The Story of Thomas Green of Warren County, Former Slave
Part 3 of 3
LUCRETIA GREEN, born abt. 1788, died between 1860-1870 Warren Co.,NC. She was a major part of the family's history since she was the
"mother" of two different lines started with the marriages of two of her daughters, yet she is less well known than some of her siblings by the family.
LUCRETIA, most often called "CREASY", probably named after her grandmother, was the youngest child of TOM & PRISCILLA at the time of the death of
SAMUEL WILLIAMS in 1791. By the time that freedom was granted to the family in 1798, there were apparently additional children which had been born
into the family, but CREASY was the last of those that were named in the official records at that time. She became the 2nd wife of
ARCHIBALD EVANS
(1793-1860/70) in 1823, whose previous marriage was to ANNA MASON in 1815 Granville Co., NC, with whom he had at least one son named JAMES EVANS (b. 1815),
who married ALLEN GREEN's daughter, MARTHA. ARCHIBALD & LUCRETIA GREEN- EVANS
probably had more children than I know, but the only ones I've positively identified are:
1) JANE
EVANS (1824-bef 1900) married WILLIAM TONEY (1804- bef 1900) son of JOHN TONEY & MARTHA CARPENTER,
of Halifax Co., NC. JOHN TONEY (1750-1823) served in the Revolutionary
War and he left a will, both of which helped identify most members of his family.
WILLIAM & JANE's 6 children: a] PRISCILLA TONEY (1843-1902), mar: HENRY
EATON CARTER, son of HAWKINS CARTER & ELIZABETH WIGGINS. Had 11 children.
b] LUCY TONEY (1844-bef 1880) mar: MOSES ALLEN WILLIAMS, son of ALLEN
WILLIAMS & SUSAN WILLIAMS. Had 3 children. LUCY also had a daughter with
JOHN HAYWOOD CAUDLE, who was named RHODA TONEY, b.1859. c] MARIAH
TONEY (1846-1941) mar: ELLINGTON SCOTT, son of PETER SCOTT & FANNIE DALES;
they had 12 children. d] ELIZABETH TONEY (1847-bef 1888) mar: HAWKINS
CARTER JR. son of HAWKINS CARTER & ELIZABETH WIGGINS. They had 8 children.
e] REBECCA JANE TONEY (1849-bef 1895) mar: JACOB TAYLOR, son of JERRY &
DOLLY TAYLOR. They had 7 children. f] WILLIAM J. TONEY (1855-aft
1925) mar: VINEY PERRY, dau/of DOCTOR PERRY & JULIA DAVIS. They had 3
children.
2) MARY POLLY EVANS (1826-1908 Warren Co.,NC) married in 1845 to JOHN HAYWOOD CAUDLE (1821-1898) son of WILLIAM RICHARD CAUDLE & RHODA ____
(whose origins are a mystery in itself), and they were the origins of the CAUDLE/CORDELL families of color in the area. JOHN & MARY had 11 children, most of
whom lived in Warren Co., but who also spread out to the surrounding Counties of Halifax, Nash, Wake, Hertford, & Wayne, as well as beyond. They also
started spelling the surname in a variety of ways- CAUDLE, CORDELL, CORDLE, CORDEL, CARDELL- but no matter how they spell it, they all come from the same
couple in Warren County, North Carolina. Their children were: a] LUCRETIA
CAUDLE (1848-????; mar: EZEKIAH WILLIAMS, son of ISRAEL & PARTHENIA
WILLIAMS). b] ARCHIBALD CAUDLE (1849-abt 1883) mar: SARAH _____; had 2
children. c] WILLIAM THOMAS CAUDLE (1850-1917) mar: TEMPIE WILLIAMS,
dau/of DICK WILLIAMS & CHARITY CLANTON; had 7 children. d] SUSANNA PARTHENIA
CAUDLE (1852-1920, known as THENY MITCHELL in our family history) mar. 1st:
PETER WILLIAMS, son of DICK WILLIAMS & CHARITY CLANTON; mar. 2nd: WILSON
MITCHELL, son of STEPHEN HARVEY & FANNY MITCHELL. THENY had no children.
e] MARTHA A. CAUDLE (1853-1926; mar: JAMES A. EVANS, son of JAMES EVANS &
MARTHA GREEN. Had 5 children). f] RICHARD HENRY CORDELL (1854-1930)
mar: JULIA ANN MILLS, dau/of DAVID MILLS & LOUISA JANE SPEARS. Had 5
children. g] MARY CAUDLE (1856-abt 1875) mar: PETER WILLIAMS,
son of DICK WILLIAMS & CHARITY CLANTON; sister, THENY, married PETER after
MARY's death. h] HAYWOOD CAUDLE (1857-bef 1870; died as a child).
i] BETSY CAUDLE (1858-1880) probably died of consumption since the 1880
census shows her having it. j] SOLOMON CAUDLE (1859-bef 1940) mar:
CORENNA NEWELL, dau/of slaveowner LEMUEL NEWELL & former slave, MELISSA
NEWELL. Had 10 children. k] JOHN W. CAUDLE (1862-abt 1880).
Two other children who were living with ARCHIBALD & LUCRETIA in 1850 who
appear to be too young to be theirs, however, I do
believe they were their grandchildren, although I don't know for sure who their parents were; it is possible their mother was either another daughter who
died prior to 1850, or even possibly the mother was MARY POLLY EVANS. I
include them under the children of ARCHIBALD & LUCRETIA since they do belong
in the family anyway. The children were:
3) JOHN EVANS (1840- abt. 1888 Nash Co.,NC) married in 1858 to his 2nd or 3rd
cousin, PRISCILLA EVANS-WEST (1834-abt. 1888) daughter of ISAAC EVANS-WEST & WINIFRED DALES. PRISCILLA's family has a wonderful history to tell also, which
I have related in several different places, but which I will make a focus of on this site, too. The bondsman to JOHN & PRISCILLA's marriage was JOHN HAYWOOD
CAUDLE, husband of MARY POLLY EVANS, and interestingly enough, JOHN & PRISCILLA's oldest child was named MARY; this could be an indication that JOHN was
MARY's son, or at the very least, that there was a close relationship. Most
of their children disappear from records after 1880, and I don't know much
about them. Their 8 children were: a] MARY E. EVANS (1859-????).
b] ISAAC NEWTON EVANS (1861-????). c] JOHN THOMAS EVANS
(1864-aft 1930) 1st mar: MALISSA CARTER, dau/of HAWKINS CARTER JR. &
ELIZABETH TONEY; they had 4 children. 2nd mar: POLLY JANE PERRY, dau/of
SILVIA PERRY; they had 11 children. d] JAMES H. EVANS (1868-????).
e] ELIAS EVANS (1870-aft 1940) 1st mar: SNEDIE ANN BODDIE, dau/of
MAJOR & MANDIE BODDIE. They had 9 children. 2nd mar: SARAH THROWER,
dau/of WILLIAM THROWER & SUSAN LAWRENCE. SARAH was a widow, who already had
about 4 children when she married ELIAS, but she didn't have any children
with him. f] IDA EVANS (1874-1948) 1st mar: BILLIE WILKINS, son of
WELDON & VIRGINIA WILKINS. 2nd mar: WILLIAM TILLERY, son of MELISSA
TILLERY. g] LARRY EVANS (1875-????). h] ANNA EVANS
(1877-????).
4) SALLY EVANS, born 1841, only appears in the 1850 Census as 9 years old, and she
doesn't appear in any other Census, nor have I found a marriage record for her. I suspect that she died shortly after 1850, since I have not seen any
indication of her anywhere else.
LEMUEL GREEN, (a.k.a. SAMUEL GREEN) born abt
1795, died about 1835, first appeared in the 1820 Census in Warren Co. one house away
from ALLEN GREEN. I believe he was a son of THOMAS GREEN since that household had gone from 11 Other Free in 1810 to a total of 10 by 1820; also of note is
that while SAMUEL was not in the census after 1830, he was apparently a married man with children in the 1820 & 1830 census, however I haven't found any
marriage records that I think could be him. One person who I know was his daughter was EMILY GREEN (1820-1870/1880) whose age & location fits
LEMUEL's
census records, and she first appears in the November 1833 Court Records when she was bonded out to JOHN. H. HAWKINS
until age 18, where it specifically identified her as a daughter of LEMUEL
GREEN. It wasn't until November 1837 when EMILY reached age 18, the
age when her original apprenticeship was supposed to end, that a new order
was made which said specifically that LEMUEL GREEN was deceased. Later records show that she was the mother of several illegitimate children, including the
oldest named SAMUEL GREEN (1841-bef 1880) probably named after his grandfather,
who along with his brother, HENRY were first recorded in an 1848
Apprenticeship Bond, which also included their ages. The father of her
1st two sons, SAMUEL & HENRY, was indicated to be ISAAC HAWKINS on both of their
marriage records; it is very likely he was related to JOHN H. HAWKINS.
a] SAMUEL married in 1868
to SUSAN WILLIAMS, dau/of PHILIP & PHATHY WILLIAMS. They didn't have any
children. EMILY's other children were: b] HENRY GREEN (1842-????) 1st mar:
LUVENIA ____; they had 6 children. 2nd mar: HARRIETT WATKINS (dau/of HULDAH
WATKINS). c] ISAAC J. GREEN (1845-????). d] MARY GREEN
(1847-????), mar: HENRY DAVIS, son of WINDSOR & LAVINIA DAVIS. e] REBECCA
L. GREEN (1853-????) mar: THOMAS M. JOHNSON, son of WILLIAM MITCHELL JOHNSON
& ROSETTA JONES. They moved to Washington D.C. shortly after their 1874
marriage, and they and their 5 children lived there and Virginia, for the
most part. f & g] EMILY's last 2 children were SALLY & ALLIE
GREEN. I haven't located further records on the girls.
PRISCILLA GREEN, born abt. 1796, died after 1880, was
probably named after TOM's wife, PRISCILLA. She married in 1826 to SAMUEL
LOWERY (1785- abt. 1835). PRISCILLA was widowed early in life, leaving her with a houseful of young children, which she raised mostly on her own. On top of
that, she also was left to raise her grandchildren by her oldest daughter, SABRINA. SAMUEL & PRISCILLA's children were:
1) SABRINA LOWERY (1826-abt 1865), probably named
after her aunt, BRENY GREEN,
was married in 1850 to MATTHEW GUY (1823- abt 1865); their children who were raised first by their grandmother, then by their aunts & uncles
who mostly moved to Lenoir Co., NC by the mid-1800s, were: a] ALICE GUY
(1855-????). b] WILLIAM E. GUY (1856-bef 1896) mar: LAVINIA THORNE dau/of
FANNY D. THORNE. LAVINIA married 3 more times, but she & WILLIAM had 2
children who survived to adulthood. c]
LUCINDA LUCRETIA GUY (1858-????). d] MITTIE GUY (1860-????). e] JAMES HENRY
GUY (1862-1927 Kinston, NC) 1st mar: ADLENA TILLERY, dau/of CORNELIUS
TILLERY & ALBERTA TILLERY; 2 children. 2nd mar: MYRTLE FARMER, dau/of
ALEXANDER FARMER & LELIA EVANS. f] PARTHENIA GUY (1864-????)
mar: CHARLES P. SHEARIN son of JESSE & CLARICY SHEARIN. g] GEORGIANNA GUY
(1865-1932 Boston, MA) mar: MACK WHITFIELD. In 1904, most of the
surviving family were summoned to Kinston, Lenoir County, NC, for the
settlement of the estate of WILEY LOWERY, who was fairly well-off. It was
through those records that I found that many of them had moved to the
Northeast.
2) LUCRETIA LOWERY (1828-1917 Lenoir Co., NC), married in 1859 to WILLIAM WRIGHT
(b.1839-bef 1880), they had no children but LUCRETIA was widowed early, and she spent many years with her sister, SABRINA's children, who had moved to Kinston,
Lenoir Co.,NC.
3) ZEDON LOWERY, born 1830, was a blacksmith, but I haven't found anything on him after 1850.
4) JAMES A. LOWERY (1831-1900 New Hanover
Co., NC), became a wheelwright & coachmaker, moved around NC a lot, and
ended up in Kinston, Lenoir County, although he did have homes in both
Wilmington and in Kinston. He married in 1864 New Hanover Co.,
NC to MARGARET WINGATE (b. 1831), and had no children. JAMES did have
children however, with a long-time mistress, CATHERINE McCOY, more often
called KATE, of Wilmington, New Hanover Co, NC, who
also had several other children. I don't know for sure how many of KATE's
children were fathered by JAMES, but I do know of 3 who carried the LOWERY
surname, and named them as their parents in their own records HATTIE B.
LOWERY, b. 1874, LILLIE ANN LOWERY, b. 1886 & WILEY HENRY LOWERY, b.
1887. It's sad, but while his wife MARGARET was alive at the time of his
death, he did not even mention her in his will, where he left his property
to CATHERINE and to HATTIE. His brother, WILEY preceded him in death, and
JAMES was the administrator of his estate in 1897. A newspaper story in that
year described how JAMES had also suffered from a stroke in the early part
of that year, but had recovered enough by November to do some work at his
place of business. JAMES was a successful businessman, his coachmaking
company had made him a well-known man, and he was frequently in the
newspapers. Which is probably why it is no surprise that his relatives did
not sit still when they found out upon the reading of his will, that he had
given the property that he had inherited from his brother, WILEY, to
his mistress and her family. All of his nieces and nephews that he & his
brother had raised, as well as his surviving sister, LUCRETIA, petitioned
the court for shares of his property.
5) NANCY LOWERY (1832- aft 1880) married in
Dec. 1868 to HENRY SOUTHERLAND (1847-1872/1880) son of SANDY CHEEK and JANE SOUTHERLAND.
They had one child, VIRGINIA SOUTHERLAND, b. 1872, although I haven't found
her after 1880 when she was living with her mother.
6) WILEY LOWERY, a.k.a. WILLIAM LOWERY (b. 1834, d.
March 31, 1897 Kinston, Lenoir Co, NC) was apprenticed as WILLIAM LOWERY in
1844 to his Grandfather, THOMAS GREEN, to learn to be a farmer; he appeared
in the 1850 Census with his mother and sisters. As WILIE, he purchased small
tracts of land in Warrenton in 1858 & 1859, the name or variations of it,
was how he was known thereafter. He was married in 1860 to WINNIE TANN (b. 1837) daughter of CHERRY TANN of Northampton Co., NC.
WILEY ended up being the guardian to many of his nieces & nephews,
including the children of his sister, SABRINA. He & WINNIE
don't appear to have had any children of their own, although they did always have a houseful with the GUY and the LOWERY children living with them in
Kinston, Lenoir Co., NC, where he was a prosperous grocery merchant after having started out as a stone mason in Warren County.
He didn't leave a will, but there is quite an extensive Estate file for him
in Lenoir County which states that he died there in March 31, 1897. Although
he didn't have any children with his wife, WILEY had at least 3 children
with a mistress, PHILLIS COX, who also lived in Kinston. The children were:
WILLIAM HENRY LOWERY (1871-1836) never married; JAMES ALEXANDER LOWERY
(1874-1937) mar: IRENE OLIVIA JENNINGS (dau/of ALLEN ROBERT JENNINGS & ANNIE
MARY ____), they had 8 children; and HATTIE COX LOWERY (1879-1927) mar:
JESSE CANADY (son of ABRAHAM CANADY & JANE WHITE). No children.
When WILEY's widow WINNIE, filed for her year's allowance from her late
husband's estate, it was found there was a deficiency in the amount of the
assets, but she did receive a portion that was due to her as according to
law. WILEY owned several buildings and parcels of land in Kinston, which
were apparently of great value because his brother JAMES and their surviving
sister, LUCRETIA WRIGHT, along with his nephews, nieces and great nephews,
showed up with petitions they filed in order to receive shares of his
property. Most of them were living in Virginia and in Boston, so they had
traveled from their homes to make sure that they were heard. And it
continued on again, when a couple of years later at the time of the death of
WILEY's brother, JAMES, who had left a will, gave the property to his own
mistress and her family. I guess no bad deed goes unpunished because the
nephews and nieces did win the case.
MARY POLLY GREEN, born 1800, and ELIZABETH GREEN, born 1805, both sisters never married, and they remained in the same house that they
had grown up in as children until their own deaths in the 1870's. POLLY and BETT, as they were known, were the family members mostly associated and known as
being the daughters of "old TOM GREEN", because they never moved away from their home, while the rest of the family were long gone or had families of their
own by the mid-1800's. Neither woman left any children.
LUCY GREEN, born 1810, does not appear anywhere after the 1850 Census and I believe she died shortly afterwards.
NANCY GREEN, born 1815, was the youngest daughter of THOMAS & PRISCILLA GREEN, and the last of his children to get married. She
married on January 17, 1854 to AMOS ARTIS, who was born in Wayne Co.,NC in 1829. His parents, REUBEN PETTIFORD and JULIA ARTIS, were apparently not
married, but they had several children, most of whom alternated in using the surname of ARTIS and PETTIFORD. The PETTIFORD men were rock masons or stone
cutters, and traveled around the State to wherever the work was in the building trade, and most of them finally settled down in Washington Co., NC after the
Civil War. AMOS & NANCY don't seem to have had any children of their own, although there was a 10 year old female living with them in 1860, listed only as
"C. PETTIFORD", whose identity I have never found out. End See:
