Jean Guyon and his oldest teen-aged son Jean (jr)
were hired to come to work in Canada in 1634. Two years later, his wife
Mathurine Robin and the rest of the children joined them. Over time,
some branches of that family changed their name to Dion. Today, there
are tens of thousands of descendants of that family that use the name
Dion. Guy Viel points out Céline Dion, but we know that her
ancestry comes directly from Jean Guyon. When some of us micro-historians use the expression "americanization", we mean the name changes that happened at the time when several French-Canadians migrated south to work in the mills of New England during the 1800s. Some names were spelled phonetically (Coté became Cody) or even "translated" (Boisvert ~ Greenwood). That is not what happened to Guyon, it had already morphed in the 1700s in Canada. It is not known what was the relationship Michelle Dion and Jean Guyon, if any.3 |
