E-mail from Randall Greenup. from Feb. 15 1969 letter to Mr. & Mrs. William Tyndall Greenup, son of Jason Greenup and Malinda Glover Ball from Ruth Ball Knapton, whose father was Howard Ball, son of James Glover Ball, son of John Ball and Nancy Glover.) - "In 1814 John our gr gr Grandfather married Melinda Genn a daughter of James Genn who surveyed thousands of acres of land for Lord Fairfax about 1748. George Washington who was about 16 at the time was in the surveying party and I have read several different times that James Genn taught him to survey. Celia Triplett was the daughter of William and Mary Triplett, an old Virginia family. Melinda was born in Virginia in 1794."

Thomas GENN (ante, xxvi. 196), the father of Samuel, Thomas, James and Josiah Genn, was located in Caroline Co., MD, on east bank of Choptank River, on a plantation called "Cape Ann." It was midway between Denton and Greensborough. He died about 1769. James, a brother of the elder Thomas, was located on the west side of Choptank River, about one mile above Greensborough, between.... (cut off)

John Smyth-7 (Edmund-6, Seth-5, Seth-4, John-3, Samuel-2, Ralph-1) born in Provincetown, MA, March 9, 1809; there married Mehitable Cook GHEN, daughter of Thomas GHEN and Sarah Cook, and granddaughter of Samuel Ghen and Sabra Cross of Truro. Samuel was a brother of Thomas and James GENN, or GENN, whose descendants now live at or near Bucksport, Me. The three brothers came from Virginia, where the family is quite numerous. Josias Cook, of Eastham, who married the widow Dean, was the ancestor of Sarah Cook.

Landmarks of Old Prince William by Fairfax Harrison
Pg. 507: James Genn was surveyor of Prince William and lived on the Falmouth road near the site of the modern village of Catletts, as shown on the survey of the Northern Neck boundary from the head spring of Conway to the head spring of Potomac. A year later he made the first survey of Lord Fairfax's South Branch Manor. The duty of the field party to which Washington was attached in 1748 was to subdivide that great boundary into lots, for seating.

Landmarks of Old Prince William by Fairfax Harrison:
Pg. 467: The plat drawn by Bertrand Ewell in April, 1759, to depict the survey of the boundary line then established between Prince William and Fauquier, supplemented by a land grant of 1747 to James Genn, that earlier official surveyor of Prince William who was George Washington's instructor in his profession, affords the key to the system of roads by which the piedmont of old Prince William was developed. This evidence indicates the junction, on the drains of Walnut Branch of Cedar Run, of three roads designated respectively "Quantico" (or Shenandoah); Falmouth and Rogues Road. The two last named represented together the original Iroquois trail to the falls of the Rappahannock (The Shenandoah Hunting Path) which, used in the reverse direction, had been Virginia's earliest access to this territory.

From Microsoft (R) Encarta: FAIRFAX, Thomas, 6th Baron Fairfax of Cameron (1693-1781), Scottish peer and Virginia landowner, born in Kent, England, and educated at the University of Oxford. He inherited from his mother, the daughter of Baron Thomas Colepeper, governor of Virginia, estates in Virginia constituting one-fourth of the entire colony. In 1735, when the possibility arose that the grant would be revoked by the Crown, Fairfax visited America, had the lands surveyed, and defended his claims, in which he was confirmed in 1745. He settled in Virginia in 1747 and built a home in the Shenandoah Valley on lands surveyed by George Washington. During the American Revolution, Fairfax remained a firm Loyalist.

Pg. 306: The Parishes and Their Churches: The Hamilton-Dettingen parish line was surveyed in June, 1745 by James GENN (the surveyor who in 1748 was the head of Lord Fairfax's corps in the Shenandoah Valley with which George Washington had his first engineering experience in the field) under the direction of George Byrn (see ante., p. 263), and their report and plat remains among the Prince William records.

Pg. 4: James Genn was, in 1748, the county surveyor of Prince William County, who lived on the Falmouth road some distance south of Neavil's. It was the rendezvous with him which determined the route via Neavil's. Genn was an experienced wilderness surveyor. In 1746 he had been engaged in the work of running the Northern Neck back line from the head spring of Conway (Rapidan) in the Blue Ridge to the head spring of Potomac in the Alleghanies, and in 1747, he had surveyed Lord Fairfax's South Branch and Greenway Court Manors. It was to subdivide the former into lots to be leased to tenants that the present expedition was on foot.

This indenture made the twenty ninth day of September one thousand seven hundred and ninety two between the reverend Denny Fairfax lately called Denny Martin of Leeds Castle, County of Kent and Kingdom of Great Britain D.D. a devisee and legatee named in the last will and testament of the Right Honorable Thomas Lord Fairfax Baron of Cameron in that part of Great Britain called Scotland and proprietor of the Northern Neck of Virginia, deceased, by Thomas Bryan Martin Esq. of Greenway Court, County of Frederick and State of Virginia of the one part and James Genn of Fauquier County in the said State of the other part. Whereas the said Denny Fairfax by his letter or power of Attorney dated the seventh day of November one thousand seven hundred and eighty three and duly and legally proved before Nathaniel Nimham Esq. Lord Mayor of the City of London and certified by him under the Seal of the Office of Majority of the said City, the eighth day of the same month of November did authorize and empower his brother, the said Thomas Bryan Martin, among other things to lease out his lands in the said State of Virginia so devised to him by his uncle the said Thomas Lord Fairfax, deceased, on such rents, covenants and terms as he the same Thomas Bryan Martin should think reasonable and necessary, and upon payment of such rents or any part thereof, to give acquaintances and discharges for the same and upon nonpayment thereof to make distress or to sue for implead or prosecute the several defaulters to Judgment and execution, as by the said letter or power of attorney now in the possession of the said Thomas Bryan Martin may more fully and at large appear. Now this indenture witnesseth that the said Denny Fairfax by his attorney aforesaid for and in consideration of the rents and covenants hereafter mentioned hath demised, granted and to farm letter (?) and by these presents doth demise grant and to farm let unto the said James Genn, all that piece, parcels and lot of land No. 73 in the County of Fauquier, being part of the manor of Leeds and bounded as by a survey thereof lately made by George Hume as follows beginning at live red and white oaks corner to lot No. 72, one red oak numbered 73 thence N60 E200 poles to two red oaks and white oak on a parcel of Rocks on the foot of the rattle snake mountain, thence N40 W160 (Poles to two red oaks by a branch, thence S60 W200 poles to live red oaks and hickory on the side of a mountain corner to lot No. 72 thence with a line of that lot S40 E160 Poles to the beginning containing two hundred acres. To have and to hold the said two hundred acres of land to the said James Genn his heirs executors administrators or assigns, for and during the natural lives of him said James, Selia his wife and Nancy his daughter, to commence from the 15th of April last; he the said James Genn his heirs executors, administrators or assigns, yielding and paying to the said Denny Fairfax or his attorney aforesaid, his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns, the yearly rent of fifty shillings current money of the State of Virginia and also pay or cause to be paid unto the said Denny Fairfax or his attorney aforesaid or to the person or persons appointed by law to receive the same and at the time for the payment of the present. Assessments or land tax and all other future assessments of land taxes or other taxes, either ordinary or extraordinary that shall or may be laid on the said land or any thereof by the general assembly of the State of Virginia or other legal authority during the said term.
And further the said James Genn for himself, his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns doth covenant and grant to and with the said Denny Fairfax, his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns by his attorney aforesaid, that he the said James Genn his heirs, executors, administrators and assigns will pay or cause to be paid all charges and expenses attending or accruing for surveying the said lot No. 73 the drawing the lease and recording the same and that he the said James Genn, his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns, shall not put on the said Lot No. 73 or any part thereof any sub or under tenants, without the leave or license of the said Denny Fairfax or his attorney aforesaid or work any more persons or hands on the same lot than four. And further the said James Genn for himself his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns doth covenant and agree to and with the said Denny Fairfax by his attorney aforesaid, his executors, administrators or assigns that he will with all expedition, erect and build on the said lot of ground No. 73 of 200 Acres one dwelling house twenty feet long and sixteen feet wide with a brick or stone chimney to the same and keep the same in good and tenantable repair and leave the same in such good repair at the expiration of the said term. And further the said James Genn doth covenant and agree to and with the said Denny Fairfax by his attorney aforesaid, his heirs, executors, administrators, assigns, that he will with all expedition, raise and plant an orchard of one hundred apple trees and plant the same at least thirty feet as under and keep the same well trimmed and fenced for and during the said term and leave the same in good order and well enclosed at the expiration thereof. And further the said James Genn doth covenant and grant to and with the said Denny Fairfax, by his attorney aforesaid, his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns, not to waste unnecessarily destroy, dispose of any timber growing upon the said land, but only to make necessary use of the same for the benefit of the said Plantation and premises. And further that if the said James Genn, his heirs, executors, administrators, or assigns shall at any one time for the space of two whole years fail in the payment of the rent herein before reserved, or any part thereof, or in the performance of all or any of the covenants herein before contained, then it shall and may be lawful for the said Denny Fairfax, by his attorney aforesaid, his heirs, executors, administrators or assigns, to reenter the land and premises hereby leased, and be in the actual possession of the same to all intents and purposes as if this had never been made. In witness whereof both parties, the said Denny Fairfax, by his attorney aforesaid and the said James Genn have hereunto set their hands and seals the day and year before written.

This indenture made this fifteenth day of October in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Ten between James Genn and Celia his wife of the County of Nelson and State of Kentucky of the one part and Flora McGarvey, widow of John McGarvey deceased and Eleanor McGarvey and Elizabeth McGarvey heirs of said John McGarvey deceased of the County aforesaid of the other part witnesseth that the said James Genn and Celia his wife for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred dollars current money of the United States of America to them in hand paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged have granted bargained and sold and by these presents do grant bargain and sell and release and convey until the said Flora, Eleanor and Elizabeth, their heirs and assigns forever a certain tract or parcel of land situated lying and being in the County of Nelson aforesaid and on the South side of Salt River containing one hundred and forty acres being the same more or less and is the same tract conveyed by William Basey and wife to the said Genn by deed bearing date the 14th day of November 1797 and bounded as follows beginning at a Buckeye and honey locust on the bank of Salt River and upper corner of a four hundred acre tract purchased by said Basey of Andrew Vaughan running thence south 30 degrees west 80 poles to a white oak and two hickories near a path thence south 89 degrees west 50 poles to a walnut hickory and beech thence north 32 degrees. West 200 poles to two sugar trees thence north 30 degrees east 140 poles to an ash, red oak and beech on the bank of Salt River thence up the same with its several courses two hundred and ten poles to the beginning excluding eight acres and a half of said tract h? of the conveyed by said Genn to David Swope to have and to hold the said tract or parcel of land with all the appurtenances unto the said Eleanor, Flora and Elizabeth their heirs and assigns to their only proper use benefit and behoove forever and the said James Genn, Celia his wife, for themselves, their heirs, executors and administrators do covenant and agree with the said Flora, Eleanor and Elizabeth and heirs and assigns, that they shall and will warrant and forever defend the said tract or parcel of land with all the appurtenances unto the said Flora, Eleanor and Elizabeth's heirs as aforesaid their heirs and assigns against all and every person or persons whosoever lawfully deeming or to claim the same excluding eight acres and half of said land conveyed as aforesaid. This doesn't fit very well to known facts. Nancy would probably be over 19 and Celia would be about 19. Celia's age is based on obituary and Nancy was shown on 1792 map listing above. Three other daughters named on will were Charlotte, Eunice, Melitta. Who are all these boys?

This indenture made this ninth day of December in the year of our Lord eighteen hundred and sixteen between Flora McGarvey widow and Elmer McGarvey and Elizabeth McGarvey daughters above the age of twenty-one years of John McGarvey deceased and his only children of Nelson County and State of Kentucky of the one part and the heirs of James Ginn deceased of the other part (to wit) Nancy Ginn, Abner Goodwin and Charlotty his wife, John Glover and Melinda his wife, Eunice Ginn and Melitta Ginn, all of the same county and state except sd. Glover and his who are of the state of Indiana. Witnesseth that in consequence of our exchange of land made between the said John McGarvey decd. and James Ginn decd. in their lifetime and the said Ginn having conveyed to the sd. McGarvey and his heirs being fully satisfied and the said McGarvey having ony conveyed a part and there being fifty acres yet to convey the said Flora, Elenor and Elizabeth McGarvey doth hereby confirm said contract and request all their rights title and interest of sd. fifty acres of land with all its appurtances unto the said heirs of James Ginn decd. which land is bounded as follows .... <snip>

On the motion of Abner Goodwin, adm. of James Ginn decd, ordered that Abner King and Richard Dodd do examine estate and settle the accounts of the said adm'r and return the settlement to the next term of this court.

In obedience to an order of the worshipful court of Nelson County made at their Feb. Term 1817 we whose names are undersigned met and proceeded to make the following settlement with Abner Goodwin administrator of James Ginn decd. on the 28th day of June 1817.
The amount of sales of the personal estate as produced to us on the original sale list - 155.40-1/2
The amount of debts due to the estate as stated to us -- 233.50
The amount of the sale of land which was sold at the same time that the personal estate was sold which was done by the consent and request of all the heirs of sd. decd. 280

Which we subtract from the total of estate which leaves the next estate at 583.70-3/4

It may be observed in the foregoing settlement that the date and amount of voucher 13 and 14 differs a little as to amount and considerably as to date in our settlement it may be proper to observe that W. Goodwin had not obtained that voucher but stated the amount as entered and as it would make a charge in the statement from that voucher down through the whole of the work for 10-1/2 cents we thought it as well to state it in this way. February 7th 1818
