Ethel Watkins (Smith) Davis Family

Ethel Wakins Smith was born 27 Dec 1878 in New Orleans to Alexander and Nida (Hewett) Smith. The family moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1884, and Ethel grew up there.

Sometime before 1907 Ethel married Elon Jay Davis. In the 1910 East Carroll Parish LA census, [1910 Federal Census: Louisiana, East Carroll Parish, First Ward, ED 39, household 88/89] the family is listed with two daughters (Eunice, age 3; and Dorris, age 2) and a son, Elon J. Davis, Jr., age 2 months. Elon Sr. was a salesman in a general store.

The family has not yet been located in the 1920 census, but by 1930 [1930 Federal Census: Texas, Travis County, Austin Township, ED 25, page 11B] they were living in Austin (Travis County), Texas. Two additional sons (Joseph, age 17; and Hewett, age 16) are listed in the census with Elon, Ethel, and Elon Jr. Elon Sr. was a grocery merchant in Austin.

Ethel's mother, Nida Hewett Smith, was living with them in that census year, and continued there until at least 1933. However she was living with her son Robert Quinn Smith in Vicksburg in 1938 when she died.

Ethel Davis died in Travis County on 26 Dec 1969. Elon Sr. had died earlier on 25 Dec 1959.

Elon Jay Davis was born 23 Oct 1870 in Edwards, Mississippi to Joseph and Amanda (Watson) Davis. The 1880 census shows that he was one of eight children. [1880 Federal Census: Mississippi, Hinds County, Beat 3, page 296B]
