Charles Wallace Smith Family

Charles Wallace Smith was born 31 May 1877 in New Orleans to Alexander and Nida (Hewett) Smith. The family moved to Vicksburg, Mississippi in 1884, and Wallace, as he was known, grew up there.

By 1902 Wallace was in Mobile, Alabama where he married Gertrude E. Cox on May 22. They must have moved back to Mississippi for their first child, Hugh Wallace (or Wallace Hugh) was born there about 1904. They seemed to have moved back to Alabama, perhaps Mobile, by 1907 when their daughter, Nida was born. A second daughter, Gladis, was born about 1909. The family was in Mobile for the 1910 census.[1910 Federal Census: Alabama, Mobile County, Mobile City, ED 115, 6A line 7, household 111/117] Wallace was working in a steam laundry at the time.

They were still in Alabama in 1912 when their son Alexander was born; but were in Clarksdale, Mississippi in 1918 when Wallace's father died. By the 1920 census, [1920 Federal Census: Mississippi, Coahoma County, Clarksdale, ED 36, page 42B] Wallace's mother, Nida was living with them. The daughter Gladis was not listed in the family and since she would have been only eleven at the time, it is possible that she had died young.

Sometime before the 1930 census, [1930 Federal Census: Alabama, Mobile County, Mobile City, ED 46, sheet 13B, household 300/314] Wallace and Gertrude moved back to Mobile. Alexander was living with them and was working as a telegraph messenger. Neither Hugh Wallace nor Nida were at home leading me to believe they were already married.

According to a letter that his mother wrote in 1933,

Wallace had been complaining about his stomach for sometime, and he had to be operated on. The next evening he died at the hospital. It was a great shock to me because I did not know he was so ill. He has been dead 3 years. He left 2 sons and Nida, named after me, she has 2 children, a girl and a boy, six months old. Wallace named the girl for me. There are 2 Nida's now in their family. Poor dear Wallace loved his Mama. He is buried in Mobile.

A Charles W. Smith is listed in the Mobile Death Records as having died in April 1930 and this may be Wallace.

Nothing further has been learned about this family as of this writing.
