Abernethy de Barrie was the son of Thomas Abernethy de Barrie. Is
there anyone out there with any proof of that? Yes. What is not yet positively, irrefutably proven beyond a shadow of all possible doubt is if George Abernethy of Barrie was the father of our immigrant Robert. George did have a son and heir, but that boy's name was James, and he or his heirs retained the lands of Barrie until 1722, at which time the estate was sold to Duff of Crombie. George Abernethy of Barrie, Strath Isla, Banff, Scotland was one of three sons (probably the elder) of Thomas Abernethy. Thomas was the son of John or James Abernethy. John/James was the 3rd son of Alexander Abernethy, 6th Baron Saltoun and his wife, Alison Keith. The 6th Baron Saltoun died in Apr of 1587. In 1609 Thomas Abernethy got a wadset of the lands of Auchincloich from his cousin, John, the 8th Lord Saltoun. Thomas' three sons were James (the advocate), George, and Alexander. George resigned his claim to Auchincloch in favor of his younger brother, Alexander (married an heiress, Isobel Hackett). I believe that James was younger still. He cannot have been older than George, or (legal career or no) James would have been "of Barrie", not George. James and Alexander (but evidently not George) attempted to conspire against their cousin, the 9th Lord Saltoun. James went to London and abstracted certain legal documents from the public records there. A very, very messy legal battle ensued over an already debt-ridden estate. Land & title went to sister of the 8th Baron, who had married Alexander Frasier, 9th of Philorth. Her son (another Alexander Frasier) was wounded at battle of Worcester 3 Sep 1651, but survived to become 11th Lord Saltoun (title remains in that family to the present). The cadet Abernethy line of Barrie/Auchincloich/Mayen finally went extinct in the male lineage in 1785, when James, only son and heir, died sans progeny and one of his sisters (presumably the elder, Jane/Jean) married a Major Alexander Duff of the 68th Regiment, who bought out the other sisters' portions and became Duff of Mayen.
