Colonial Families of the United States of America: Volume 5 (third child of JEDDE CLARKE)
JEDDE CLARKE, b. 1st October, 1784, at Westerly, Rhode Island; d. at Manchester, Indiana, 11th January, 1857. About the year 1800, he removed to Newport, Rhode Island, and engaged in ship building with his father and brother George; about 1820, removed to Manchester, Indiana, engaging for many years in steam boat building in Cincinnati. He was a member of the Methodist Church, and prominent in its work, and was commonly called "The Peacemaker;" m. at Newport, Rhode Island, 15th January, 1807, Mary BARKER, dau. of Matthew and Eunice (PECKHAM) BARKER. She was a sister of the Hon. Peter BARKER of Newport, and was descended from James BARKER, one of the grantees of the Rhode Island Charter granted by Charles II, and a long time Assistant Governor of the Colony. She was also descended from Peter EASTON, Treasurer of the Colony 1672-1677, and from Nicholas EASTON, named in Charter above, and several times Governor.
