine

Carrico.

5.SALATHIEL GOFF     1.THIEL GOFF

 

    Salathiel Goff, a son of Thiel and Hannah (Turton) Goff, was born

in MD about 1748 and died at St. George, Tucker (then Randolph) County

VA (WV) June 21 OR June 28, 1791. He was buried beneath a large hickory

tree on the farm of the later W.E. Cupp, St. George, Tucker County WV.   

 

 He enlisted in the 15th VA Regiment of the Continental Line in the

Revolution and served as Captain of VA Militia for six months in 1781,

1782 and 1783.  He married Elizabeth Sheredine Gray in Calvert County MD

April 26, 1778. Elizabeth, a daughter of John and Ann "Nancy" (Broome)

Gray, was born in 1753 and died in Meigs County OH May 2, 1839.

    The following is excerpted from Stella Cotrill's "Descendants of

Thomas Jonas Goff Sr."

In summer of 1784,notice was served for on the claimants for land grants

by the State Commissioners, and said the hearing would be near

Clarksburg, to deliver the land grants.

The following is a copy of one of the land grants executed to Salathiel

Goff, then a County Court Commissioner of Harrison County VA,newly

formed from Ohio and Ohio and Monongalia counties and thereby a "Justice

of The Peace" of the Commonwealth.

"Know Ye that by virtue of a certificate in the right of settlement

given by the commissioners for adjusting the title to unpatented lands

in the counties of Nonongalia, Yohogania and the Ohio, and in

consideration of the ancient composition of  one pound, five shillings,

paid by Salathiel Goff into the Treasury of the Commonwealth unto the

said Salathiel Goff a certain tract  or parcel of land, containing two

hundred fifty acres of survey bearing the date the 13th of

June,1781,lying and being in the county of Monongalia on Cheat River,

nearly opposite the Horse Bottom, including his settlement made thereon

in the year 1776 and is bounded by as follows..."

After receiving their own and neighbors grants, they were returning

Jubilantly in the Cheat settlements, riding horseback, singe file along

the Woodland trail. A short distance below what is now the town of

Phillippi, where the path followed the narrows between the river and the

hills, the horsemen in front, John Minear, suddenly encountered a string

with a "shot-pouch" attached, strung across the road and he halted

exclaiming, "Indians". He had no sooner gasped the warning than he fell

from his horse pierced by a bullet. Frederick Cooper and Daniel Cameron

instantly met like fates. John Miller succeeded in getting away and

getting to Clarksburg to warn them. Andrew Miller managed to also escape

and made it  to the Tygarts settlements.

Salathiel Goff tried to swim the river but could not get across, so he

threw his coat into the river when he saw a deep hole or cavern and hid

in the den made by the otters. The Indians followed the coat downstream

and he managed to leave the hole, get on his horse and escape to warn

St. George's garrison.

The Indians retreated and were pursued by Colonel Lowther's assembled

scouts. Their camp was located and attack was deterred until daybreak,

when Lowther and his men made a surprise attack. Many Indians were

killed and they headed for their towns beyond the Ohio and the loot was

retaken by his troops.  Unhappily one white settler was killed.

    After Salathiel died, Elizabeth married William Howell. William

was born in 1748 and died in Meigs County March 28, 1842.

    James C. Goff, a son of John Turton and Elizabeth (Welsh) Goff, was

born July 21, 1762 in MD and died July 27, 1857 in Athens, OH. He

married Susanna Richardson May 19, 1787 in Harrison County VA. He

married Elizabeth Barnhouse bout 1793. He married Elizabeth Howell in

Randolph County VA November 17, 1798.

    Marsha Anna Goff, a daughter of John Turton and Elizabeth (Welsh)

Goff, was born June 14, 1770 and died in 1800 in Monongalia County VA.

She married James Hall/Hull. She married Johann Yost Heck about 1791. 

Johann, a son of Johann Jacob and Judith (Albright) Heck, was born in

Berks County PA May 10, 1754 and died in Monongalia County VA July 20,

1825.

Johann's second wife was Susan "Betsey" Exline. Susan was born in 1770.

    Johann's monument reads:

"Erected in Memory of Johann Yost Heck, May 10, 1754-July 20, 1825.

Service Record in Revolutionary War-Enlisted May 1776, Private,

Captain Henry Crist, Colonel Stewart 13 th Pennsylvania.  Rifleman.

was born February 25 or June 14, 1770 in MD and died January 2, 1854 in

Delaware, IN. He married Anna Howell July 2, 1794 in Randolph County VA.

Anna, a daughter of William and Eleanor (Gilmore) Howell, was born about

1777 in VA and died before May 19, 1800. John married Sabina K. Halley

May 19, 1800 in Bedford County VA.

    Alexander "Sauncey" Goff, a son of John Turton and Elizabeth (Welsh)

Goff, was born in Randolph County VA October 16, 1773 and died May 21,

1857 in Ritchie County VA. He is buried on the Strother Goff farm. He

married Elizabeth Riddle in Randolph County April 20, 1799. Elizabeth, a

daughter of James and Dorcas Ann (Welch) Riddle, was born April 18, 1779

in Spotsylvania County VA and died November 12, 1859 in Randolph County

VA. She is buried on the Strother Goff farm.

    They lived first in Randolph County VA until after the War of 1812.

After 1850 they moved to Ritchie County VA and lived out their lives

near Burnt House, Ritchie County WV.

14.TAMAR GOFF    2.JOHN TURTON GOFF     1.THIEL GOFF

 

    Tamar Goff, a daughter of John Turton and Modica (Carrico) Goff, was

born in  Allegheny County MD August 4, 1782 and died in Roane County

December 15, 1823. She married John Clinton Riddle in Randolph County VA

September 28, 1802. John, a son of James and Dorcas Ann (Welch) Riddle,

was born in Georgetown, MD June 30, 1778 and died in Roane County VA

(WV) in 1843.   John married Elizabeth Holbert May 16, 1824. His third

wife was Hannah Drake.

    John served in the War of 1812. He was the first settler in Grass

Run in Ritchie County VA, arriving in 1831. Later, he moved to Lewis

County WVA and finally to Roane County WV, where he is buried with his

last wife Hannah Drake.

    In spring of 1858,Jacob B. Smith was appointed administrator of the

John Riddle estate. Sale of his property was held on May 1,1858.

    His will is recorded in Will Book Number 1, page 2 in the Roane

County Courthouse at Spencer, WV.

15.LUDA GOFF     2.JOHN TURTON GOFF     1.THIEL GOFF

 

    Luda Goff, a daughter of John Turton and Modica (Carrico) Goff,

was born in 1784 and died in Gilmer County VA (WV) in October 1835.

She married Jacob Springston Jr. in April 1807 in Randolph County VA.

Jacob, a son of Jacob Sr. and Elizabeth (Lambert) Springston, was born

in Randolph County August 4, 1772 and died in Lewis County VA December

15, 1841.  Jacob was a veteran of the War of 1812 and one of the

earliest settlers in western Virginia.  He served Randolph County VA

(WV) as a magistrate for ten years before moving to Lewis County VA (WV)

in 1827. They are buried in Woodford Cemetery in Gilmer County WV.

    Hiram Goff, a son of Salathiel and Elizabeth Sheredine (Gray)

Goff, was born in Allegheny County MD in 1780 and died in Gilmer County

VA (WV) July 15, 1820.  He married Margaret Rush in 1805. Margaret was

born about 1785 and died in Gilmer County VA June 22, 1848.

    Hiram was a Major in the Randolph County 5th Regiment VA Militia. He

received his commission in 1807 and resigned in 1816,having been

appointed "Justice of the Peace" and a member of Randolph County Court,

in which he served until 1820,when he remarried in Gilmer County.

was born in Allegheny County MD August 4, 1782 and died in Gilmer

County in May 1861.

They moved to Grayson TX. Abraham contracted malaria there and went back

to Gilmer County WV, where he died.
