Nearly as old as our Wagner line, our oldest known Reiss ancestor was Andreas Reiss (1408 - 1460), born about 1408. About 1440 and onwards Andreas Reiss was administrator of the Trifels Castle near Annweiler. He was mentioned in "The Zweibruecken Court and Duchy Personnel 1444 - 1604." We do not know the name of Andreas Reiss wife. We only know about two children for whom we have no names. For the purpose of being able to identify these two sons, we will call them, N.N.(1440) Reiss (abt 1440 - abt 1498) and N.N. (1446) Reiss (1446 - ?).

We do not know the name of the son of Andreas Reiss. He is known to us simply as N.N.(1440) Reiss (abt 1440 - abt 1498). Also, we do not know the name of his wife. We know only that they had two sons. The eldest was Andreas (I)
Reiss (abt 1475 - abt 1521) and his younger brother was Lorenz Reiss (abt 1482 - aft 1521). In 1521 Lorenz Reiss lived in Annweiler.

Andreas (I) Reiss (abt 1475 - aft 1521) was the "Old city clerk of Zweibruecken 1521." The name of the town, Zweibruecken actually means "two bridges." The brother of Andreas (I) Reiss (abt 1475 - aft 1521), Lorenz Reiss (abt 1482 - aft 1521), resided 1521 in Annweiler. It appears that the grandfather of Andreas (I) Reiss, Andreas Reiss (about 1408 - 1460), was manager or administrator of the Trifels Castle by Annweiler, beginning about 1440. N.N.(1440) Reiss likely moved to Zweibruecken where Andreas I probably was born. Sister Reiss's husband, Rev. Jacob Streccius, was a Lutheran schoolmaster 1540 - 1551 in Annweiler; Pastor 1551 - 1567 in Mimbach; and Pastor 1567 - 1577 in Queichhambach. We have no information about the wife of Andreas (I) Reiss (1475 - 1521) but we know that he had 3 children, one of whom was Rauf Reiss (1515 - 1556).

Weckhard Reiss (abt 1549 - December 16, 1606) was the grandson of Andreas (I) Reiss (abt 1475 - abt 1521). Weckhard, which is Walter in English, was a Zweibruecken burgermeister in 1588. A burgermeister is a town mayor. In 1606 Weckhard was a member of the City Council and between 1580 and 1606 he was a Swan Innkeeper. The name of the town, Zweibruecken actually means "two bridges."
Weckhard, or Walter in English, was married, or at least had children by three women. He first married Barbara Weissbrot (1550 - 1579) on October 25, 1571. After the death of Barbara, he had a daughter with a woman known to us only as "household maid." On June 20, 1580 he married Ottilia Schley (abt 1559 - aft 1606) from Zweibruecken. They had 9 children.

The Kern family appears as an exception of the general rule that a family line usually pursued a main vocation. The Kern family seemed to have a broad spectrum of vocations. This may be because they were aligned with the ruling family and had more flexibility for choosing vocations in which the children could select.

Philipp Kern (abt 1505 - abt 1565) was our oldest known Kern ancestor. He lived in "Diepurg" (perhaps this was Dietrichingen) as of St. Ulrich's Day in 1537, but in Hornbach by 1541. Philipp was obviously well educated for he served as "keller," the business manager, for the Zweibruecken Duchy in the important village of Hornbach by 1541. Philipp's wife was N.N. (1510)? (abt 1510 - aft 1548). Philipp died in Hornbach.

He married Gertrude (1573)? (abt 1573 - aft 1609) and lived in Schoenau. He was living in Schoenau at the time of his death. Their son, Hans (II) Kern (abt 1603 - 1667), was the only child listed in the 1609 census.

(1606) Reiss (abt 1606 - bef 1666), sometime after 1627 and lived in Nothweiler until after his wife died. Then, he moved to Rumbach to live with his son Hans (III) Kern (abt 1628 - 1674). Hans (II) Kern lived during the devastating Thirty-Year Wars (1618 - 1648) as did his son, Hans (III) Kern for the first 20 years of his life.

In December 1657, at the age of about 36, Hans (III) Kern married Barbara Neuhart (1635 - ?).
This marriage introduced the Neuhart blood into our ancestral tree for the first time. Hans (III) Kern and Barbara had 5 children that we know about, one of whom was Christoph* Kern (1663/64 - 1748).

Most Kerns died in their 40s or early 50s, but at age of 84 Christoph* Kern (January 14, 1663/64 - 1748) is a notable exception. There appears to be some error regarding the date of birth of the last two children. One explanation might be that the children, Anna and Adam were twins.
