"In 1879 Newt Clabaugh settled in this community betweenPottsvilleand GentrysMill. He built the first school and named it Tonkawa,
because, he said, the people around acted like Tonkawas, a tribe of
Indians. Tonkawa was about ten miles west of Hamilton.
The school later moved to the Comanche road. The TonkawaIndians
were the fiercest known."
