Robert Elwood Chesley of Ojai (California)
died May 5, 2003. A memorial service was held May 10 in the outdoor chapel of The Thacher School.
He was born in Hamilton on April 23, 1932, the son of Joseph Theodore and Lois Cameron Chesley. After the death of his father, Mr. Chesley moved to Ojai Valley at the age of 16 to attend the Thacher School. He later received a B.S. in physics and an M.A. in education from Stanford University. While at Stanford, he met and married Alice McKinney with whom he raised a family and shared a love for friends, travel and life.
After a short stint in the Army, he returned to The Thacher School in 1957 to teach physics and math.
Mr. Chesley enjoyed astronomy, photography, the outdoors, flying and ham radio. As his experience in education grew, Mr. Chesley expanded his horizons in conjunction with Harvard Project Physics.
He worked for the Department of Education in Washington, D.C. beginning in 1970, ultimately managing The Education Research Information Center.
In 1983 he returned again to the Ojai Valley as Business Manager of The Thacher School. After retirement, he pursued his love of flight and built his own airplane, which he first flew in 1999.
He belonged to the Ojai Rotary Club and served on the Boards of The Ojai Valley School and C.R.E.W.
He is preceded in death by his son Michael.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Alice; two sons, John and Matthew; a daughter-in-law, Julie and grandchildren, Peyton, Michael and Cole. Clausen Funeral Home
