Some Austin Washington Bowles' Descendents
in Sumner County, Kansas

Three other children of Austin and Nancy Bowles who are buried in the Praire Lawn Cemetery in Wellington are Susan Katherine Bowles who married Benjamin Rush, Marion Francis Bowles whose remains were brought from California, and Delia Bowles who married R. F. Beard late in life. None of these had children. This is their memorial.

Susan Bowles Rush

Susan Katherine Bowles Rush
4 Jul 1853 - 9 Feb 1914
Wife of Benjamin Rush
Daughter of Austin and Nancy Bowles

Susan married Benjamin H. Rush in Metcalfe County KY on 2 Sep 1888. By 1900 they were in Spearfish City (Lawrence County), South Dakota. It is not clear what happened to Susan's mental health, but by 1910 she had been committed to the Kansas State Asylum in Miami County. When she died four years later, her sisters buried her in Wellington. The last we know of her husband, he was still in Spearfish in 1910.

Marion Francis Bowles

Marion Francis Bowles
19 Jul 1858 - 6 May 1927
Died in Chico, California
Son of Austin and Nancy Bowles

Marion Bowles left home in Metcalfe County sometime after 1880. By 1900 he was living in Baker County, Oregon where he was mining for gold. In 1903 he married Maude Agnes Geer, daughter of Oregon Governor Theodore T. Geer [see http://www.osl.state.or.us/lib/governors/ttg.htm]. Maude died four years later of pneumonia. They had no children. Marion continued mining in Oregon and then travelled south into California where he died in 1927. A year later his sister, Cordelia paid to have his remains sent to Wellington for burial.

Cordelia Ann Bowles Beard

Cordelia Ann "Delia" Bowles Beard
19 Aug 1862 - 5 Jan 1949
Wife of R. F. Beard
Daughter of Austin and Nancy Bowles

Cordelia "Delia" Bowles was the last child born to Austin Bowles. She moved with her sister Susan Rush to South Dakota by 1900. Apparently when Susan was committed, Delia went to Sumner County KS to be near her other sisters. In 1917, at the age of 54, Delia married a widower, R. F. Beard in Wichita KS. After his death, she continued to live in the area, dying in Milam KS in 1949.
