1706 | Dominique was Engagé Ouest that is: Hired for the West (Literally!!!): This term refers to the woodsmen also called travellers. The woodsmen were hired by fur merchants or trading companies to trap fur animals like the beaver, the river otter, the muskrat, etc, in the territories West of the St.Lawrence River valley, also called the "Pays-d'en-Haut" (Upper Canada). No hiring records survived for the governments of Trois-Rivières and Québec. The Canadians settlers were thus able to supplement their yearly income by working a few months in the fur trade. Later on, the lumber camps would fill the same need, or more recently, great hydro-electric works. The date given for this employment is 12-06-1706, at Berthier-en-haut, QC.2 |
