Notes from "The Descendants of Richard Parr" by Perry
Louis Parr: Samuel Parr's name appears on the return of property
for Union Township, Fayette Co., PA, in 1785 and 1786. In the
first census of the U.S., 1790, he is shown as residing in Union
Twp., Fayette Co., and head of a family of two free white males
over the age of 16, one free white male under the age of 16, and
four free white females. He purchased 40 acres of land, called
"Wheatfield", "on the waters of Redstone Creek"
from John McClelland; this he sold to Benjamin Bowman for $400
by deed dated 16 Jul 1804. This deed was made by Samuel McClelland
as attorney for Samuel Parr. The deed giving power of attorney
to Samuel McClelland is dated 17 November 1802. Samuel Parr was
given a patent by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania dated 15 Jan
1802, to an 85-acre tract known as "Contentment" in
Union Twp., Fayette Co., Pa. This he also sold, to Benjamin Bowman,
for $850, by deed dated 17 Nov 1802. Both these deeds speak of
Samuel Parr and his wife Sarah, formerly of Union Twp., Fayette
Co., Pa., now of "Bolin Green Twp., Fairfield Co. in the
Territory Northwest of the River Ohio". Hill's History of
Licking Co., Ohio (which was formed from Fairfield Co.) states
that Samuel Parr was the first settler of Newark Twp., Licking
Co., and that he settled there in 1801, on the Licking Bottoms,
just below the junction of the North and South Forks of Licking
Creek. This spot proved to be unhealthy; the wheat was "sick".
He later moved to a farm about three miles south of Newark; he
purchased large tracts of land in that area. He built a fine brick
house on this farm. The house was still in use in 1942. Here he
spent the rest of his life. He died 5 Jul 1844 and was buried
in the Baptist Cemetery at Van Burentown. His wife, Sarah, was
born 16 Jun 1760 and died 29 Oct 1843. William Alva Parr, his
grandson, said that her maiden name was Leonard.
