RICHARDSON FAMILY DAWES APPLICATIONS |
Part 1 |
Some of you probably already know this, but while doing my research, I have found that my family has many RICHARDSON Family connections in my ancestry, either through direct or by marriages through the many generations in the Warren and Halifax County areas. Recently, thanks to the generous help and contributions of Marty Richardson who sent copies of the Dawes Commission for some of the families who applied for membership in the Cherokee Nation in 1896, I have been able to fill in a lot of holes and cleared up some family relationships from the information included in those applications. There are actually several sets of petitions included in this collection; the records that follow are for a group who sent in applications in different packages for RICHARDSON, LYNCH and EVANS, but not limited to those surnames. In addition to the petitions, there was an extensive RICHARDSON FAMILY CHART included with their Applications, and while not entirely accurate about their oldest known ancestor, which incorrectly shows as John Richardson, where it should say Benjamin Richardson, it does provide much additional information not previously known through any of the records I had seen. For those who don't know, Benjamin Richardson's will and Revolutionary War Pension file contains the names of most of his children, and so one can tell by the CHART that those same names are the ones incorrectly listed as from John Richardson. Perhaps it was a confused remembrance of the name of the man who may have been Benjamin's father, after all, that has been something that has been elusive and controversial to researchers for many years. Indeed, the possibility of Benjamin's father being named "John" would be consistent when one sees from these records that was the name given to who appears to be Ben's oldest son, John Richardson. Some of the things these records reveal is the maiden names of Hardy Richardson's wife, Darcas (Boone); of Absalom Richardson's wife, Rhoda (Morgan); the name of the wife of Benjamin Richardson's son, James Richardson (Patty Nazary), as well as identifies their children; and much, much more about the family relationships with the SILVER, LYNCH, EVANS and DALES families, with some surprising revelations about the identities of several EVANS families. These following transcriptions are from the actual copies of the petitions, some of them I have added notes for clarification. While all of these were Rejected, most of the persons or their descendants, later went on to form the Haliwa-Saponi Tribe in North Carolina. More about the Tribe can be read starting here:
