Mother: Carolista DAVIS |
John William's father-in-law, J.P Davis stayed close to John Bentley during his childhood...he told John Bentley that he (JP) was related to Jefferson Davis and both his family and our Harrison's served under Lighthorse Harry Lee during the American Revolution. He also maintained that our Harrison's came to the colonies in conjunction with the arrival of the first Governor of Carolina and served in his administration.
John Bentley, when he was old enough(late teens early 20s), headed down state to the Hollywood area where the film industry was just getting started...we aren't sure what he did down there... but we do know that he married a silent screen actress(name unknown)...evidently he soon after found his bride with another man .....I would imagine they weren't rehearsing any lines (joke...silent screen et al) because he either beat the man to death or close enough to it that he immediately enlisted in the U S Navy ,shipped out and served through WW1. Family tended not to talk that incident up much. He met, courted, and married my grandmother when he was in port at the Brooklyn Navy Yard after the war and to my knowledge only returned to Northern California once or at most twice before dying. He spent his remaining years working as a civilian electrician/communications specialist at the Navy Yard wiring up the battle ships.
