The single longest line in our family tree is the Jung/Young family. Starting with our oldest known Jung ancestor, Hans Velten Jung (abt 1675 - ?) and moving to the most recent direct Young ancestor, Audra Lavada Young (January 24, 1907 - April 8, 1990), we traverse a period of about 315 years. For this visit, we will begin with Hans Velten Jung (abt 1675 - ?).

David Daniel* Jung (April 17, 1815 - ?)

Johann Michael* Jung (1777 - February 24, 1851) was the last of our Jung direct ancestors to spend his full life in Europe. Johann Michael Jung, Sr. was a cousin of Johann Hauther (1771 - 1807), born in Rosenkopf. Likely, it was through Hauther that Michael Jung moved to Rumbach. Michael had a sister, Elisabeth Margaret Jung, who was born September 14, 1810. She married Martin Neuhart (June 6, 1806 - ?). Johann Michael Jung, Sr. married Maria Elisabeth* Rucklos on February 25, 1800. This couple had 5 children, one of whom was Johann Michael* Jung (May 13, 1802 - December 9, 1879).

Caroline Young (May 19, 1832 - ?)

Salome Young (July 23, 1836 - ?)

Luise Young (1839 - 1843)

The Jung family in Germany had been a family of weavers and during most of Michael's life, times had been hard. Michael had been born at a time when Germany was highly fractionated into over 300 small states and principalities. Napoleon had risen to power and was in the process of conquering Germany and most of Europe. By the time Michael was 10 years old, Napoleon had been defeated. Germany had been largely consolidated into a few larger states and a police-state government had been established that repressed the population.

Johann Michael* Jung (May 13, 1802 - December 9, 1879) married Catharina Barbara* Brubach (March 10, 1801 - March 12, 1890) on November 1, 1827 in Rumbach, Bavaria, Germany. The couple had 4 children the oldest of whom was Frederick Young (1830 - 1912). The youngest child, Luise Jung, died when she was about 4 years old. A marginal note in the record of this family stated, "an unfortunate child" leading us to believe that she may have suffered a birth defect or other infirmity. Johann Michael* Jung (May 13, 1802 - December 9, 1879) immigrated to America on August 4, 1854 (date of arrival in New York, NY) aboard the ship named the REGULATOR. He came to America with his wife Barbara (who went by the diminutive Barbary)

and his two daughters, Caroline and Salome. Michael was 52 years old when he immigrated. His father had died in early 1851 and his mother died on July 11, 1852. It is likely that Michael used his inheritance to move his family to America.

A year after arriving in America, Michael Young bought land 80 acres from Herman Hahn on Oct 11, 1855 in Monroe County, Ohio. This property became home of the Jung family descendants for the next 130 years. A Young descendant still resides near this location.

Frederick Young (December 23, 1830 - February 4, 1912) Born in Rumbach, died in Lewisville, Monroe County, Ohio

mother: Catharina Barbara* Brubach (March 10, 1801 - March 12, 1890)

wife: Eva Pfeiffer (August 18, 1840 - February 18, 1919) married on May 20, 1856

children: Frederick Young (November 1857 - December 17, 1942)

Mary Elizabeth Young (December 9, 1873 - June 4, 1926)

Anna Christine Young (July 15, 1882 - April 1, 1957)

Frederick Young immigrated to America about 3 months ahead of his parents and sisters. He went to Monroe County where there were a large number of his friends and relatives from the Rumbach, Germany area. Two years after arriving in Monroe County, Ohio, on May 20, 1856, Frederick married Eva Pfeiffer. Eva lived with her parents about a mile away from the farm that he and his father bought near Lewisville, Ohio. The couple had 8 children, one of whom was Louisa Young (December 22, 1863 - June 17, 1913).

Louisa Young and August Herman Frank conceived a child about August 1880 who was born Willie Young on May 20, 1881. August and Louisa never married and the child was given the surname of his mother, Louisa.

Three and a half years after the birth of her first son, Willie Young, Louisa married John Daniel Keylor (March 23, 1860 - September 29, 1937) on November 29, 1884. The couple had 4 children, three of whom survived to adulthood.

Louise Young is buried at Hope Ridge Cemetery on Route 800, about 2 miles north of the Woodsfield Court House. Hope Ridge Cemetery is on the right side of the road, going north from Woodsfield, OH. Her grave marker is located near the back of the cemetery and about midway between the left corner of the cemetery and the centerline of the cemetery-church lot. The church is long since gone but in the year 2000, its location is obvious by the absence of headstones. At the time of this writing, the cemetery was nicely mowed and reasonably well cared for.

The Brubach line is a major contributor to our current families' bloodline. Because it is so extensively represented in our family tree and because it is a recent contributor, our DNA should reflect a healthy contribution from the Brubach line.

The Brubach line came from Switzerland. They were one of the immigrant families that moved to Germany to replenish the devastated population resulting from the Thirty-Year Wars, the Wars of

Reunification, the repeated visitation of the bubonic plague, famine and other events that depopulated the land of our ancestors. We will begin our visit of the Brubach family with our oldest known Brubach ancestor, Franz Brubach (abt 1650 - November 5, 1694).

Franz Brubach (abt 1650 - November 5, 1694) Born in the city of Zurich, Switzerland and died in Annweiler, Germany

wife: Susanna Reeb (March 2, 1650/51 - November 3, 1694) married on July 14, 1674

children: @ Hans Jakob Brubach (November 18, 1678 - 1755)

Johann Michael Brubach (November 22, 1684 - July 16, 1685)

@ Abraham Brubach (August 31, 1686 - 1748)

Johann Michael Brubach (March 23, 1690/91 - ?)

Franz Brubach was born about 1650 in the city of Zurich, Switzerland. The Zurich city records from that era are missing and so we can not determine Franz Brubach's parents. Franz had already begun his trade as a blacksmith in Zurich when he immigrated to Annweiler, Pfalz, Germany sometime around the year 1670. He was one of the immigrants that had been invited to Germany to repopulate the area following the devastating "30 Years War." Franz married Susanna Reeb, an Annweiler resident, on July 14, 1674. In Annweiler, Franz continued his work as a blacksmith, a trade which became a family vocation of his children and grandchildren. Franz and Susanna were members of the Reformed Protestant Church in Annweiler. Both Franz and Susan became victims of the Bubonic Plague and died during the same week. Susanna died November 3, 1694 at the age of 43 and Franz died November 5, 1694. The couple are buried at Annweiler.

Of Franz and Susanna (Reeb) Brubach's five known children, one son, Johann Michael Brubach (November 22, 1684 - July 16, 1685), died within the first year of life. Susanna Brubach (November 15, 1681 - ?) was confirmed in Annweiler. The second Susanna in the family, Susanna Brubach (May 7, 1682 - ?), was a niece or relative taken into the home. Three sons and probably the two Susanna grew to adulthood.

When Franz and Susanna (Reeb) Brubach both died of bubonic plague within the same week, they left 5 children ages 3 to 16. All were confirmed in Annweiler, though they later scattered. Jacob, Susanna and Abraham went to Rumbach; Michael went to Bergzabern; but the adopted sister can not be traced.

Caroline Young (May 19, 1832 - ?)

Catharina Barbara* Brubach (went by the diminutive name of Barbary) married Johann Michael* Jung on November 1, 1827 in Rumbach, Bavaria, Germany. Shortly after the death of Michael's parents, Michael, Catharina Barbara, and their two daughters immigrated to America in 1854. Barbary and Michael's son, Frederick, came to America in the spring of 1854. The rest of the family: Michael, Barbary and their two daughters, Salome and Caroline immigrated in the fall.

Shortly after their immigration the name was changed from Jung to Young. This was probably not an overt change as much as it was an Anglicisation over some period of time. Various U.S. Federal Census give spellings that include Jung, Joung and Young. In the USA 1880 Federal Census for Summit Township, Monroe County, Ohio, Catharina Barbara* Brubach Young, age 79, was living with her son, Frederick Young. Her husband, Johann Michael* Jung/Young had died December 9, 1879. She lived nearly another 10 years, dying on March 12, 1890 at the age of 89 years.

Our Brubach family was a good example of the cross-linkage that frequently occurred within a family in the small, relatively isolated, villages of our ancestors. This process is described in more detail on page XX. The three major offsets that appear on the table, "Direct Descendants of Franz Brubach" on page XX is also a manifestation of the cross-linkage that occurred within our Brubach family.

The second line of the Brubach family that also originated with Franz Brubach, ran through his son, Hans Jakob Brubach (November 18, 1678 - 1755), to his daughter, Maria Catharina Brubach (July 5, 1707 - 1740). The Brubach surname in this branch truncated with the marriage of Maria Catharina Brubach (July 5, 1707 - 1740) to Heinrich* Schnieder (January 31,1705/06 - October 6, 1783). Our known ancestral line of this branch ran through Maria Elisabeth* Schneider (January 22, 1739/40 - October 11, 1793).
