Weatherby, Clyde L.

The Hamilton Herald-News 05/25/2000

Clyde Weatherby, a true man of honor, joined his Lord on Friday, May 19, 2000, following a short illness. He was born in Goldthwaite on Aug. 22, 1911 to Walter J. and Clara O'Quin Weatherby. He was devoted to God, his family and friends, the Methodist Church and his

country; He attended the University of Texas and was a member of Delta Sigma Phi Fraternity and The Cowboys. After leaving the university, he returned to Goldthwaite and worked in the family Ford dealership and ranching business. Then in 1935 he bought his own Ford dealership in Hamilton.

On Christmas day, 1935 he married his sweetheart, Greta Little. They shared the following 64 years together and were blessed with two daughters, Ann and Nan. Nan preceded him in death in 1974. Clyde was a respected businessman and leader in the Hamilton community and the First Methodist Church. He loved the land, enjoyed golf and loved to dance. Most of all he loved to dance with his sole mate, Greta and dream dreams and talk about them with friends or family over a cup of coffee. Clyde was an entrepreneur long before the word became popular. During his 22 years as a Ford dealer, he owned several other businesses. The list includes a radio station, KCLW (Clyde L. Weatherby) that has now been on the air for 52 years, the first television station in Waco, KANG for Ann, Nan and Greta and even an Edsel dealership.

Clyde and Greta fell in love with Austin while attending UT and hoped to return someday. In 1959, they did just that. They received Real Estate Brokers licenses and established Clyde Weatherby Real Estate, primarily brokering farms, ranches and commercial properties until the late 1980s. In 1974, Clyde and a small group of Austin friends bought the Chevy Chase National Bank that became Chase National Bank at Anderson Lane and Georgian Drive. He was elected to the board of directors and in 1976 was elected "temporary" president. The term "temporary" soon disappeared and he served as president until June of 1984. While he was president the bank sold, this time to Frost Bank of San Antonio.

During Clyde's life he served in many organizations and was honored to serve on many boards including Frost Bank and the Board of Directors of the Texas Methodist Foundation from 1984 to 1996. He was also a Shriner. Clyde was a member of University United Methodist Church, The Men's Sunday School Class and the Couples Plus Class. He served the church in several positions, especially his example of faithfulness.

Clyde's life is best described by a long time friend when he said, "I could name many other fine traits of character that belong to Clyde, but one of the reasons for my liking him is because of his friendly manner, his gentleness and his loyalty and love for his family and friends."

He is survived by his wife and constant companion, Greta; sister, Billie Ledbetter; daughter and son-in-law Ann and Brian deGraffenried; granddaughter and husband, Julie and Mike Early and children David and Timothy; step-granddaughter, Susan deGraffenried and children Brian and Casey Sumner; step-grandson and wife Les and Katie deGraffenried and children Tess and Drew and nephew and wife Jamie and Pam Ledbetter.

The funeral service was held at the Weed-Corley-Fish Chapel at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2000. Visitation with Greta and the family was at 2 p.m. preceding the service. Rev. J. Charles Merrill and Rev. David Minnich of University United Methodist Church officiated.

Graveside services will be in Goldthwaite on Saturday, May 27 at 2 p.m. at the Goldthwaite Memorial Cemetery with Rev. Sidney Roberts, Rev. Jack Riley and Rev. Tom Loftin presiding.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to the employees of Marriott Brighton Gardens of Austin, Texas, for their loving care for both Clyde and Greta.

Memorial contributions may be made to University United Methodist Church, 2409 Guadalupe Street, Austin, TX 78705; The Texas Methodist Foundation, 11709 Boulder Lane, Austin, Texas 78726; or the charity of one's choice.

WEST, LINDA K.

The Hamilton Herald-News, March 18, 2004

Linda K. West, a lawyer and a romance novelist whose most recent pen name was Dixie Kane, died March 8, 2004 of cancer at Lakeview Regional Hospital in Covington, La. She was 66.

Ms. West was born in Hamilton, the daughter of Billy and Mildred Martin West and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lee West.

Her love of books grew out of a nomadic childhood, during which she lived in several states and attended 13 elementary schools.

“I made up happy endings for books that ended tragically,” Ms. West said in an online biography. “I added new chapters to books I never wanted to end.” Ms. West wrote 10 novels, including “Dreaming of You,” Chas-ing Lily” and “Making Merry.” She was a finalist for the Romance Writers of America’s Golden Heart Award and the National Readers Choice Award.

She was “a fabulously energetic and inspiring woman,” said writer and friend Nancy Wagner, director of the paralegal studies program at Tulane University College’s New Orleans campus. Ms. West was a graduate of the University of Texas and received a law degree from Southern Methodist University. She served in the Peace Corps and as a legislative aide for the Texas Legislature.

She was awarded a fellowship at Northwestern School of Law in Chicago and was one of the first female public defenders in Cook County, Ill.

She served as a prosecutor under U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter when he was assistant attorney general in Pennsylvania.

Ms. West moved to New Orleans in 1977. She lived in the French Quarter and on the West Bank before moving to Mandeville.

She retired in 2000 from the Internal Revenue Service, where she was a special litigation attorney. “You don’t expect an IRS attorney to write laugh-out-loud romances, but she did,” said friend and local writer Metsy Hingle.

Ms. West’s sister, Candace “Candy” Diano, said her sister became hooked on romance novels after cleaning out the paperback section at the Royal Pharmacy, across the street from her home in the French Quarter. The books in-spired her to take a creative writing class at the University of New Or-leans, and five years later she sold her novel to Silhouette Books. Wagner recalled Ms. West’s “time-management” writing routine before heading off to work as an attorney.

“She rose an hour early, got dressed in her suit, and then sat down at her computer where she’d write for 45 minutes every morning Monday through Friday,” Wagner said. Diano said she helped her sister choose the pen name Dixie Kane. “I went to the pantry and spotted some Dixie crystal sugar,” Diano said. “It was pure cane sugar, and we just changed the ‘c’ to a ‘k.’”

Survivors include Diano, of Mandeville, a half-sister, Mary Jane Reinach of Kentucky and her aunt and surrogate mother, Opal West of Plano.

Plans for memorial service are incomplete, Diano said.
