TONKAWA

TONKAWA. "In 1879 Newt Clabaugh settled in this community between Pottsville and Gentrys Mill. He built the first school and named it Tonkawa, because, he said, the people around acted like Tonkawas, a tribe of Indians. Tonkawa was about ten miles west of Hamilton. The school later moved to the Comanche road. The Tonkawa Indians were the fiercest known."
