1.HANS JACOB BRODBECK

Hans Jacob Brodbeck, a son of Adam and Anna (Roesch) Brodbeck, was

born December 12, 1697 in Muttenz, Switzerland and died there after

1747. Hans married Anna Schaffner September 20, 1720 in Multenz Basel,

Switzerland. Anna was born in Nov 1700 and died March 17, 1747 in

Multenz Basel.

Hans Jacob was a linen weaver at Muttenz and was probably still

living when his son, Adam, left for America in 1748. When his wife Anna

died in 1747 she was identified as the wife of the linen weaver and Adam

was identified as his son in the records concerning his immigration.

Hans Jacob was not referred to as deceased in either record. No death

record can be found at Muttenz.

2.ADAM BRODBECK    1.HANS JACOB BRODBECK

Adam Brodbeck, a son of Hans Jacob and Anna (Schaffner) Brodbeck,

was christened on May 17, 1722 in Muttenz, Switzerland and died between

1778-1779 in Shenandoah County VA. Another name for Adam was "Brubeck".

Adam married Elizabeth Zehnder about 1742 in Multenz, Switzerland.

Elizabeth died before 1773. Adam married Ursula (------) Rohrer October

9, 1773 in Shenandoah County VA.

In 1748 Adam Brodbeck, a weaver, requested and was granted

permission to leave for America with his wife and two children (Faust

Vol 11. p.47).

He arrived in Philadelphia on the ship "Crown" August 30, 1749,

along with several other families from Muttenz including his uncles Adam

and Nicolaus (Strassburgber and Hinke, Vol. I page 392). By 1760 Adam

Brodbeck and family were living in the Shenandoah Valley of VA. He

settled on a branch of Tumbling Run a few miles west of present day

Stasburg where he witnessed the will of his neighbor, John Funkhouser in

February 1760 along with John Nicolaus Baker. (Frederick County Will

Book 3, pages 255,256. This is the first record of Adam in VA.

He obtained a survey warrant for 300 acres on Tumbling Run, where he

lived, in June of 1763 (Peggy Joyner, Northern Neck Warrants and

Surveys, Vol 11. Frederick County, Portsmouth, 1985, Page 19). He

received a patent for this land from Lord Fairfax August 9, 1766.

Adam "Brewback" was naturalized as a citizen of VA in Frederick

County Court November 1 1768. (Frederick County Order Book 14 page 348).

The death date for Adam's first wife Elizabeth is unknown but on

October 9, 1773 he married Ursula Rohrer, widow of Jacob Rohrer, another

settler on Tumbling Run. At the time of the marriage they drew up a

contract that forfeited all dower interests in his property.

Jacob Rohrer and his family were associated with the Sabbatarian

group on Sandy Hook that had connections with the Cloisters at Ephrata

PA There is no evidence that the Brubecks have any further ties to the

Sabbatarians.

Adam wrote a will December 2, 1778 and died soon afterwards. The

will was probated March 25, 1779 with his son in law Abraham Funkhouser

as executor (Shenandoah County Will Book "A" page 205.) A final

settlement of the estate was made by Funkhouser in 1782, by which time

the youngest child had come of age. Ursula Brodbeck was living at the

time of the settlement.

1808. Johannes married Margaret ------- 1775. Johannes was also known as

"John Brubeck."

John remained at the family homestead on Tumbling Run in Shenandoah

County and received a deed to 150 acres of his fathers patent tract from

Abraham Funkhouser, executor of his fathers will, in October 1793.

(Shenandoah County Deed Book I, page 221)

John's name appears along with his brother Adam on Alexander

Machir's militia list for the Strasburg, VA area in 1776. The estate of

John Brubeck deceased was ordered to be appraised by Jacob Didawick,

Philip P. Baker and Rudolph Rosenberger in October 1808 and a public

sale of personal property was held November 3, 1808 (Shenandoah county

will book G pp 295-299. A settlement of the estate was reported to the

court March 1814. Margaret received one third of the money and the rest

was to be distributed to the ten children, four of whom were still

underage (Shenandoah County book H page 539). In 1818, Mary the youngest

child, still under age 14, was made a ward of George Hottel. George

reported the account of his deceased ward to the court in November 1822

(Shenandoah county Minute book 1816-1822 Oct Court 1818 and minute book

children in November 1822 (Deed Book BB page 528.)

Margaret Brubeck died in the winter of 1827-1828 and her personal

property was ordered appraised by Abraham Funkhouser, Hairy Pontzer and

John Harriman in February 1828 (Shenandoah County Will book O page 481)

According to the settlement of her estate the cost of settlement

exceeded the proceeds from the sale of her effects and there was nothing

to distribute to the heirs (Shenandoah County will book P page 318)

Three of John Brubecks children married children of George Baker.
