    William Clendenin, a son of Adam Clendenin, was born in Staplegorton

parish near Dangholm, Scotland in 1680 and died about 1764 in County

Down Ireland.  He married Roseann Kirkpatrick about 1700 in Scotland.

    Archibald Clendenin, a son of Adam Clendenin, was born in

Staplegorton parish near Dangholm, Scotland about 1685 and died in

Orange County VA in 1749.

7.CHARLES CLENDENIN     2.WILLIAM CLENDENIN    1.ADAM CLENDENIN

 

    Charles Clendenin, a son of William and Roseann (Kirkpatrick)

Clendenin, was born near Dumfries, Scotland in 1712 and died in

present day Kanawha County WV about 1793.

    Charles came to America with his brothers, James and William Jr.

in 1734.  He married Mary Ann Patterson in Lancaster County PA in 1735.  

Mary, a daughter of James Patterson, died in Greenbrier County VA about

1788.

    Charles and Mary settled in Greenbrier County VA before the

American Revolution.

10.ARCHIBALD CLENDENIN JR.    3.ARCHIBALD CLENDENIN    1.ADAM

CLENDENIN

 

    Archibald Clendenin Jr., a son of Archibald Clendenin, was born

about 1830 and was killed by Indians in the Muddy Creek Massacre in

Greenbrier County VA July 15, 1763.  He married Ann McSwain about

1754.

    On July 15, 1763, Indians killed and scalped Archibald Clendenin

Jr. and his brother Charles Clendenin and Charles' wife.  The Indians

captured Ann (McSwain) Clendenin and her two children Jane and James.

The Indians soon killed James, but Ann escaped at night and returned

to Muddy Creek and buried her husband and in laws.

    Archibald and Ann's daughter Jane was released by the Indians at

Pittsburgh May 14, 1765.  Ann married John Rodgers in 1767.

    James Clendenin, a son of Charles and Mary Ann (Patterson)

Clendenin, was born in Lancaster County PA in 1838 and died in

Rockcastle County KY about 1815.  He married Margaret Anderson in

Greenbrier County VA (WV) in 1758.  Margaret, a daughter of William and

Hannah Anderson, was born in Augusta County VA in 1742 and died in KY

about 1805.

    Alexander Clendenin, a son of Charles and Mary Ann (Patterson)

Clendenin, was born in Augusta County VA in 1754 and died in Mason

County VA in 1829.  He married Catherine Spencer February 18, 1790.

    Ann Clendenin, a daughter of Charles and Mary Ann (Patterson)

Clendenin, was born in 1756 and died in Clark County KY in March 1801.

She married William Boggs and they moved to Clark County KY.  William,

a son of James Charles and Margaret Jane (Sharp) Boggs, was born about

1751 and died in Knox County Ohio March 31, 1849.  He was at the

Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774 and served with William Clendenins

rangers in Kanawha County VA (WV) in 1788.

    William married Elizabeth Lawson in Knox County OH March 7, 1801.

    Mary Clendenin, a daughter of James and Margaret (Anderson)

Clendenin, was born in Greenbrier County VA (WV) in 1761 and died in

Roane County VA (WV) in 1853.  She married Charles Francis Boggs in

1776.  Charles, a son of James Charles and Margaret Jane (Sharp)

Boggs, was born in Chester County PA in 1754 and died in Braxton

County VA (WV) in 1836 or 1837.  He moved with his family to

Augusta County VA in 1762 and to Greenbrier County VA (WV) in 1771.

In 1774, Charles served nine months in the VA Militia in the Point

Pleasant, VA area and he and four brothers were in the battle of Point

Pleasant.  On March 1, 1776, Charles volunteered as a scout and Indian

spy for a 12 month tour with Captain Matthew Arbuckle.  He was

stationed at Point Pleasant and was discharged there after his tour

ended.  On May 1, 1777, he volunteered for a second 12 month tour and

was under the command of Captain Zera Coombs.  He was discharged at

the end of this second tour.  He was granted a pension October 4,

1833.

    They lived first in Greenbrier County and then in that part of

Kanawha County VA that eventually became Braxton County WV. On October

4, 1833, Charles appeared before a Justice of the Peace in Nicholas

County VA (WV) and gave a declaration in order to obtain a pension as

a veteran of the Revolution.  He was refused because his claim was

drawn by pension speculator W.G. Singleton and service was not proved.

    Lucinda Clendenin , a daughter of Alexander and Catherine

(Spencer) Clendenin, was born in 1787 and died in 1872.  She married

William Lewis in kanawha County VA (WV) March 9, 1808.  William, a son

of benjamin and Susannah (Nickell) Lewis, was born about 1750 and died

after 1840.
