1.CHRISTOPH ADAM GERWIK

Christoph Adam Gerwik was born in Germany and was a farmer and

weaver in Neusatz, Schwarzwald, Wurttemberg. (now a part of Germany.)

He married Regina Jacobina Ruffen.

There is no proof, but traditional family history states that there

were six sons, all of whom arrived at Baltimore during the 1830's.

These brothers were allegedly Georg, Mathias, William John, Jacob and

Christian. The story states that Christian went to Illinois, Georg and

Matthias to Virginia and Jacob, John and William remained Maryland.

There is no proof that Mathias and Georg were brothers, but on the

strength of the traditional history, they will appear as brothers in

this paper.

Note that the family name was originally spelled Gerwik in Germany.

In various census and other records, the spelling "Garwig", "Garwick"

and "Garvick" are encountered.

Georg Friederich Gerwig, a son of Christoph Adam and Regina Jacobina

(Ruffen) Gerwik, was born at Neusatz in the Schwarzwald District,

Kingdom of Wurttemberg, April 7, 1798 and died in Braxton County, WV

October 23, 1870. (Wurttenberg became part of the German empire in

1871.)

Georg married Juliana Elizabeth Konig about 1825. Elizabeth, a

daughter of Christian Friederich and Elizabeth (Konig) Konig, was born

in Dobel, Schwarzwald District in 1792 and died in Braxton County, WV

October 9, 1875.

Georg was a hostler, a handler and trainer of horses, in Neusatz

until about 1833, when he and Elizabeth and three sons emigrated to

Catonsville, MD. In September 1840 they moved to Braxton County, VA

(WV) and became part of the German settlement in the area of present day

Exchange and Chapel, WV.

4.MATHIAS GERWIG 1.CHRISTOPH ADAM GERWIK

Mathias Gerwig was born September 30, 1803 and died in Braxton

County, VA (WV) August 4, 1852. Although there is no proof, he is

believed to have been a son of Christoph Adam and Regina Jacobina

(Ruffen) Gerwik. He married Elizabeth C. Uldrich about 1828. Elizabeth

was born May 4, 1808 and died in Braxton County June 4, 1878.

In September 1840, Mathias and his family settled in Braxton County,

VA (WV).

Christian Friederich Gerwig, a son of Georg Friederich and Juliana

Elizabeth (Konig) Gerwig, was born in Germany October 10, 1826 and died

in Braxton County, WV November 28, 1903.

Christian came with his family to Catonsville, Md in 1833 and moved

with the to Braxton County, VA (WV) in 1840. He married Mary Rocena

Engel in Braxton County in 1855. Mary, a daughter of Daniel and Anna

Maria (Weltz) Engel, was born in MD March 18, 1837 and died in Braxton

County, WV November 3, 1911.

George Friderich "Fred" Gerwig, a son of Georg Friederich and

Juliana Elizabeth (Konig) Gerwig, was born in Germany November 30, 1827

and died in Braxton County, WV September 8, 1911. He emigrated to

Catonsville, MD in 1833 with his family and came to the German

Seettlement in Braxton County, VA (WV) with them in 1840. He married

Christena Brady in Braxton County in 1852. Christena, a daughter of John

and Elizabeth Brady, was born in VA March 30, 1833 and died in Braxton

County April 16, 1884.

Sometime between 1855 and 1860, the family moved to Kansas to

homestead. They encountered hot dry weather and returned to the

German settlement in Braxton County.

Christena died in 1884 and "Fred" married Clementina Rommetsch in

1885. Clementina, a daughter of Jacob and Louisa Christina (Smith)

Rommetsch, was born in Baltimore, MD March 10, 1850 and died February 7,

1937 in Braxton County.

ADAM GERWIK

Mathias Gerwig, a son of Georg Friederich and Juliana Elizabeth

(Konig) Gerwig, was born in Germany July 3, 1832 and died January 4,

1920. He emigrated to Catonsville, MD with his family in 1833 and came

to the German settlement in BRaxton County, VA (WV). with them in 1840.

He married Sarah Ellen Lloyd July 31, 1857. Sarah, a daughter of Isaac

Hyer and Catherine Mary (McPherson) Lloyd, was born in Braxton County,

VA (WV) February 27, 1839 and died there January 14, 1878.

After Sarah Gerwig's death Matthias married Susan E. Whytsell

November 24, 1878. Susan, a daughter of Levi and Margaret (Sipes)

Whytsell, was born in Rockingham County, VA January 30, 1842 and died

before 1916. Matthias married Laura Mapes at St. Cloud, FL January 15,

1916.

Mathias was a superb horseman and served in the Civil War in General

Phillip Sheridan"s escort. He was in 91 engagements during that war.

Mathias served as a post master of German, WV (now Chapel). Marvin G.

Miller has told Mattias' story in verse.

The evening breeze was blowing

And the Church was overflowing

When the preacher preached the evils of strong drink.

And he said with vim and vigor

That no sin was any bigger,

And that all the liquor should be thrown down the sink.

We know when Germans gather,

Makes no difference what the weather,

They like to take a drink their throats to cool.

Mathias Gerwig, true to breeding,

To this evil gave no heeding,

So I guess he's no exception to the rule.

With him the preacher pleaded

That hard cider wasn't needed

Til at last he told them, "I'll get rid of mine.

And his sons, although they'd rue it,

Asked their father how they'd do it,

And he answered, "as we use it stein by stein."

Now Mathias was no charmer,

'Tho he was a wealthy farmer,

And a dandy judge of horseflesh, so they say,

But the neighbors cried "disaster"

When he became post master

Of the little town of Chapel by the way.

The good folk came together

And it wasn't about the weather.

They talked of ousting Gerwig from his post.

And they loud and long debated,

Although most of them had stated

That the service wasn't that of which to boast.

For a lack of something better,

They sat down and wrote a letter,

And to the high officials it was sent.

When Mathias saw the letter,

He went them one much better,

And wrote a message to the President.

Two weeks had scarce gone by us

When a letter for Mathias

Came to bring him happy news and lots of cheer.

And the 'General Postmaster'

Could have traveled none the faster

To inform him of his job he need not fear.

Still the neighbors argued strongly

That they all were treated wrongly

And they penned more letters to those in command.

Till Mathias, nervous hearted,

Grabbed his old black hat and started

Out to see the leader of this favored land.

When he reached his destination

To the President of the Nation

He was told McKinley he couldn't meet

But the President at last

Saw Mathias as he passed,

And bid him come in and have a seat.

He reassured Mathias

That the people there were biased,

Then they fell to reminiscing 'bout the past.

For they had oft fought in battle,

Heard the swords and muskets rattle,

And they'd shared a billet to the very last.

When General Sheridan was departed

From his men when fighting started,

Mathias was just one of twenty by his side,

And as I've stated in this discourse,

Mathias always loved a fast horse,

And he'd picked a mount with care on which to ride.

When Sheridan's men were routed,

And their courage they had doubted,

He rode for twenty miles to reach their side.

Mathias was the least expected,

And the only one to match the General stride for stride.

When Mathias at last departed,

And for his home had started,

In sooth, his worries were as light as air.

And for years folks kept wondering,

How he got by with such blundering,

But Mathias kept his post and didn't care.

County, VA (WV) in 1840. She married Charles Bradford Moyers in Braxton

County December 15, 1858.

Charles, a son of Philip and Susan Moyers, was born in VA January

10, 1835 and died in Braxton County March 23, 1923. Charles and Caroline

lived all their lives on Cedar Creek in Braxton County.

Surviving are her husband of 63 years Phillip Gerwig, and three children, Patricia Sue Gerwig Rosner of Germantown Maryland, Thomas Richard (wife Jamie) Gerwig of Grantsville, and Janey Ellen Gerwig Hudkins (husband Roger) of Mineral Wells WV; her sister Pauline Wilson of Cowen WV; ten grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by sisters, Floda White, Leo Fowler, Vernie Stewart, Nellie Hamric Davis, Edna Meadows, Rosalie White; brothers, Glennard Hart, Hubert Hart, Darius Hart, Edward Hart, Charles Hart, and Herbert Hart.

Services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, May 15th at Stump Funeral Home in Grantsville. Burial will be in the Hart Cemetery at Clem, Braxton County, WV.
