The Cuntz families were well represented in the record books for Rumbach and surrounding areas for over 300 years. Most of them worked as animal fur trappers, foresters, wildlife warden, fisher, and such. This meant that the family was solidly connected with the rulers of the area, a status that is supported by the fact that on at least one occasion, one of the families was married in the Flickenstein Castle at Lembach, Germany. Our ancestry of Cuntz families covers a period of over 270 years beginning with Hans Cuntz who was born about 1415 and lived in Bruchweiler, Germany.

Hans* Cuntz (abt 1415 - 1488)

children: @ Hennen Cuntz (1450 - abt 1522)

We know of Hans* Cuntz (abt 1415 - 1488) only as the parent of Hennen Cuntz (1450 - abt 1522). It is likely that he lived in Cleeburg/Alsace at least part of his life since that is where his children were born.

father: Hans* Cuntz (abt 1415 - 1488)

children: Bernbach Cuntz (1480 - aft. 1548)

@ Cuntz Cuntz (1490 - 1560)

Hennen Cuntz moved to Bruchweiler about 1470 where he married in 1472. We do not know who he married, however. The couple had two known children, Bernbach and Cuntz Cuntz.

father: Hennen Cuntz (1450 - abt 1522)

children: Hans Cuntz (1530 - 1603)

The records appear to indicate that Cuntz Cuntz had the same given name as his surname. Although we might speculate that this simply reflected that he was called primarily by his last name, the records would indicate otherwise. So we will use the name Cuntz Cuntz that appears in the records.

Our ancestor, Cuntz Cuntz, father of Hans Cuntz (1530 - 1603), was the forester of Wegelnburg. He spent a preponderance of his forestry career in Rumbach where he died. He married about 1516 but we do not know to whom. His only known child was Hans Cuntz (1530 - 1603).

.........................................*1st Husband of Louisa Young:

As noted earlier, the 17th century was particularly hard for our ancestors. The reformation that began about 50 years earlier had resulted in a lot of hostilities among the population. By 1618 wars waged at the national level set army against army and gave rise to the Thirty-Year Wars (1618 - 1648). These wars killed many of the residents of Rumbach and the surrounding areas. Then in 1635 the bubonic plague struck again in and around Rumbach. By the middle of the 17th century the county of Wegelnburg lost over 75% of its population and an even larger percentage of its stock. For the managers of counties like Wegelnburg, the population had dropped so low that there were not enough people to do the work. Taxes dwindled to almost nothing and the ruling families became threatened by lack of income.

Many areas other than Rumbach suffered similar casualties. Therefore, it was not an option to relocate people from other regions to replace the losses. So an invitation was sent to neighboring countries such as Switzerland and Austria offering opportunities for immigration to the almost vacant areas in Germany. So beginning with the end of the 16th century and early 17th century, many immigrants came from other countries to re-settle Rumbach and surrounding areas. In the Rumbach area there was a particularly heavy influx of people from Switzerland. And so it was during this period that we begin to see ancestors from Switzerland begin to appear in our family tree.

One such family was the Hauswirth family. The Hauswirth surname entered the family tree through the marriage of Magdalena* Hauswirth (November 24, 1676 - 1758) to Johannes* Schneider (January 5, 1675/76 - bef 1730). Of course, with this marriage into the family tree, all the ancestors of Magdalena" Hauswirth also become our ancestors and as you would expect, these ancestors were also Swiss. We will begin our visit of the Hauswirth family with our oldest known member of this line. This would be Benedict Hauswirth (abt 1530 - ?).

Christina's father, Christian Kropfli (? - 1579) was a Landes Seckelmeister (land surveyor) in 1564 through 1579. Christina's mother was Margarethea ?. We have no further information about Christina's parents. Peter and his wife Christina had 6 children, one of whom was our ancestor, Samuel (Lieutenant) Hauswirth (1612/13 - ?).

On Arpil 27, 1634, he married Margaret Wuersten (February 6, 1613/14 - ?) in Saanen, Switzerland. The couple had 3 known children, one of whom was Peter* Hauswirth (1642 - 1715/16).

Peter* Hauswirth (1642 - aft 2/16/1715/16) was born in Saanen, Switzerland and died in Nothweiler, Germany. Like his father, who was a Lieutenant, Peter Hauswirth enjoyed living a somewhat mobile existence. Peter's father-in-law, Balthasar Hauswirth, had lived in Germany about 1657 - 1662, then returned permanently to Switzerland where his daughter, Barbara (1644), met Peter, her future husband. They married before 1667 in Saanen, Switzerland. The newly-weds immigrated to Lemberg, Germany about 1665 where Peter was a milker in 1667 through 1669. Then, about 1674, they went back to Switzerland for nearly a decade (1674 - 1683) before returning to Alsace and Germany. He was in Woerth/Alsace by 1683 and in Dorrenbach by 1685. In 1687 he was in Rumbach. The couple had 6 children, one of whom was Magdalena* Hauswirth (November 24, 1676 - 1758), our ancestor, who married Johannes* Schneider (1675/76 - bef 1730).

On August 22, 1710 Peter Hauswirth and his three married daughters, Anna Marie*, Magdalina*, and Marie Apollonia*, 'now citizens of Germany' sold their remaining property in Switzerland to Martin* Jaggi. (Saanen Protocoll 1710 Records.) Peter's wife, Barbara, must have died shortely beforehand, convincing him that now any thought of returning to Switzerland was past. Upon his death which occurred sometime after February 16, 1715/16, Peter Hauswirth had no adult surviving sons. His only son, Peter died young and unmarried before 1710. Peter* Hauswirth died at the home of a daughter in Nothweiler.

Peter Hauswirth owned no real estate and had no adult surviving sons upon his death. He was still a helper to a schoolmaster in Nothweiler on October 28, 1714, at the age of 72.

We have already met Magdalena* Hauswirth (November 24, 1676 - 1758) as the wife of Johannes* Schneider , our ancestor who introduced the Hauswirth surname into our family tree. Magdalena* Hauswirth (November 24, 1676 - 1758) was 'double' a Hauswirth. Her mother was also a Hauswirth, Barbara* Hauswirth (Dec 18, 1644 - bef Aug 22, 1710), who descended from a Hauswirth line that begins, in our records, with Simon Hauswirth (abt 1537 - ?). The Simon Hauswirth descendants were also of Saanen, Switzerland so it is likely that they are lines of the same family. So, as with our German lines such as the Schneider, Wagner, and others, the marriage of the parents of Magdalena* Hauswirth (November 24, 1676 - 1758) likely represents a cross linking within the same family. However, we do not have sufficient data to determine that this is true.

Let's now visit the Hauswirth line that begins with Simon Hauswirth (abt 1537 - ?) and leads to Magdalena's mother, Barbara* Hauswirth (Dec 18, 1644 - bef Aug 22, 1710). We do not know precisely where Simon was born. However, his descendants were born in Saanen, Switzerland so he lived there at least part of his life. Simon married three times and had children with each wife. He married his first wife, Christina Haldi (? - 1579) on November 3, 1558 with whom he had 8 children. On August 23, 1578 he married his second wife, Benedicta Von Siebenthal. Benedicta's father was Christian Von Siebenthal (abt 1502 - ?). Simon had one child with Benedicta who was our ancestor, Balthasar Wauswirth (Feb 13, 1577/78 - ?). Finally, on May 4, 1580 he married his third wife, Kueugeli Haldi (abt 1550 - ?). With Kueugeli he had 4 children.

Magdalena Hauswirth (February 11, 1615/16 - ?)

Our ancestor, Balthasar Hauswirth (Feb 13, 1577/78 - ?), son of Simon Hauswirth (abt 1537 - ?) married Magdalena Fleuti (February 9, 1576/77 - ?) on October 24, 1597 in Saanen, Switzerland. Magdalena's father was Ulrich Fleuti (abt 1539 - ?) and her mother was Christina ? (abt 1540 - 1577). We have no further information about Magdalena's parents. Balthasar and Magdalena had 2 known children, one of whom was Balthasar Hauswirth (July 24,1614 - bef 1680), our ancestor.

Balthasar Hauswirth (July 24,1614 - bef 1680) married Anna Jacky (June 28, 1613 - ?) on November 29, 1640 in Saanen, Switzerland. Anna Jacky was born in Saanen, Switzerland. The couple had 11 children, one of whom was Barbara* Hauswirth (Dec 18, 1644 - bef Aug 22, 1710), the mother of Magdalena* Hauswirth (November 24, 1676 - 1758). Balthasar, his wife Anna Jacky and their family moved to Bad Bergzabern, Germany about 1657. They departed about 5 years later in 1662 back to Saanen. They left behind, in Bad Bergzabern, Benedict and Barbara, who were then about 19 and 18 years old, respectively. However, Barbara eventually went back (about 1674 - 1684) to Saanen, Switzerland. Later she returned to Germany.
