Subject: Triplett family

The house next door to ours is referred to as "Ashland" or the Triplett house, which was built ca 1820 by William Triplett. The property that our house is built on was the final subdivision of that property. I have a brief history of the land and Ashland which indicates that the land was granted to Francis Triplett in the early 1700's. Since he owned property and a home near by (called "Red Hill" - just several miles away) he apparently did not build a home on it. In 1757 Francis willed the land to his eight children, including Thomas Triplett and Francis Triplett who was a member of Col. George Washington's regiment in the French & Indian War. Do you think this could be the Col. Francis Triplett you reference? You reference Faquier County, but this is in Fairfax County, VA. Further information states that the Triplett family were early land grantees in Fairfax. William Triplett served as a vestry man of Truro Parish, along with George Washington and George Mason. They also reference a Mrs. John D. DeBell, who apparently owns oil portraits of William Walter Triplett and his wife.

10 May 1748 - From "Genealogies of Virginia Families from Tyler's Quarterly Historical and Genealogical Magazine, Vol. III pages 605-609, 1981, Genealogical Publishing Co.":

Light has been thrown on Colonel Francis Triplett's parentage by the recent discovery of a copy of the old will of William Triplett of Prince William County (dated May 10, 1748), the original will having been destroyed in the Civil War. The copy, made almost fifty years after the date of the original will, was found in the Land Cause Book of Prince William County, 1789-93, pages 33-36.

William(3) Triplett, of Prince William County, father of Colonel Francis(4) Triplett, was probably born in King George County, and was the son of William(2) Triplett whose will was proved in King George County, December 3, 1738.

William(2) Triplett is described as "William Triplett, Senior" in a deed in King George Co., October 7, 1727, from David Stern to John Triplett (Deed Book I, page 458). William(2) Triplett was the son of "Mr. Francis(1) Triplett," the founder of the family in Virginia, who patented 1,050 acres of land in Richmond County in 1666.

William(3) Triplett probably removed from King George County before 1735, as there is a deed recorded in Orange County, August 18, 1735, from "Augustine Smith, Gentleman, of the Parish of St. Mark's, Orange County, to William Triplett, Gentleman, of Overwharton Parish, Stafford County, for 300 acres in the Parish of St. Mark's, Orange County" (Deed Book I, pp. 128, 130, Orange Co.).

These tracts of land originally in Spottsylvania County, were in Orange County when the latter was taken out of Spottsylvania County in 1734, and they were later in Culpeper County when that County was taken out of Orange County in 1748.

In a deed recorded in Culpeper County, July 19, 1753, from John Triplett to his brother Thomas Triplett, reference is made to the purchase of these tracts of "land of 515 acres and 300 acres, Nov. 6, 1733, and Aug. 18, 1735, from Augustine Smith by their father William Triplett late of the County of Prince William, who by his last will and testament, bearing date May 10, 1748, duly proved in Prince William County, did give and devise the said two tracts of land (now in Culpeper County) to his three sons, John, Thomas and Nathaniel Triplett." (Deed Book A, p. 528, Culpeper County.)

William Triplett was living on this land in 1740, in which year he was a Vestryman of St. Mark's Parish, Orange County, later Culpeper County (Bishop Meade's "Old Churches and Families," Vol. II, p. 77), and was also a vestryman in 1741, and was described in the records as "Captain William Triplett" (Dr. Slaughter's "History of St. Mark's Parish," Part I, pp. 8, 10).

William(3) Triplett became later a resident of Prince William County, as stated in the deed from his sons John and Thomas Triplett (July 19, 1753), cited above, and there is a deed in Prince William County, dated September 29, 1747, from "George Brent of Charles County, Maryland, Gentleman, to William Triplett of Prince William County, Gentleman," for 500 acres of land "on the southwest side of Quantico Creek next to the Potomac river." This land is now the site of the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks, Quantico, and on this land, as stated in the County record, Triplett lived the latter years of his life and probably died and was buried. (See a deed of Nathaniel Hedgman Triplett conveying to William Car, December 18, 1789, land owned by his grandfather William Triplett in Prince William County, and stating that Nathaniel Hedgeman Triplett reserved "one and one-half acres where his father and friends are buried. Deed Book X, p. 351. Deed Book U, p. 363.)

William(3) Triplett married Elizabeth Hedgman, daughter of Nathaniel Hedgman, of "Accokeek," Prince William County, and sister of Major Peter Hedgman. (snip)

William(3) Triplett mentions in his will, dated May 10, 1748, and proved in Prince William County, April 24, 1749, "my loving brother (brother-in-law) Major Peter Hedgman" as an executor, and mentions "my loving wife Betty Triplett." His children named in his will were James Triplett, Thomas Triplett (each of whom received 150 pounds by the will of their uncle, Peter Hedgman), Francis Triplett, John Triplett, Nathaniel Triplett, Daniel Triplett, William Triplett and daughters, Elizabeth Triplett and Sarah Triplett.

He bequeathed the two tracts of land, 515 acres and 300 acres in Culpeper County, to sons John, Thomas and Nathaniel; 423 acres "lying on Chappawamsic" to son, James, and if he died to son, Francis Triplett; 500 acres on Quantico Creek for the use of his wife during her lifetime and after her death to his son, William Triplett; mentions his "youngest children" under 21 years of age, namely, Nathaniel, John, Francis, Daniel, William.

There can be no doubt that Francis Triplett named in this will was Colonel Francis Triplett of Fauquier County. In proof of this fact it should be stated that:

(1) Colonel Francis Triplett was a "Volunteer in the Militia of Prince William County" in the French and Indian War, as stated in the official record (Journal of the House of Burgesses, April 28, 29, 1751), and this fact definitely connects him with Prince William County; also his name appears with that of "G. (George) Hedgman," son of Major Peter Hedgman, in an official paper of Washington. (See "Letters to Washington," edited by Hamilton, Vol. I, p. 340.)

(2) Colonel Francis Triplett married Benedicta Sennett, daughter of Robert Sennett, Senior, of Charles Co., Maryland. Colonel Francis Triplett named his eldest son, William, after his father; his second son, Hedgman, after his mother's family and his eldest daughter, Betty Hedgman, after his mother (see the will of Francis Triplett proved in Fauquier Co, January 26, 1795). The Fairfax County branch of the Triplett family were not connected by marriage or in any other way with the Hedgman family. The name Hedgman does not appear in that branch of the Triplett family. The name Hedgman appears only among the descendants of William Triplett of Prince William County and it was perpetuated by his posterity for several generations.

In his will, proved 26 January 1795, in Fauquier County, Virginia, he left 37,000 acres of land in the best section of Kentucky to his four sons and three daughters.

In his will, written in June 1762, and probated in Hanover County, Virginia, in February 1763, he named twelve children. Descendants lived in Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Texas, Illinois, Ohio, and elsewhere. Most descendants spelled their surname "Glenn." Hugh Jones was likely born ca. 1720 in Carmathenshire, Wales. He immigrated to America and lived in Maryland sometime prior to his move to St. Thomas Parish, Orange Co., Virginia ca. 1747. Hugh first married Elizabeth Foster ca. 1743. They were the parents of eight children. Elizabeth died ca. 1785 and Hugh maried Catey (surname unknown) ca. 1787. Hugh died 24 October 1791 in Orange Co., Virginia. Descendants lived in Virginia, North Carolina, Arkansas, Tennseess, Georgia, Louisiana and elsewhere. Morrison-Williams. William Mann Morrison, editor and publisher. 1989. 289p. Second edition, with revisions and many additions, of booklet published in 1977 in Atlanta, Georgia. "David and Robert Morrison were brothers-in-law, having married Sharpe sisters. They also might have been brothers or cousins"--P. 1. Earlier it was thought (but this now seems doubtful) they might have been descendants of William Morrison, who served in the Revolutionary War and was given a land grant in what became Sumner County, Tennessee. There is no absolute knowledge about David and Robert before they appeared on the tax list of Wilson County, Tennessee in 1806 and 1804 respectively, but they probably moved there from North Carolina. Rufus Adlai Morrison (1842-1921), grandson of David, married Mary Ann Williams in 1873, and moved from Tennessee to Red Oak, Latimer County, Oklahoma. This book includes other Morrisons in North Carolina and Tennessee, probably descendants of James Morrison, who immigrated from Scotland to northern Ireland about 1700 and immigrated about 1730 to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Descendants and relatives of Morrison and Williams families lived in Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, New York, Illinois, Missouri, Arkansas, Oklahoma, California, Washington and elsewhere. The Potts Branch of the Price Family Tree. Compiled by John Charles Price. Lucinda Potts (1828-1895) ws born in Wayne County, Ohio and died in Allendale, Illinois. She was the daughter of Jonathan Potts (born 1785 in Virginia) and Elizabeth Triplett. Potts ancestry is traced to Wales in the 17th century. She married John C. Price in 1848.
