1.THOMAS ALOYSIUS EDWARDS

 

    Thomas Aloysius Edwards was born in 1834 at Blooming Rose Farm, near

Oakland in present day Garrett county MD and died in Lewis County WV

January 4, 1890. In 1855, he moved to Wheeling, VA and represented Ohio

County VA in the VA legislature.

    Thomas married Mary Olivia Hoffman in Lewis County WV April 24,

1866. Mary, a daughter of Weeden and Matilda (Newton) Hoffman, was born

in Lewis County February 16, 1840 and died there in 1933.

    Mary was an 1858 graduate of Mount de Chantal Academy at Wheeling,

VA. During the Civil  War, Mary Olivia and others from Weston, were

taken prisoners by the Union Army because of their sympathies with the

Confederate cause. In May 1863 they were sent to Camp Chase, which was

located near Columbus, OH. After several months at Camp Chase, she was

released and returned to Weston.

5.WALTER ALOYSIUS EDWARDS   1.THOMAS ALOYSIUS EDWARDS

 

    Walter Aloysius Edwards, a son of Thomas Aloysius and Mary Olivia

(Hoffman) Edwards, was born in Lewis County WV October 13, 1872 and died

in 1956. He married Mary Julia Whelen in 1895. Mary "Mame", a daughter

of Andrew Francis and Mary (McGill) Whelan, was born in 1871 and died in

1959.

    Walter accepted a position with the National Exchange Bank in

Weston, where he served as a director. In 1907, he effected the

organization of the Bank of Weston and was the cashier of that

institution.

    He was also a director of the Weston Electric Light, Power and Water

Company and also served as treasurer of Sprigg Lumber Company. Addition-

ally, Walter was one of the owners of Edwards and Edwards Insurance.

    After the Depression had forced the Bank of Weston to close its

doors, Walter took employment with the WV State Road Commission where he

remained until his retirement.

EDWARDS

 

    Gene Hoffman Edwards, a son of Walter Aloysius and Mary Julia

(Whelen) Edwards, was born in Lewis County WV March 15, 1904 and died

there December 22, 1981. He married Sarah Brewster in Latrobe, PA

September 24 1932. Sarah, a daughter of James Henry and Ann (Kitson)

Brewster, was born in Lewis County WV March 28, 1908 and died in June

1997.

    Sarah enrolled in the Greenbrier College for Women in Lewisburg, WV

in 1925. Upon graduation, she attended William and Mary College in

Williamsburg, VA. She later returned to Greenbrier College to as

Assistant to the Dean of Women.

    Gene attended Notre Dame, he played both football and basketball

and was a member of the 1924 National Championship football team that

beat Stanford in the Rose Bowl.

    In 1926, he was the quarterback and co-captain of the Fighting Irish

football team.

    Gene often told the story of the game in the 1926 season when Knute

Rockne did not accompany the team to Carnegie Tech at Pittsburgh, Pa and

Notre Dame lost 19-0. It was their only loss of the season.

    Upon graduation from Notre Dame, he returned to Weston and accepted

a position with the Bank of Weston.

    Some years later, he became assistant football and basketball coach

at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA. While he was coaching at St.

Vincent, the professional football league was in its infancy, and Art

Rooney, owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers, approached Gene about coaching

the Steelers. At that time, he was making more money and had more job

security at St. Vincent than Mr. Rooney was able to offer.

   In 1956, Gene and Sarah returned to Weston where he accepted a

position with the Citizens Bank of Weston and, in 1968, was named the

Chairman of the Board of Directors.

    He was awarded one last honor in athletics when, in 1970, he was

inducted into the West Virginia Sports Hall of Fame.

    Anne Edwards, a daughter of Gene Hoffman and Sarah (Brewster)

Edwards, was born July 22, 1933. She married Edward L. Byrdy of

Pittsfield, MA.

    Gene Hoffman Edwards Jr., a son of Gene Hoffman and Sarah (Brewster)

Edwards, was born in Latrobe PA march 6, 1937. He married Judy Boros in

Arlington Va in December 1958.
