The following paragraph appears as a footnote in Tanguay. 'Marie sous le mon de Brechevin; souche des familles Bergevin dit Langevin; ancetre de Mgr. Langevin, premier eveque de Rimouski, et de l'Honarable Hector Louis Langeven, C.B. Commandeur de l'Ordre de St. Gregoire, et Ministre des Travaux Publics' Roughly translated this appears to be saying that Mathurin Bergevin also known as Langevin, was the ancestor of the first Bishop of Rimouski and of several other VIP's in Quebec history.2 |

Birth | GenDex user Linda Lee Hole gives his residence and
possibly birth as St. Jacques, Angers, France. Angers is a city in the
MaineAnjou region of France.3 |
|
Birth | circa 1609 | Mathurin was born circa
1609 at Anjou, France. He may not have been born in Anjou but at least
he came to New France from there. He was known as Langevin in France
and Bergevin in Canada.4 |
Marriage | circa May 1634 | Mathurin Bergevin married **Marie Tessier
circa May 1634. This marriage is not dated, however it was between
other acts dated 7 April 1634 and 3 July 1634. Tho' Hole gives the date
as 3 July 1634 in St. Jacques parish of the bishopic of Angus. Could
that be Anjou? I believe this is susposed to read Angers in the region
of Anjou.2,5 |
The ancient tribes galliqueses were the first
occupants of Normandy, in France. The prestigious name of Langevin
family would take its origins in this country. It was a point of
departure for the invasion of England by the Romans. When these last
had left the region to the IVesiècle, it continued to often be
governed by several tribes in quarrel one against the other. Wandrille
unified the duchy to the Ivesiècle and became the first count of
Normandy. The duchy was established more permanently by the year 911,
when Rollo, count of Orkney, invaded the territory. He besieged Paris and forced Charles the Simple, king of France to this time, to concede him the Normandy, but on the condition that his déscendants marry some French princesses. Rollo became therefore the first Duke of Normandy. The Langevin patronyme was met for the first time in Normandy where this distinguished family was sat formerly as of the members important of the aristocracy of this region. The first recorded was Osmond Agevin, a Norman noble of The Angevin in Normandy who joined the Duke Guillaume in his conquest of England in 1066. In gratitude, Guillaume rewarded the family of Angevyne and Angewyne, big properties in Lincolnshire, where they sat for several centuries. With the conquest of England in 1066 by William, duke of Normandy, the duchy came to make part of the crown of England. This constitutes the basis of the incredible influence of the duke, not only in England but also in all the France as far to the south that in Aquitaine. The Normandy spent to the royal dynastaie of the Plantagenêts and to England to the XIIe century. To this same time, Henri III, England married Aliénor of Aquitaine, acquéra of makes it even earths that possessed this last. To the XIIIe century, Philippe August of France, didn't take possession of the Normandy. It was to the basis of all major conflicts that opposed France in England in the years that followed. In 1259, Henri III finally conceded his rights on the territory in question. The Langevin patronyme was met in Normandy where they possessed some extensive properties. To that time family florissait in Normandy as one of the big families of this region. Them plugged also in Island-of-France and Brittany where they also acquired of properties. By the 15th century they also plugged to Poitou and acquired properties also. Camille Langevin was a revolutionary French, 1843-1913. Among characters the better known of the Langevins to this time, let's mention the Langevin family of Normandy among others. The escutcheon for the Langevin patronyme was constituted of: Red with a cross of gold and stars of money. (From Maison des noms, Montréal,Québec.) |
