of Arkansas & California
Born December 21, 1838, Jane Leeper Harrison was one of four children of Colonel Mathew Leeper (1804-1894) and his wife Lucy Elizabeth Washington Leeper (1817-1899). Lucy was a third cousin of our first President.
Jane Harrison was born at Fayetteville, Arkansas and died February 19, 1934, in San Francisco, California. She is buried in the cemetery at the Presidio of Monterey, CA.
Her husband, Colonel J. E. Harrison died quite young and is said to be buried in Arlington National Cemetery. Jane was a widow for 70 years, living in Sherman, Texas and in Washington, DC with her close friend, Mrs. Walter Reed, wife of the Surgeon General of the Army. In 1922, she came to California.
Her father Colonel Leeper, was Commissioner of Indian Affairs, a position he held during four administrations, with his headquarters at Sherman, Texas. The family has a peace pipe given to Col. Leeper by Chief Geronimo and they also have a knee buckle worn by George Washington.
Mrs. Harrison's grandfather was James Leeper, born Sept 1751, in Lincoln Co., NC; died 7 Jan 1842, at Fayetteville, AR. He enlisted at the age of 18 in NC Troops at the beginning of the Revolutionary War and was in the Battle of King's Mountain.
Mrs. Harrison is buried next to her sister, Laura Fairfax Leeper Plummer, and her husband, Brigadier general Plummer, who is credited with building the Presidio of Monterey.

"Descended directly from Sir Thomas Harrison, Knight, Lord Mayor of the city and Ainsty of York, England, is Cuthbert Harrison, Esq., and his son Burrill, who was baptized in the Parish of St. Margarette, Westminster, England on December 28, 1637. They were the first Harrisons to settle in Virginia, in what was then Stafford County on the northern side of the Chappawamsic Creek near Dumfries, where today lies the old estate called "CHAPPAWAMSIC". This site is easily accessible from Washington. To Quantico and from there to Chappawamsic Creek is about one mile.
Burrill Harrison II was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses. He was sent in April 1690 as ambassador to the Piscataway Indians. From his marriage were born two sons, William Harrison III and Thomas Harrison III.
Thomas Harrison IV moved across the line into what is now known as Prince William County and was elected to the Office of High Sheriff in 1732.
Thomas Harrison V, who lived to the advanced age of 101, moved to Kentucky. One of his children, William Butler Harrison was "Cornet" (Lieutenant) in "Lee's Legion" in 1776. He later moved to Bunting reek, Stafford, County, Virginia. One of his sons Valentine Harrison VI was an officer in the Continental Army. Another son, the Rev. Thomas Harrison VI was educated in London, England and was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Church by the Bishop of London in 1774.
Seth Harrison, a son of the Rev. Thomas Harrison and Cuthbert Harrison V were sent to Kentucky to look after a grant of 6000 acres of land they received from the Continental Congress in the recognition of services to the country.
Cuthbert Harrison V was a member of the first Kentucky Legislature in 1793.
Sarah Harrison and her husband Col. Levin Powell moved to Loundoun Co., Virginia. Col. Powell was in the Revolutionary War, a founder of the federal Party in Loundoun County, a member of the Continental Congress and a close personal friend of General Washington.
A son, Levin Powell, Jr. was a prominent importer, exporter and a large shipping merchant of Alexandria, VA. His son, Cuthbert Powell represented his district in the Federal Congress.
Thomas Jefferson Harrison VII, son of Matthew Harrison (Sept 19, 1763) was an officer in the U.S. Army.
Burr William VII represented Loundoun County, VA in the State Legislature from 1840 to 1847. He was born January 1, 1811.
Mathew Harrison VIII (Dec. 12, 1822) was a member of the Virginia Legislature for several terms. His son, Thomas IX was a Judge in the 17th Judicial Circuit of Virginia.
