1.NICHOLAS LARSSON FRIEND

 

    Nicholas Larsson Friend was born about 1619 and died in Upland

County, later Chester County, PA in 1687.  His will was dated December

20, 1686 and was recorded in Philadelphia County Book A, Page 145.  He

married Anna Andersdotter in New Sweden, PA in August 1656. Anna, a

daughter of Anders Anderson and Christina (Goolbrandt) Andersdotter, was

born about 1638 and died in Chester, PA in 1724.

    Allegedly, Nicholas Larsson, originally called Nils Larsson,

arrived in New Sweden aboard the ship SWAN in 1848.  By 1668, he had

adopted the surname Frande and in that year he was granted a permit

by the Jersey governor to buy west Jersey lands from the Indians.

Records refer to Nils Larsson Friend, Nils Larsson, Neals Larsson

and Neals Lawson.   There is some controversy over whether this is

one person or if there were two or more people with similar names

who had wives name Anna. Some records say Nicholas Friend was born

in Dorsetshire, England.

    On June 15, 1686, "Neiles Lawrson Friend" was granted 800 acres

called "Oak Hill" on the east side of Red Clay Creek in Chester

County PA.

    A 1689 deed records Anna as "Anne friend widow and relcit of

Neal Lawsa als ffriend Late of Chester ...".  In other words, Anne

Friend, widow of Neals Larson, alias Friend, who had lived in

Chester County.

2.BRIGITTA FRIEND     1.NICHOLAS LARSSON FRIEND

 

    Brigitta or Brita Friend, a daughter of Nicholas Larsson and

Anna (Andersdotter) Friend, was born in PA about 1657.  She married

John Cox.  The couple lived in Psaayunk (South Philadelphia) PA.

3.ANDREW FRIEND     1.NICHOLAS LARSSON FRIEND

 

    Andrew (Anders) Friend, a son of Nicholas Larsson and Anna

(Andersdotter) Friend, was born in PA about 1659 and died after

1750.  He married Isabela Helm in Chester County PA in 1689.

Isabela, a daughter of Israel Helm, was born about 1660 and died in

New Castle County DE in 1700.  He was listed as tydable in Upland

(Chester) PA court in 1677.  Listed in New Sweden, PA in 1693 as

"Anders Frende" with 4  persons in Household.  In 1724, he deeded

land in Chester, PA to Sister Susanna and husband.

4.ANNA CATHERINE FRIEND     1.NICHOLAS LARSSON FRIEND

 

    Anna Catherine "Crey" Friend, a daughter of Nicholas Larsson and

Anna Friend, was born about 1661 and died in Gloucester, NJ during a

smallpox epidemic April 19, 1721.  She married Olof Dalbo.  Olof, a

son of Larsson and Elizabeth Dalbo, was born about 1655 and died in

Gloucester County NJ in 1712.  Olof was also known as Olle, Wolly

and William Dalbo.

    Maria Friend, a daughter of Nicholas Larsson and Anna

(Andersdotter) Friend, was born about 1663.  She married Gabriel

Cox.  Gabriel inherited "Peter Cock's Island" in the Schuylkill

River.  He sold the island to John Fisher and Samuel Carpenter and

it was variously known as "Fishers Island" and "Carpenters Island".

    Johannes Friend, a son of Nicholas Larsson and Anna

(Andersdotter) Friend, was born about 1666 and died in Upper Penns

Neck, Salem County NJ about 1737.  He married Anna Coleman about

1695.  Anna was a  daughter of Hendrick Coleman.  Johannes was a tax

collector and justice.

11.SARAH FRIEND    1.NICHOLAS LARSSON FRIEND

 

    Sarah Friend, a daughter of Nicholas Larsson and Anna

(Andersdotter) Friend, was born in Delaware County PA between 1672

and 1682.  She married Amos Nichols.  Amos was a silversmith.

17.ISRAEL FRIEND     3.ANDREW FRIEND     1.NICHOLAS LARSSON FRIEND

 

    Israel Friend, a son of Andrew and Isabela (Helm) Friend, was

born in Delaware County PA before 1693 and died near Harper's Ferry

VA in 1753.  His will was dated August 12, 1749 and names his

children and his brother Charles.  The will was probated in

Frederick County MD June 5, 1753.  His will is also recorded in

Augusta County VA Will book 2, page 125.  He married Sarah Bokavar.

Sarah married John Valentine House after Israel died.  Sarah died in

Augusta County about 1764.

    Governor Calvert of MD commissioned Israel Friend as an Indian

trader and ambassador to the Shawnee Indians on the Potomac River.

    The following deed is recorded in the Fairfax VA museum and is

made out to Israel Friend.

 

         Whereas it be known to all manner of persons to whom it May

    concern that, we Cunnawchala, Taw Wenaw, Capt. Slvilite, Toile

    Hangee, Shoe Hays, Calakahahatt being Kings and Rulers of the

    five nations, for natural love and affection we bear to out

    brother Israel Friend.

         We give unto him and heirs, executors, administrators and

    assigns a certain piece of land lying between the Potowmack

    River beginning at the mouth of Aucictum Creek at Cox Elders,

    marked with three notches on every side and run up said river

    two hundred shoots as far as an arrow can be flung out of a bow

    and to be one hundred shoots right back from the river so

    containing its square until it intersects with the said creek

    again with aforesaid land against the mouth of the creek which

    said land we said Indians and our heirs do warrant and forever

    defend unto the said Israel Friend, his heirs, executors,

    administrators, and assigns forever with all the appurtenances

    thereunto belonging as fishing, fowling, hawking, hunting, and

    all other privileges thereunto belonging with paying unto some

    of us two ears of Indian corn for every year if demanded as

    witness our hands and seals this tenth day of January one

    thousand seven hundred and twenty seven.

    The deed was enrolled November 27, 1730. This land was on the

Potomac River in Price George's County MD and later became the Civil

War battlefield Antietam.

 

    By 1734, Israel had built a mill in Frederick County MD. By

1748, the mill was owned by Christian Orndorff.

     Israel was an iron worker and had a smelting furnace on

Antietam Creek in MD.  In 1734, he was mining iron ore on a tract of

land bordering the Potomac River in present day Jefferson County WV.

It is not known whether he had a furnace on this site or whether he

took the ore to Antietam Creek for smelting.  Israel cast a great

number of bells, the finest on the market and each bore his

initials.

    He was on the rent rolls of Frederick County VA for 1746. He owned

an estate called "Keep Trust" on the VA side of the Potomac River nears

Harper's Ferry VA.

    Rebecca Friend, a daughter of Andrew and Isabela (Helm) Friend,

was born about 1698 and died in Gloucester County NJ September 17,

1783.  She married Lawrence "Lars" Stang in 1717.  Lars was a son of

John Andersson Sprang.

married Carthery (Gertrude) ? --------. Owned a tract of land in MD

called "Swede's Delight" and "Hard Bargain."

    Anna "Nanne" Friend, a daughter of Johannes and Anna (Coleman)

Friend, was born about 1702.  She married Anders Hendrickson

February 13, 1724.

    Jonas Friend, a son of Israel and Sarah Friend, was born about

1725 and died November 15, 1807. (Sutton's "History of Braxton County

and Central WV" lists Jonas as "Joseph.) He married Sarah Skidmore in

1754. Sarah, a daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Caldwell) Skidmore, was

born about 1732 and died in Randolph County VA (WV) in 1808.

    Jonas served as a corporal in the French and Indian War under

Captain in Abraham Smith.  He bought 44 acres of land in Pendleton

County

VA from the heirs of Robert Green May 29, 1761.  He was appointed

constable in Pendleton County November 17, 1767.

    By 1772, Jonas had moved to the Tygart River Valley in what was

to become Randolph County VA.  Jonas Friend, his son Joseph, his

father in law Edward Skidmore and three partners built Friend's

Fort near Elkins in 1772 for protection against the Indians.

    Jonas was appointed a Gentleman Justice for Augusta County VA

February 4, 1775.  He served in that capacity until December 19,

1781 when he was retired because he no longer lived in the county.

    Jacob Friend, a son of Israel and Sarah Friend, was born in

Rockingham County VA about 1731 and died in Pendleton County VA in 1819.

His will is dated December 10, 1817 and was probated in Pendleton County

February 2, 1819.  He married Elizabeth Skidmore about 1754.  Elizabeth,

a daughter of Joseph and Agnes (Caldwell) Skidmore, was born in 1734 and

died in Pendleton County October 11, 1811.

    Jacob and Elizabeth settled in Pendleton County before the American

Revolution. Jacob was in the Pendleton County militia on September 15,

1794 under Captain Patterson. He served in the War of 1812.

    Joseph Friend, a son of Jonas and Sarah (Skidmore) Friend, was

born in Pendleton County VA 1755 and died in Webster County VA (WV) in

1827.  He married Elizabeth Davisson in Harrison County Va (WV) November

16, 1786. Elizabeth died about 1790.

    Joseph served as an Indian fighter in the American Revolution.

He raised a company of Volunteers who were a part of Colonel

Zacquill Morgan's regiment.  He served with General St. Clair in

1791 and was present at the Battle of Fallen Timbers near Toledo, OH

in August 1794.

    By 1891, Joseph had moved with his daughter and son in law to

Nicholas County VA at the site of present day Webster Springs and

was engaged in salt making in partnership with James Dyer.

of William and Lydia (Steele) Currence, was born in Bucks County PA

June 19, 1757 and died at Huttonsville VA July 31, 1849.

    Sarah Friend, a daughter of Jonas and Sarah (Skidmore) Friend,

was born in Frederick County VA in 1759 and died in Noble County

Ohio October 20, 1839.  She married William Wilson Jr. August 19,

1779.  William, a son of William and Elizabeth (Blackburn) Wilson,

was born in Shenandoah County VA February 8, 1754 and died in Noble

County January 1, 1851.

    The family live in Randolph County VA until 1831, when they

moved to Noble County Ohio.

    Thomas Friend, a son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Skidmore) Friend,

was born in Pendleton County VA about 1764 and died in Braxton County VA

in 1814. A deed made January 10, 1822 in Braxton County VA (WV) granted

his land to his heirs at law. He married Mary ------. Mary was born in

VA in 1784 and died in Braxton County after 1870.

Braxton County February 28, 1856. He moved from Pendleton County to

Greenup County KY, where he married Eliza Jane Rugless December 15,

1822.  Eliza, a daughter of James and Elizabeth (Harding) Rugless,

was born in Greenup County Kentucky December 4, 1798. The family

moved from KY to Braxton County VA (WV), where Jonathan died February

28, 1856.

    Andrew Pendleton Friend, a son of Jacob and Elizabeth (Skidmore)

Friend, was born in 1780 and died in Braxton County WV May 16, 1865.

He married Elizabeth Harris.  Elizabeth was born in VA about 1783

and died May 10, 1879.

    Another source reports that Andrew married Elizabeth Frame, a

daughter of Thomas Frame.

    Andrew settled in present day Braxton County Wv about 1800 and built

the first mill there. It was later known as Beall's Mill.

    Andrew served in the War of 1812.

Braxton County March 2, 1912. She married Silas Innard Carr in Braxton

County December 24, 1852. Silas, a son of James and Rebecca Martin

(Boggs) Carr, was born in Nicholas County VA (WV) March 23, 1831 and

died in Braxton County WV April 27, 1908.

    Silas served the Union in the Civil War. He enlisted in Co F 10th

W.Va. Volunteer Infantry at Sutton, Braxton County VA May 3, 1862 and

was discharged June 26, 1865.

     They are buried in Mt. Moriah Baptist Cemetery in Fayette County, PA. Sampson Friend's occupation was a Stone Mason. They owned a stone Quarry south of Smithfield in an area known as "Outcrop".

was born January 4, 1924 and died in Cuyahoga County OH January 14,

1998.
