George Connolly, a son of George and Mary (------) [Blimas]

Connolly, was born in Lancaster County VA May 20, 1761 and died in

Lewis County VA (WV) May 10, 1838. He married Sallie Morris in

Richmond, VA November 2, 1789. Sallie, a daughter of William and Mary

Morris, was born in Lancaster County in 1769 and died in Kanawha

County in March 1838.

According to his Revolutionary Pension Claim S16734, he enlisted for

three years in April 1779 at Fredricksburg, VA, under Captain Lovely. He

was marched to Richmond joined the 4th Regiment under Colonel William

Davis. He was wounded in April 1781 at Petersburg VA. The British

captured him and about nineteen others and they were put aboard a

British ship. The ball was removed from his leg by the ship's surgeon,

and he was sent to a New York hospital.

After recovering, he was contained in prison with about three

hundred others. The prisoners were set at iberty, without a discharge,

when General Clinton evacuated the town. George had spent seven months

in the hospital and in prison. He returned to VA and settled in

Richmond, where he served as militia captain for ten years. He applied

for a Revolutionary War Pension in Northumberland County, VA and a

pension of $80.00 per year was granted in August 1834.

On November 2, 1789, he married Sally Morris. The births of five of

George and Sally's are recorded Richmond County VA.

In June 1803, he bought two hundred acres of on Polk Creek in

present day Lewis County WV. The land was located one quarter mile from

present day Weston. He appeared on 1810 Harrison County census with five

sons five daughters. In December 1818, he bought lots in the town of

Fleshersville (now Weston), #14 on Main Street, and Lot #5 on Center

Street (Deed Book A. page 517). In May 1821 ,he bought additional 125

acres on Polk Creek. (Deed Book 255).

In February 1822, George and Sally sold all their land to their son.

Patrick Connolly (Deed Book B, page 282), and they moved to northern

Kanawha (now Calhoun) County, where they appeared in the 1830 Kanawha

County census.

On 8 May 1832, Governor John Floyd of VA granted 140 acres on

the West Fork of the Little Kanawha River to George Connolly. (Lewis

County Deed Book F, page 63). After his wife, Sally Morris

Connolly died , he moved back to Lewis County to live with his daughter.

One source states he died there 10 May 1838.

Ailsey Bently Connolly, a daughter of George and Sallie (Morris)

Connolly, was born in Kanawha County VA in 1803 and died there July

20, 1875. She married Thomas Jarvis in Lewis County VA (WV) December

15, 1822. Thomas , a son of John and Sarah Jarvis, was born in

Harrison County VA about 1804 and died in Kanawha County WV February

18, 1879.

The family moved to what is now Calhoun County and bought

property from Philip Starcher in 1832. Eventually, they owned about a

thousand acres of land. Shortly after the Civil War, they sold their

Calhoun County property and moved to Kanawha County, WV. Their

holdings, near present day Big Chimney, WV were referred to as "The

Jarvis Bottom" in Byrne's Tales of the Elk.

Elizabeth Parsons, was born in Lewis County VA (WV) in July 1823 and

died in Calhoun County WV in 1891.

Paulcer married Nancy Mace October 26, 1856 in Calhoun County

VA (WV), with the ceremony performed by William A. Brannon. Nancy, a

daughter of Henry and Sarah (Coger) Mace, was born in 1831.

was born in 1829 and died August 23, 1902. She married Levi James

Reed. Levi was born in Pendleton County Va (WV) September 3, 1823 and

died in Clay County WV April 30, 1915. Although at least one source

says that his father was George Washington Reed, this claim is

dubious.

Levi served in Company B. 9th W.Va. Infantry in the Civil War.

About 1875, the Levi Reed family moved from Calhoun County, WV to Clay

county. Reed's Fork in Clay County is named for the Reed family.

Mary Connolly, a daughter of Patrick and Mary (Stallman) Connolly,

was born in 1832. She married Balas Deweese March 6, 1849.

Balas, a son of Isaac U. and Katherine (Carr) Deweese, was born in

Jackson County VA (WV) August 25, 1828. He enlisted for service in

the Mexican War at Ripley, VA in April 1847. By July 20, 1847 he had

arrived in Mexico, where he served with the 11th Regiment of New York

Infantry. He was discharged in New York August 18, 1848.

In 1861, Absolom Knotts and Balas organized an army company in

Calhoun County VA (WV). The company went South and in the spring of

1862, was attached to the 14th Regiment of VA Cavalry. That same

year, Balas assumed command of the company, Captain Knotts having been

elected to the Confederate legislature.

later divorced and Nancy married Hiram Corbitt on November 26, 1879 in

Roane County, WV.

In the 1870 Calhoun County census, John is listed with Susanne,

who was born in VA about 1841.

born in Kanawha County VA (WV) in 1836 and was killed by Union troops

in Fayette County VA in 1862. He married Lucinda Moore. Lucinda, a

daughter of James A. and Nancy (Shumate) Moore, was born in Tazewell

County VA about 1834. She married Samuel T. Isenhart in Calhoun County

WV September 30, 1867.

Perry was a Captain in the Calhoun County VA guerrilla group, the

"Moccasin Rangers."
