KEY OF SYMBOLS AND CONVENTIONS

USED IN THIS BOOK

SYMBOL MEANING

* . The appearance of an asterisk (*) by a name indicates the name by which the individual was known or called.

+ . A plus sign (+) is used in front of a name to indicate the individual as a spouse.

This appears primarily in the Descendant Outline Charts to designate spouses.

 

@ . The @ symbol is used in the Ancestor Data to identify direct ancestors.

 

? . The use of a question mark (?) in conjunction with a first or last name indicates that this portion

of the name is not known.


N.N . Means "no name." This indicates the name of the individual is not known.


(year) . The use of a year in parentheses where a name would normally appear indicated that while the

name of the individual is not known, the (year) is used to identify the specific individual.


bef . Used before a date, this abbreviation indicates that the event occurred before the date that follows.

 

aft . Used before a date, this abbreviation indicates that the event occurred after the date that follows.


abt . Used before a date, this abbreviation indicates that the approximate date of the event follows.


b . Used primarily in the Descendants Charts to indicate "born."


d . Used primarily in the Descendants Charts to indicate "died."
