Samuel DeWees, a son of John and Mary (Updegrove) Dewees, was born

in 1785 in Mispillion, Kent County, DE and died after 1860 in Jackson

County VA (WV). He married Edith Battin July 18, 1809 in Jefferson

County, OH. Edith, a daughter of Samuel and Mary (Grave) Battin, was

born in 1787 in Chester County, PA and died before April 04, 1851 in

Jackson County VA.

Samuel married Ann Nancy Porter March 17, 1853 in Jackson County.

Ann, a daughter of Nicholas and Elizabeth (Goodlin) Porter, was born

in 1825 in Ohio, and died about 1857 in Jackson County.

Samuel (at age 73) appeared before the justice of the peace in

Jackson County VA on July 2, 1856, to declare that he was the private,

Samuel Dewees, who enlisted into Captain Gibsons Company of Virginia

militia on February 12, 1815. The militia was under the command of

Colonel Woods. He states that he was drafted into this company in

Monongahela, in the State of Virginia for a term of six months. He was

in active service with this company until mustering out at Moorefield,

Hardy County, on March 3, 1815 due to the declaration of peace.

This Declaration was made in reference to the Bounty land act of 1855.

He was represented by the attorney, Andrew Waugh of Ripley, Jackson

County, Va.

born March 17, 1825 in Mason County VA, and died March 25, 1900 in

Marshfield, Athens County, OH. He married Elizabeth Casto May 09, 1844

in Jackson County VA. Elizabeth, a daughter of William and Susanna

(Rollins) Casto, was born in 1817 in Mason County VA and died in 1871 in

Jackson County, WV. Alfred married Sarah Williams September 5, 1872 in

Athens County.

Alfred served the Union in the Civil War in Co K, 11th W.Va. Volunteer

Infantry. He enlisted August 14, 1862, at Cottageville, VA. And was

mustered at Ravenswood, Jackson County VA August 31, 1862. He was

wounded May 09, 1864, at the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain

He was at Apr 09, 1865, present at Apppomattox Court House when the

General Lee surrendered April 9, 1865. He was mustered out June 17,

1865.

LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT

Of Alfred E.S. Dewees

of Marshfield Athens County, State of OH

In the name of the Benevolent Father of All

I the said Alfred E.S. Dewees, being of sound and disposing mind and

memory, considering the uncertainty of continuance of life, and desiring

to make such disposition of my worldly estate as I deem best, do make,

publish and declare, this to be my last will and testament; hereby

revoking and annulling any and all former will or wills whatsoever by me

made.

First: I desire all my just debts and funeral expenses to be paid, as

soon as possible after my decease.

Second: I give and bequeath to the Methodist Episcopal Church of

Marshfield Charge Marietta District the following Real Estate in the

village of Marshfield, Athens County, State of OH to - wit. All of Inlot

Number 47 in said village of Marshfield, subject however to the

following conditions to wit the Trustees of said Marshfield Charge shall

within two years after my decease, build a good comfortable house on

said lot for the sole use of a Methodist Episcopal Parsonage. Should

said trustees fail to erect said building within the specified time of

two years after my decease, then this item to be void and of none

effect.

And if failure to erect such building within said two years, I give and

bequeath said In lot Number 47 to the Board of Home Missions of the

Methodist Episcopal Church. It is my will that my wife, Sarah Dewees

shall have full use and control of said Inlot Number 47 until the above

conditions are complied with.

Third: I give, devise and bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah Dewees all

the remaining personal and real estate belonging to my estate at my

decease during her natural life. After her death, to go to the Board of

Church Extension of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

I nominate and appoint my wife Sarah Dewees to be the executor _ of this

will without bond

Benjamin Casto Dewees, a son of Samuel and Edith (Battin) DeWees,

was born July 14, 1827 in Mason County VA (WV) and died June 04, 1907 in

Munday, Wirt County, WV. He married Grace Casto November 5, 1848 in

Jackson County VA. Grace, a daughter of William and Susanna (Rollins)

Casto, was born in 1820 in Lewis County VA and died after1880. Benjamin

married Nancy Ann Hershman January 8, 1857 in Jackson County. Nancy, a

daughter of Christopher and Mary "Polly" Hershman, was born in 1840, and

died in 1875 in Jackson County. Benjamin married Caroline Runner October

9, 1876 in Jackson County. She was born in 1858. He married Marietta

McDade April 19, 1881 in Roane County, WV. She died in 1889. He

married Mary E. (Clark) Peyton February 21, 1898 in Meigs County, OH.

Benjamin served the Union in the Civil War. He in Company K, 11th W.Va.

Volunteer Infantry August 18, 1862 and was mustered as a Private at

Ravenswood, VA August 31, 1862.

Benjamin was wounded at Kernstown, VA while guarding rebel prisoners by

a Confederate sharpshooter. He suffered sunstroke near Halltown, VA July

11, 1864. He was taken to Annapolis, MD, where he was treated. He

returned to his Company in November of 1864.

In the spring of 1865, Ben followed his regiment into action at Hatchers

Run, March 31, 1865, and was slightly wounded in the leg from a minie

ball. At Appomattox, the 11th was rallied to confront the troops of

General Gordon. The flag of Truce was spotted and the fighting ended.

He was mustered out of the regiment in Richmond, VA June 17, 1865 with

his brothers and cousins.

Henry Spencer DeWees, a son of Samuel and Edith (Battin) DeWees,

was born Aug 18, 1834 in Jackson County, VA (WV) and died May 20, 1913

in Meigs County, OH. He married Mary E. Barnhart Apr 06, 1863 in Jackson

County, WV. Mary, a daughter of Alexander and Sarah Barnhart, July 11,

1842 in VA and died Octobert 17, 1923 in Middleport, Meigs County, OH.

Henry enlisted as a private in Company K, 11th W.Va. Volunteer

Infantry at Cottageville, Jackson County VA Augus 14, 1862 and mustered

in at Ravenswood on Aug 31, 1862. Henry was wounded at the Battle of

Fishers Hill, Virginia on September 22, 1864. He was struck by a

cannon blast that wounded him and his cousin, William Jabel Dewees.

Henry returned to the regiment and was present during the Appomattox

Campaign and the surrender of General Robert E. Lee and his Army of

Northern Virginia. On June 17, 1865, he was mustered out of his regiment

in Richmond, VA.

Joshua served the Union in the Civil War. He enlisted in Company K,

11th W.Va. Volunteer Infantry, Augus 14, 1862 at Cottageville,

Jackson County VA and was mustered into service August 31, 1862 in

Ravenswood, Jackson County. He was mustered out of service in Richmond,

Virginia after the war.

20, 1923. He married Ruth A. Parsons April 23, 1861 in Jackson County.

Mary, a daughter of Moses and Mary (DeWees) Parsons, was born November

21, 1840 in Jackson County and died there November 13, 1919.

William served the Union in the Civil War. He enlisted in Co K 11th

W.Va. Volunteer Infantry August 14, 1862 at Cottageville, Jackson county

VA and was mustered as a Private Augsut 31, 1862 at Ravenswood, Jackson

County Va. He was wounded in action September 22, 1864 at the battle of

Fisher's Hill. He was mustered out of the Regiment June 17, 1865 at

Richmond, VA.

DeWees, was born at Normantown, Lewis County VA (WV) March 11, 1821 and

died in Calhoun County WV April 19, 1905.

Daniel married Elizabeth Boggs in Gilmer County Va Febraury 25,

1847. Elizabeth, a daughter of William and Sarah (Stump) Boggs, was born

in Rockbridge County VA about 1815 in Gilmer County after 1870. Daniel

married Sally A. Lamb in Gilmer County April 14, 1879. Sally, a widow,

was born in VA 1824.

Daniel married Zuba Johnson October 9, 1887 in Gilmer County. Zuba

was born in Lewis County VA about 1837.

Daniel married Lucretia Shoals November 25 1891. Lucretia was born

in VA in Janaury 1824 and died December 26, 1904.

Daniel served the Confederacy in the Civl War in Captaim Campbell's

Company of the 19th VA Cavalry.

Daniel was the author of "Recollections and Experiences of a

Liftime", a book privately published in 1904. This book has become a

standard genealogical reference for research in Gilmer, Braxton and

Calhoun counties in WV.

One of the many stories in the folk lore of central WV is the remark

attributed to Daniel DeWees regarding marriage. He said that if he knew

he only had four days left to live, he would spend three days looking

for a wife.

Balas Carr DeWees, a son of Isaac Updegrove and Catherine (Carr)

DeWees, was born in Kanawha VA (WV) August 25,1828 and died

September 16, 1907 in Calhoun County, WV. Balas married Mary Margaret

Connolly in Gilmer County VA (WV) March 6, 1849. Mary, a daughter of

Patrick and Mary (Stallman) Connolly, was born July 26, 1830 in Kanawha

County VA and died April 05, 1915 in Calhoun County, WV.

Balas enlisted for service in the Mexican War at Ripley, Jackson

County VA in April 1847. By July 20, 1847 he had arrived in Mexico,

where he served with the 11th Regiment of New York Infantry. He was

discharged in New York August 18, 1848.

In 1861, Absolom Knotts and Balas organized an army company in

Calhoun County VA (WV). The company went South and in the spring of

1862, was attached to the 19th Regiment of VA Cavalry. That same

year, Balas assumed command of the company, Captain Knotts having been

elected to the Confederate legislature.

Samuel Elza DeWees, a son of David Berry and Hannah (Hartley)

DeWees, was born in Morgan County, OH January 23, 1848 and died in

Wellston, OK February 14, 1932.

He moved to Morgan County IN with his family as a boy. He servedf

the Union in the Civil War in Co I 70th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

After the war, he moved to Emporia, KS, where he married to Eliza

Jane Gray. They moved to Morgan County IN, where they lived until 1889,

when they moved to OK to establish a government trading post. Samuel was

appointed postmaster when the Wellston office was established. Their

youngest son, Orrel, was the first white child born in this vicinity.

In 1901 Mr. Dewees helped to found the town of Lone Wolf in Kiowa

County OK and was also the first postmaster there. He later homesteaded

in Roger Mills County, and then returned to Wellston where he liived out

his life.
