a time in Pendleton County, as he is listed on the estate settlement of a Mr.
Richardson
Dennis Rodgers
wrote: "Within the territory of present day Lewis and Upshur ounties there
were two primary forts in those days, both privately constructed: West's Fort
at Jane Lew (built by Edmund West Sr.) and the larger fort at Buckhannon called Bush's Fort (built by John Bush). Neither of these so-called forts was much
more than a blockhouse or oversized log cabin enclosed by a wooden stockade
fence." Bush's Fort was attacked by Indians in March of 1782 and on
