Joe Malcolm Sanders, 57, died Nov. 7 at Hamilton. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Nov. 11 at the First United Methodist Church in Evant with Rev. James Marrs officiating. 

He was born May 17, 1947 in Mineral Wells, the son of Major and Elma Henderson Sanders. At the age of two his family moved to Grayford and then to Fort Worth where he graduated from Polytech High School. He received a bachelor degree from the University of Texas at Arlington and his master degree from Texas Christian University in Fort Worth. 

He was married to Barbara Sellers on July 1, 1976 in Fort Worth. 

Mr. Sanders taught high school English at Polytech in Fort Worth prior to moving to Stephenville. In 1999 they moved to Evant to make their home. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church at Evant. 

Survivors include his wife of Hamilton; a son, James Mi-chael Sanders and wife Amanda of Galveston; two sisters, Cheryl Ruth Sanders of Fort Worth and Louise Blackerby of Mineral Wells; four brothers, John Weldon Sanders of AZ., Leslie Burton Sanders of Bowie, Gerald Ray Sanders of Tyler, Russell Penn Sanders of Fort Worth as well as a number of nieces and nephews. 

Family visitation will be at the Riley Funeral Home Chapel from 6-8 p.m. Nov. 10.

SCHNEIDER, TERESA LOUISE "TERRY"

Teresa "Terry" Louise (Acree) Schneider, 49, died Oct. 26, 2003 in the Augusta Medical Center, Fishersville. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Nov. 1 in the Fishersville United Methodist Church by Pastors James A. Harris and Hugh T. Harris. Burial will be private. 

She was born on Oct. 25, 1954, in Amarillo, the daughter of Mary Elaine (Stringer) (Acree) Browne and Donald E. Acree. She was married to Richard B. Schneider on May 24, 1980. 

Mrs. Schneider was the office manager of the Shenandoah Valley Office on Youth, Waynesboro. 

She was a member of Fishersville United Methodist Church where she taught Junior High Sunday School. She was vice chairperson of Casa de Amistad Hispanic Ministry of the Staunton District United Methodist Church. 

Survivors include her husband; her parents; a son, Brian Richard Schneider; a daughter, Kimberly Dawn Schneider; three sisters, Tammy Gausman and her husband, Jon; Jean Bell and husband Pat, and Carla Solari and husband Dan; step-mother, Carolyn Acree; three nieces and three nephews, Kyle and Dylan Gausman, Sean and Jessica Bell, and Carmen and Danielle Solari.

SCHRANK, LARRY GLENN

Larry Glenn Schrank, 52, passed away at his residence in Tyler on Dec. 13, 2004. Mr. Schrank was born on April 7, 1952, in Brenham. He was adopted into the family of Raymond and Frances (Kiesch-nick) Schrank as an infant. 

When he was twelve years old, the Schrank family became members of St. John Lutheran Church. After graduation from Hamilton High school, he attended Tarleton State University for two years transferring then to the University of Texas where he studied for an additional three years to become a pharmacist. 

Mr. Schrank’s profession took him to several cities throughout the state of Texas where his fun-loving nature attracted many friends. He was a member of the Kiwanis club and he had a deep love for horses. For a time in his life Larry raised thoroughbred race horses. 

After many years of working as a pharmacist, Mr. Schrank moved to Tyler. Over the past few years his health began to deteriorate. He suffered from heart problems which were complicated by his diabetes. Having been disabled due to his health, Larry made a life for himself along with his two cats Bubba and Samantha. He kept in very close contact with his mother Frances, his sister Joan, and his friends in both Tyler and Dallas. 

Mr. Schrank is preceded in death by his father, Raymond R. Schrank. 

Survivors include his mother, Francis R. Schrank of Hamilton; his sister, Joan Edins and husband Tim of Hamilton; three nieces, Alyssa Whaley, Brynnan Whaley, and Maura Whaley as well as many friends. 

Pallbearers were Otto Berndt, Larry Cowan, Dwayne Cox, Gary Currier, Gary Morbe and Jerry Zschiesche.

SCHRANK, WINIFRED CLARENCE "FRED"

Winfred (Fred) Clarence Schrank, 83, of High Point, N.C. died Monday, July 10. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sat., July 15 at Grove Hill Funeral Home in Dallas, with burial following. 

Schrank was born July 1917 in Aleman. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1940 and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. 

As a long-time Dallas resident, he was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. In his later years, he served his Lord as a church elder and choir member at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Greensboro, N.C. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Elvera Weiser Schrank and sons Gordon (and wife Carol) of Midland, Phillip of San Antonio and Ron (and wife Adrienne) of Kernersville, N.C.; sisters Aline Andres of Dallas and Ruth Willard of Clifton; brother Lawrence of Aleman; and six grandchildren. 

He was preceded in death by a son, Stephen. 

According to family and friends, Schrank will always be remembered for his outgoing personality and spontaneous sense of humor. He was always ready with a quick ad lib or pun. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requested memorial contributions to the Ebenezer Lutheran Church.

Z. L. was a son of Watt Sharp and Ella Callan.  Z. L.'s Abilene marriage was recorded in Hamilton County Marriage Record Bk. 11, Pg. 45.

James Sheffield, 62, died Nov. 1 at his home in Houston. There will be a memorial service at the Baptist Church in Evant on Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. 

He was a retired safety director and independent stock market analyst. Mr. Sheffield was preceded in death by his father, James Leo Shefield; his mother, Lena Smith Sheffield of Evant.

SHINN, JIMMY

Jimmy Shinn, 68, of Stephenville died March 31, 2005 at his residence. Funeral services were held at Stephenville Funeral Home Chapel on April 4 with Rev. Emil V. Becker officiating. Burial was at Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Stephenville. 

Mr. Shinn was born Oct. 20, 1936 in Hobbs, NM, the son of M.T. and Neva Shinn. He was married to Verna Dean Hale on April 30, 1955 in Gustine. 

He was a member of First Baptist Church and a lifetime member of NRA and of the Amateur Trapshooters Association. He had lived in Stephenville since 1957 when he moved from Hamilton. He was a pile driving contractor. 

Survivors include his wife; his mother; a son and daughter-in-law, Jimmy Ray Jr. and Norma Shinn of Stephenville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Deborah and Jim Buck of Stephenville and Kaye and Ted Truss of Stephenville; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

SHOAF, SULYN (CUPPS)

Sulyn Cupps Shoaf, 36, of the King community, died May 27, 2003. Graveside services were held May 29 at the King Cemetery with Rev. Charles McKamie officiating. She was born Aug. 12, 1966 in Fort Worth, the daughter of Johnny Cupps and the late Susan Probst Cupps. She was married to Ricky Shoaf. 

Mrs. Shoaf was employed at Forrest Ridge Nursing Home in Hamilton. She was a family person, loving and always willing to help people. She enjoyed the outdoors, driving down country roads, gardening and candlemaking. 

Survivors include her husband, Ricky Shoaf of King; her father, Johnny Cupps of San Angelo; daughters, Mandi Hannah of Gatesville and Traca and Tasha Shoaf of Albany; sons, John and Tory Hannah of Gatesville, Casey Hannah of Llano, Marshall Shoaf of King and Tyrell Shoaf of Albany; brothers, Jeff Cupps of Gatesville and Kevin Cupps of Mound and two grandchildren. 

The family has requested that memorials be made to the King Cemetery Association.

SIMMONS, DORRIS DEAN "D. D." 

The Hamilton Herald-News September 2, 2004 

D.D. (Dorris Dean) Simmons died suddenly at his home in Cranfills Gap on August 19, 2004. Funeral services were conducted Aug. 21 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with Pastor Terry Atkins and life-long friend Bro. Bill Schibler officiating 

He was born March 23, 1928 in Hamilton County, the son of Earl and Lillie (Troll) Simmons. He attended school at Mt. View and Cranfills Gap. As a youth he worked at the feed mill for LeRoy Troll. Mr. Simmons was married to Anna Marie Surley on Nov. 23, 1946 in Bosque County at the St. Olaf parsonage by Pastor B. R. Makkasted. They lived in Dallas where he was employed by Borden Ice Cream Plant. 

The couple later moved to Tulia where he worked for Alton Lee until December of 1951 when his father died. They moved back to the Gap to help his mom with the farm. He also returned to work part-time at the feed mill. 

D. D. became a member of St. Olaf through baptism and confirmation as an adult in 1955 with Pastor Iner Jorgenson. In 1956 he bought the mill. After selling the mill he went to work for the Gap Implement company, owned by James Lee and Carroll Knudson at the corner of Highway 22 and 219. He did welding. When they began having monthly auctions, D. D. began driving a truck to haul equipment. 

He served on the Cranfills Gap school board. In 1971, D.C. and R. C. Reierson bought their own business, Belton Implement Co. D. D. repaired and painted equipment and R. C. ran the business until 1976 at the untimely death of his business partner. D. D. sold the business. In 1982 he was among the first to have angioplasty. He was the second in Waco. Fourteen years ago he underwent quadruple bypass. 

He went back to work for Carroll Knudson at Clifton Tractor Auction and later bought into partnership with Carroll and Kenneth Wiese. In  1989 the business was sold. He went to work for the Tractor Salvage in Cranfills Gap. He continued to work at Gap Tractor Parts, which is owned by his son Larry. 

Three children were born into this family; Darla Simmons Kinney, Larry Don Simmons and Linda Simmons Thiele. 

He loved hunting and looked forward to going to the deer lease he referred to as the "Hamilton Hilton" and fellowship with the guys during hunting season. He loved the outdoors, including gardening. We looked forward to the fresh rewards he shared. 

He was a charter and active member of the Gap Fire Department. He enjoyed and looked forward to the St. Olaf men's breakfast. 

Survivors include his wife, Anna Marie; his three children and seven grandchildren, Brad Kinney and wife Shana of Round Rock, Blake Kinney and wife Christi of Merlzon, Brandi Kinney of Clifton, Larissa Reierson Montes and husband Alex of Clifton, Ashley Thiele of Cranfills Gap, Kyle Simmons of Waco and Krista Simmons of Bryan. His three great-grandchildren include Makayla, Avery and Brenley Kinney and is survived by a host of friends and relatives. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Joyce Martin. 

D. D. was a character. He loved to tease, joke and laugh. Didn't we laugh, didn't we love and didn't we share. We have many wonderful memories. He was very serious when it came to his family. Supporting them, making sure they were happy and making sure they were well taken care of were priorities to him. A line of a popular song says, "It's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go." That is important and was exemplified in his life. He lived his life to the fullest right up to the end. What more could you ask for? He will be greatly missed and we pray God will get us through one day at a time. 

At the cemetery the Fire Department honored D. D. with a Last Call Ceremony. It is the highest tribute to a fellow fireman. It was awesome. The ceremony was beautifully done, so touching and will never be forgotten. It is believed he was the oldest active fireman in the county. He was laid to rest at the Boggy Cemetery on August 21, 2004.

Attention Cranfills Gap Volunteer Fire Department, Non-Emergency traffic. This is the last call for D. D. Simmons, our fallen fire fighter who has dedicated 54 years of service to the "Gap" fire department. 

D. D. was one of the first members of the fire department and has been an active member since 1950. We feel truly blessed that God has chosen him to serve his community. D. D. Simmons has answered his last call, home to the Father, your work on earth is done, a great loss to us all. D. D. Simmons, gone, but not forgotten.

SIMPSON, INA MAURINE (TATE)

Ina Maurine Tate Simpson, 88, of Comanche died Aug. 31 in a Dublin Care Center. Funeral services will be held Sept. 4 in the Hall and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Matt Hall officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory Cemetery in Comanche. 

Mrs. Simpson was born Oct. 18, 1914 in Stephenville, the daughter of Jess and Mattie Wynn Tate. She was married to John O. Simpson on July 26, 1935. He preceded her in death in 1985. 

She was a resident of Comanche from 1952 until 1966 at which time she moved with her husband John to Eastland. Returning to Comanche in 1973, she was a homemaker and licensed vocational nurse. 

In her later years, Mrs. Simpson worked alongside her son in his business, Solar Interiors, in Comanche. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and a 4-H sponsor. 

Survivors include a son, Bennie Simpson of Comanche; two brothers, Jesse B. Tate and wife Dianna of Brady and Joe L. Tate and wife Monica of Stephenville; several nieces and nephews. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Comanche or the Lighthouse for the Blind in Dallas.

Earnest L. Smith, 83, died Oct. 23, 2002 at a Hamilton care center. Graveside services were conducted Oct. 26 at Smith Cemetery in Purmela with Rev. Robert Parrish officiating. 

He was born July 13, 1919 in Coryell County. He was married to Hope Parrish in 1990 in Hamilton. 

Mr. Smith was a Real Estate Appraiser for GHUD and a World War II Army veteran. He was a Baptist. 

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Betty Sue Smith and a son, Spencer Kirkland Smith. 

Survivors include his wife, Hope Smith; a daughter, Belinda Joyce Davis; three step-children, Katie Siepert, Jeannie Leonard and Sam Leonard; three brothers, Walter H. Smith and Laurence Smith, and Billy Joe Smith; a sister, Antha V. Manning; a granddaughter, Michelle Windle of IN; a great-grandson and six step-grandchildren.

SMITH, GLADYS MAGDALINE (MURRY)

Gladys Magdaline (Murrah) Smith, 93, died Oct. 23 at Gatesville. Funeral services were held Oct. 25 in the Evant Funeral Chapel with Rev. David Bonnet officiating. Burial followed in Bee House Cemetery. 

Mrs. Smith was born April 11, 1911 in Bell County, the daughter of Jim and Catherine Dickerson Murrah. 

She was married to Jessie James (Jim) Smith on November 28, 1928 at Gatesville. 

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grand-mother and great-great-grand-mother. She drove a school bus and helped Jim deliver the mail on a rural route for forty-two years. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Evant. 

She is preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. 

Survivors include her husband, Jim Smith of Evant; three children, 
(J.W.) James Wendell Smith of Clifton; Gladys Allfaye (Faye) Blakley of Pearl and Tommy W. Smith of Hico; seven grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren and one sister-in-law, Lorraine Murrah of Belton. 

Pallbearers were Lyndell Smith, Jim Ed Smith, Leon Smith, Ron McIntire, Joe Blakley and Mike Kellner.

James Earl Smith Jr., 74, of Gatesville, died April 7 in a Gatesville hospital. Funeral services were held April 9 at the First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jack Riley officiating. Burial was at the Osage Cemetery. 

He was born Aug. 19, 1929 in Hamilton, the son of James Earl and Bess Griffis Smith. He attended school in Hamilton, graduating from Hamilton High School in 1948. 

Mr. Smith joined the Navy in 1948, serving on the USS Andromeda. During his military service he served in the South Pacific, Korea and China. He received the United Nations Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal (1 star), a Good Conduct Medal and the China Service Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1952. He attended Baylor University, graduating with a BBA in 1955. Mr. Smith was a member of Delta Sigma Phi. 

He was married to Jean Hix on Nov. 17, 1956 at the First Presbyterian Church of Gatesville. He worked as a gasoline distributor for Phillips 66 in Hamilton and as a rancher. He continued to ranch after his retirement. 

He was preceded in death by a sister, Earline Jones. 

Survivors include his wife, Jean Smith of Gatesville; a daughter, Carole Smith of Austin; a son, J. David Smith and wife Gayla of Waco; a sister, Sue Williams and husband Roy of Arlington; sister-in-law, Janis Hix of Gatesville; grandchildren, Abby, Suzanna and James David Smith Jr., all of Waco. 

Honorary pallbearers were Brad Corrigan, Peary Harrison, John Pierson, Curtis Baker, James Crow, J. W. Blackwell, Bert Schrank and Robert J. Hunt.

John Dee Smith, 77, died Sunday, July 11 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Temple.

Memorial services will be held at the Park Heights Church of Christ in Hamilton Friday, July 12 at 2 p.m. with George Tolbert and Bill Schibler officiating.

There will be no graveside services as Mr. Smith donated his body to medical science.

Mr. Smith was born April 12, 1922 in Georgia. He moved to Carlton and after his retirement he lived in Hamilton.

He was a World War II veteran, a Mason and a member of the Church of Christ. He was an avid reader, loved to travel and enjoyed the company of his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gracie McFadden Tice and his second wife, Mary Janice Smith.

Survivors include his wife, Marie Porterfield Smith of Hamilton; one son, Ashley Smith of Glen Rose; a granddaughter, Jessica Smith of Cleburne; two stepsons, Bob Tice of Jacksonville, Fla. and Billy Porterfield of Mansfield; 8 step-granddaughters and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for M. Corrine Smith, 88, were held April 1, 2004 at Restland Memorial Chapel. 

She was born June 16, 1915, the daughter of A. L. Bullard and Harriett Griffis Bullard. 

She was married to Ross Smith on April 18, 1937 in Dallas. He preceded her in death in 1982. She retired from Farmers Stockman Magazine owned by Oklahoma City Publishing in 1980, where she was circulation manager since the mid 1940s. She was a member of Colonial Baptist Church. 

Survivors include a brother, Jack H. Bullard of Mineral Wells; a sister, Mary Beth Brown of Dallas; three nieces and a nephew. Restland

SMITH, MILTON GLEN

Milton Glen Smith, 78, of Evant died at Hamilton Jan. 16, 2005. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Jan. 21 in the Evant Funeral Chapel with Rev. Willie Clark officiating. 

Mr. Smith was born August 7, 1926 at Evant, the son of Garland Glen Smith and Hestor Belle Smith. 

He was a veteran of the Army, serving with the 61st. Engineer Construction Battalion at Fort Bliss during the Korean conflict. He was a truck driver for many years, driving for Charles Faubion Trucking Company and later served as dispatcher for the company. He became a contract mail carrier, carrying bulk mail and later a letter carrier for the Evant, Purmela route for 23 years, a job he dearly loved and performed as long as his health permitted. Mr. Smith was a hard worker and great provider for his family. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. 

He was married to Nancy (Susie) Irene Caswell Feb. 9, 1968 at Douglas, Ariz. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Von Dean Thomas and a brother, Delbert Smith. 

Survivors include his wife of Evant; four children, Joy Nell Clark of Burleson, Brenda Kay Gartman of Arlington, Lisa Ann Buster of Hamilton and Nancy Irene (Reenie) Clary of Evant; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren and one sister, Janelle Linzey of El Cajon, Calif.

SMITH, RICHARD SIDNEY

Richard Sidney Smith, 84, died Sept. 5, 2004 at Forest Oaks Nursing Home in Hamilton. Memorial services will be Sept. 13, at 10 a.m. in the Riley Funeral Home Chapel in Hamilton with Pastor Russell Nebhut officiating. 

Mr. Smith was cremated and his daughter will be taking his ashes to Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado to join his wife, Sibyl who died in June of 2004. 

He was born Oct. 17, 1919, the son of Dan and Clara Birdie Phears-Smith in Comanche County, Texas. 

He was married to Georgia Sibyl Smith on Dec 12, 1940 in Hamilton. In 1941 -1942 he was employed in Brownwood, Texas at a service station and garage. He served in the United States Army Air Force attending technical schools at Amarillo Air Field, Amarillo and the Ford Motor Company Airplane School on the Liberator Bombera in Michigan. Being stationed in Tonapah, Nevada. He was a Crew Chief Supervisor overseeing the repair of aircraft engines and mechanical working of the aircraft assisting pilots in correction of defects during flight. His Military records were lost for a period of time so he was not able to go overseas with his company. He flew many trips to England with pilot. This did not qualify him however for the Veterans of Foreign Wars because they did not stay 100 hours in England. He is a member of the American Legion. 

From 1947 to 1951 he was employed in Hamilton at a gas station and garage. He, also, attended Hamilton Vocational School in Auto Mechanics. 

In 1951 Mr. and Mrs. Smith and their four year old daughter, Sharon moved to Espanola, New Mexico where Richard was employed at Hunter Motor Company. Later, after retiring from the Ford dealership he was employed at Los Alamos National Laboratories in maintaining snow removal equipment and at Espanola Hospital in the maintenance department and he worked part time at a local car wash. For many years he owned and operated Dick Smith Auto Repair. 

In 1982 Richard and Sibyl moved back to Hamilton where Dick sold tomatoes and other vegetables from his garden and pecans from his pecan trees, until he and Sibyl entered Forest Oaks Nursing Home in 2003. 

He played in the Western Acesâ band in Espanola and with Tillie & The Boys Band and with the The Westernaires at many functions around Hamilton. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Sibyl Faye Smith-Smith; his parents; two older half brothers; five older half sisters; one older sister; one younger brother; two half-nephews and one half niece. 

Survivors include his daughter, Sharon A. Smith-Green-Wikholm of Hamilton; four grandsons, Shawn A. Green and Sloan A. Green of Colorado; Saul A. Green of Arkansas and Shay A. Green of Utah; six great-grandsons, Zachary A. Green, Benjamin F. Green and Hayden S. Green of Colorado, Avery S. Green, Jonah Sidney Green (Richard's namesake) and Adison M. Green of Arkansas; two great-grand-daughters, Amber S. Green of Utah and Jordanne M. Green of Arkansas; one sister, Lillie Pearl Smith-Kincheloe-Kelly of Western Hills Nursing Home in Comanche; one half-nephew; four half-nieces; one nephew and three nieces.

Charles Estes Smitherman, 88, died June 10, 2004 at Oak Grove Nursing Home. Funeral services were held June 12 at Clayton Thompson Funeral Home chapel. He was born in Pottsville and raised in Hamilton. He lived in Port Arthur for 70 years. Mr. Smitherman proudly served his country in the United States Navy during WW II. He retired from Texaco where he worked in the laboratory for 42 years. 

He is preceded in death by his wife, Sybil Smitherman, a son, Danny Smitherman and a daughter-in-law, Mamie Smitherman.

SOHM, JOHN

John Sohm, 91 of Gatesville, died July 7, 2000 in a Temple hospital. Funeral services were held July 10 at Foss Funeral Chapel in Valley Mills with Rev. Ed Mesias of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Waco officiating. Burial was in Valley Mills Cemetery with military honors. 

Mr. Sohm was born July 30, 1908 in Pottsville, the son of Fritz and Johanna (Buth) Sohm. He was married to Alma Lucas who preceded him in death in 1975. He later married Doris Weaver in 1988 in Gatesville. 

Mr. Sohm was a World War II Army veteran and had farmed in the Valley Mills-Moshiem area before moving to Gatesville.

SOMMERFELD, GILBERT SAMUEL

Gilbert Samuel Sommerfeld, 89, died at his home on April 7, 2004. Funeral services were held April 10 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Rev. Ernest Bernet officiating. Burial was in the Woodland Park Cemetery. 

Mr. Sommerfeld was born in Hamilton County on February 8, 1915, the fifth of eight children to Karl Frederick and Hulda Krueger Sommerfeld. 

He grew up in Aleman and was a farmer until he was inducted into the military. He served in the U.S. Air Force in WWII as a Military Police Officer. After his discharge, he resumed farming until he was called back into service in 1950 

during the Korean Conflict. When he was discharged from miltary service for the second time in 1951, he went to work for the Mineral Wells Police Department and pursued a career in law enforcement until his retirement in May, 1978. 

Over the years he served as a patrolman, Chief of Police, and Chief of Criminal Investigations for the City of Mineral Wells and also as a volunteer fireman. He served two terms (from 1961 to 1969) as the Palo Pinto County Sheriff and was the Officer of Security for Can-Tex Industries for six months. He also coached Pony League and was an avid supporter of youth sports. 

He was a faithful member of St. Mark Lutheran Church. 

He was preceded in death by his parents and his six brothers and one sister. 

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Mae Winningham Sommerfeld of Mineral Wells; three daughters, Bettye Sue Parker, Lu Ann Harrington and husband Roy, and Sandra Lynn Sommerfeld; two step-children: Kathleen Brown and husband Wayne, and Larry Streger and wife Anne; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews and other family and friends.

Milton Sommerfeld, 72, of McGregor, died June 19 in Temple. Memorial services were June 24 at Cole Funeral Home Chapel, 1113 West Fifth Street, McGregor, the Rev. Jim Fitzhugh officiating. 

Mr. Sommerfeld was born September 6, 1930, in Hamilton, Texas, the son of the late Ernest and Ottillie (Meissner) Sommerfeld. He was a 1948 graduate of Hamilton High School. He served his country in the army from 1952 - 1954 and was discharged as a corporal. He was decorated with the Korean Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. On May 21, 1965, he married Janetta Adcock in Weatherford, Texas. A-Brandt Furniture Manufacturing in Fort Worth employed him as a foreman for 34 years. He retired in 1981. 

Survivors include his wife, Janetta Sommerfeld, of McGregor; stepsons, Rick Mann of McGregor and Eddie Mann and wife Melody of Fort Worth; daughters, Kristi and husband Paul Ivy of Palo Pinto and Emilie and husband Harold Senior of Virginia; sisters, Darlene Brown of Hamilton, Ruby Braley of Quinlan, Erna Haasse of Pasadena; grandchildren, Kayci Ivy, Hunter Senior and Colton Senior and several nieces and nephews. SPARKS, MARY KATHERINE (SEALE)

Mary Katherine Sparks, 89, died Oct. 24, 2003, in Fort Worth. Funeral services were conducted Oct. 28, in the First Baptist Church of Cleburne with Dr. Danny Crosby and Rev. George Sutton officiating. 

Mrs. Sparks was born in Mulberry, Ark. on July 7, 1914, one of three daughters of Hettie and Marion Seale. She attended Sunset High School in Dallas and was a graduate of Alma High School, in Alma, Ark. She was an avid bridge player, interested in gardening and a member of the Cleburne Area Newcomers Club. 

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Charles R. Sparks. They met while working at Higginbotham Bailey Company in Dallas prior to their moving to Alvarado in 1943. Mrs. Sparks and her husband were the owners of Patty's of Texas, a garment manufacturing concern originally operated in Alvarado, and later in Hamilton, Goldthwaite, Dallas and Fort Worth. 

They were longtime residents of Johnson County, having retired in 1964, after living in Hamilton and Dallas. They retired to their farm near Alvarado prior to moving to Cleburne in 1983. 

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Patty Sue and John Howarth, of Fort Worth; her son and daughter-in-law Robert A. and Janet K. Sparks, of Cleburne; one granddaughter Robyn Sparks, of New York, NY; step-grandchildren, Linda Lyons, Michael Howarth and Brian Howarth; a niece, Marilyn Murphy, her husband, Ken Murphy; her great niece, Stacey Blaylock and husband Gregg Blaylock; three great-great nieces and the nieces and nephews of Charles R. Sparks.

Natha Standifer, formerly of Sundown, died Jan. 11, 2005 in Hamilton. Funeral services were held in the First Baptist Church of Sundown Jan. 13. Burial followed in the City of Sundown Cemetery. 

She was an avid quilter, spending many happy hours sitting at her quilting frames with friends making beautiful creations for the senior citizens of Levelland fund raisers. After moving to Hamilton to be near her daughter, she was in a quilting club for five years and made numerous quilts at home for her family. 

Mrs. Standifer was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hamilton, the Order of Eastern Star and Rebecca Lodge of Levelland. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Georgia Frey; her husband, Lee Roy on Dec. 8, 1981; two brothers, Norman Frey and Edgar Frey; three sisters, Bessie Null, Verna Nelson and Oleta Frey. 

Survivors include one son, Bruce Standifer and wife Susan of Beaumont, two daughters, Mary Ann Arnold and husband Don of Houston; Leoma Larance of Hamilton; nine grandchildren, Terry Don Arnold, Derinda Denise Arnold Dejong, Charles Todd Arnold, Richard Lee Standifer, Kristie Standifer, Alicia Standifer, William Allen Larance, Misty Dawn Larance Slone and Robert Lee Larance; 14 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and loving friends.

Selvin Keith Stanford, 88, of North Richland Hills, died May 9 at a Bedford hospital. Funeral services were held May 12 at Mount Olivet Chapel in Fort Worth. Burial was in Bluebonnet Hills Memorial Park. 

He was born Jan 26, 1917 in Hamilton County, the son of Richard Hiram Stanford and Edna Pearl Sayles. He was married to MayBelle Sharp, daughter of William Henry Sharp and Ida May Ward on March 2, 1935 in Hamilton County. 

Mr. Stanford was devoted to his family, a loving and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He re-tired from Birdville School District. He was preceded in death by his wife and a grandson, Les Griffin.

Joseph Emanuel Stenstrom, 82, died May 11, 2004 at his home in Hamilton. Funeral services were held May 14 at the Riley Funeral Home Chapel in Hamilton. 

Mr. Stenstrom was born April 14, 1922, at Bemidji, Minn., the son of Andrew Manuel and Alvira Fossum Stenstrom. 

He entered the Navy on July 1, 1943, where he was a pilot serving during World War II and Korea. While serving his country he was awarded three Distinguished Flying Crosses, Presidential Unit Citation, Navy Commendation Ribbon with Combat V, World War II Victory Medal, six Air Medals, China Service, Korean Service, United Nation Service, Asiatic-Pacific Area with three stars, Korean Presidential Unit Citation and the National Defense Service Ribbon. He served as a pilot for the FAA for a number of years. 

He was married to Annie Mozelle Cooper in December of 1952, at Yuma, Ariz. She preceded him in death on April 24, 1999. They had made their home in Hamilton since 1970.

Thomas Dorsey (Steve) Stephenson, 96, died at Hamilton Dec. 13, 2004. Funeral services were held Dec. 16, in the Riley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J. C. Tankersley officiating. Burial was in Lamesa Memorial Park Cemetery Dec. 17. 

He was born Feb. 20, 1908 at Carbon, the son of Henry and Effie Bishop Stephenson. He was a farmer, rancher and a mechanic working for Gautier Implement Co and International Harvester Dealer prior to retirement. 

Mr. Stephenson was married to Mary Stevens on June 6, 1940. He was known as Dude, Steve, Shorty, a man that loved people, dancing and helping other people. He enjoyed play-ing games and climbing trees with his grandchildren. 

He is preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and six brothers.

STEVENS, MARGIE KAY (SHELDON) (BALERA)

Margie Kay Boone Stevens died Dec. 10, 2004 in Artesia, NM where she lived with her daughter and son-in-law. 

She was born at San Salines, on Aug. 30, 1906 and grew up around Leon Junction She was married to West Sheldon in 1921 at Mount Calm. He preceded her in death in May, 1941. The couple had two daughters and four sons. 

She was married to Connie Balera in 1963 at Sea Graves. They had two boys. The couple owned the CM Diner in Yuma for many years. 

Three of Mrs. Stevens’s sons, a daughter and a grandson were killed in a car wreck in November, 1976. She was also preceded in death by four brothers and three sisters. 

She was married to Bill Stevens in May, 1985. He preceded her in death in 1988. Mrs. Stevens was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother as well as a good friend and neighbor. She attended church for many years at Victory Temple in Hamilton.

STEWART, JOAN NATALIE (HOLLOWAY)

Joan Natalie Stewart died Dec. 1, 2004. A celebration of her life was held Dec. 4 and funeral services were held Dec. 5 in the Heartland Funeral Home in Brownwood. Burial was at the Lost Creek Cemetery in May. 

She was born April 8, 1946 in Hamilton, the daughter of James and Ruby Nell Holloway. She attended school in Hamilton and Brownwood, graduating from Brownwood in 1964. She attended Howard Payne University and taught at Brownwood ISD, retiring in 1999. 

She was married to Troy Stewart on June 4, 1966 in Brownwood. She enjoyed raising and showing cutting horses and was interested in all aspects of nature, traveling, quilting and taking care of her family. 

Mrs. Stewart was preceded in death by her mother, mother-in-law and a brother.

Wilma Lea Burlin Stone 69 of Hamilton died at the Hamilton Nursing Home Dec. 6 after an extended illness. Memorial services were held at the Riley Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Gilbert Donald and Rev. Richard Johnston officiating. 

Mrs. Stone was born June 16, 1933 at Liberty, the daughter of Henry and Stella Davis Burlin. After completing high school at Hull-Daisetta she earned a bachelor degree from the University of Sam Houston at Huntsville and became a schoolteacher a profession that she loved. 

After entering the Hamilton Nursing Home she still extended her love for teaching by helping the children of the staff with their homework. She was devoted to her church, loved reading and teaching from the bible and sharing her faith with others. 

She was married to Hoyt Sleeper Morgan from 1953 to 1969. She was married to Floyd Stone from 1972 to 1974.

Harold Glen Stratton, 51, of Moody died August 6, 2004 at the Olin E. Teague Veterans' Center in Temple. A memorial service will be held August 22 at the Hasse Community Center. 

He was born July 30, 1953 in Brownwood, the son of Jesse and Anita Jo Stratton. He served in the Navy and was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for several years until a disability caused an early retirement. He was preceded in death by his step-father, James McMillian.

STREATER, BILLY CLARKE

Billy Clarke Streater, 63, died Dec. 16, 2004 at MD Anderson Cancer Hospital in Houston. He was born Oct. 17, 1941 in Hamilton County, the son of Garlon and Zora Dell Streater. He grew up on the family ranch in Hamilton County and attended school in Fairy where he graduated high school. He was also a graduate of Southwest Texas State University in 1967. Throughout his life, Mr. Streater enjoyed success in a variety of colorful vocations. He was a professional rodeo cowboy, competing in bull riding, saddle bronc and bareback bronc riding. He also ran a successful ranching operation for many years. 

Mr. Streater was very successful in the entertainment industry for almost 30 years. Some of his modeling credits included Ryan’s, Shepler’s, Wall’s Industries and Panhandle Slim. His acting credits include parts in the movies, Wyatt Earp, The quick and the Dead, Getting Even, War Party, the series Dallas and numerous other TV commercials and series. 

He was an avid hunter, outdoorsman and conservationist. He played an instrumental role in establishing whitetail deer in Hamilton County in the early 1960s. He spent his last few years sharing his passion for the outdoors with his son, Zane, operating a successful hunting operation in Texas and New Mexico. Mr. Streater was a man who pursued his dreams to the end. He is preceded in death by his parents, Garlon and Zora Dell Streater. 

Survivors include his daughter, Sonja Streater Nickell and husband Ramsey of Northridge, Calif; his son, Zane Streater of Hamilton; two sisters, Doris Allison and husband Tex of Hamilton and Shirley New of Lubbock; two brothers, Keith Streater and wife Delia of Hamilton and Mickey Streater and wife Terri of Hamilton; numerous other family and friends. STROUD, HAROLD HUNTER , JR.

Harold Hunter Stroud, Jr., 80, died June 23, 2002. Burial was at Ft. Bliss National Cemetery. "Junior" as he was known, was born September 19, 1921 in Waxahachie, the son of Rosa Lucille Petty and Harold Hunter Stroud Sr. 

He graduated from Hamilton High School in 1939 and attended the University of Texas and John Tarleton State College, studying agriculture science until his enlistment in the Untied States Marine Corp during World War II. He loved the Corp and his assignment as a Corsair fighter pilot instructor at Camp Le June, N.C. 

After the war, he returned to Hamilton and the family business of ranching and Texan Theatre. He was innovative in his concept of creating the "281 Drive-In" theatre with a swimming pool in the complex (noted in "Drive-Ins of America", exemplifying unique Drive-Ins in the US). 

He was a member of the Hamilton Lions Club and a life long member and deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of Hamilton. He raised, competed and won with his Appaloosa Horses on National level, always enjoying the company of fellow horsemen. He was very proud of his work with the Eagle Scout Troops 
(teaching native American culture in the 1950's) that he worked with over the years, seeing many fine men pass through his group. 

He relocated to El Paso, Texas in the 70's and established a landscape irrigation company for the next 20 years. He was considered an expert on native Texas plant material serving as a source for several books. He worked with his family, eventually retiring with his wife Billie at his side. He was a proud, patriotic son of Texas, a sportsman, a history buff, a conservationist and a wonderful father and husband. 

His parents, his aunt Wilhelmina Edgar and his daughter Linda this year, preceded him in death.

Emil Tyson (E. T.) Stubbs, 68, died Oct. 20, 2003 in a Waco 
hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 24 at Woodway First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jeff Smith and Dr. Bill Austin officiating. Burial will follow at Waco Memorial North. 

Mr. Stubbs was born Feb. 9, 1935 in Hamilton County, the son of James Clifford and Hilma (Enger) Stubbs. He was christened and confirmed at St. Olafs Lutheran Church in Cranfills Gap, Texas where he spent his youth. He graduated from high school in 1953. Mr. Stubbs served in the United States Army and attended Texas A&M University. He worked in the Waco office of the Texas Farm Bureau for more than 21 years where he met his wife. He married Dorothy Feller on October 14, 1960 in Waco. 

He moved to Giddings, Texas in 1980 and served as General Manager for Giddings Petroleum Corporation until his retirement in early 2001, when he returned to the Waco area. 

Mr. Stubbs was an active member of the Robinson Drive Method-ist Church serving on the administrative board. He was later a member of the United Methodist Church in Giddings, again serving on the administrative board. 

While in Giddings he was active in the community serving for three years as a director of the Giddings Chamber of Commerce, with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, and as a member of the Noon Lions Club. He also served on the advisory board of the Giddings State School. Upon returning to Waco he became a member of the Woodway First United Methodist Church enjoying the company of other members of the OWLS organization. Mr. Stubbs was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. He was preceded in death by his mother and father; stepmother, Rachel (Bonner) Stubbs; brothers, Leo Carroll, Gene Felix and John Clinton Stubbs and sister Elnora Estelle Burns. 

Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Dorothy Stubbs of McGregor; sons, Jeffrey Scott and wife Danna Stubbs of Headland, Alabama; Barry Glenn and wife Wendy Stubbs of Huntsville; daughters, Terri Deanne and husband Johnny Taylor of Lorena; and Linda Carol Stubbs of Spring; grandchildren, Christopher and Deanna Stubbs, Jessica and Tyson Taylor, and Dylan and Morgan Stubbs; brothers, Charles and wife Gloria Stubbs of Livingston; James and wife Barbara Stubbs of West Columbia; sisters, Betty Haven of Garland, and Sarah and husband Robert Gohlke of Gatesville; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and in-laws, as well as loving friends too numerous to count.

STUBBS, GEORGE BENTON

George Benton Stubbs, 85, of Gatesville, died March 2, 2005 in a Temple nursing facility. 

Funeral service were held-March 5 at Scott’s Funeral Home chapel with burial at Boggy Creek Cemetery in Cranfills Gap. He was born Jan. 18, 1920 in Jonesboro, the son of Emmett and Emma Stubbs. 

He was a Navy veteran of WW II. He retired from the Gatesville State School for boys in 1979. He was married to Iraida Montavo in Mayaquez, Puerto Rico on July 31, 1950. She preceded him in death on Oct. 22, 1986. He was also preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Wayne Stubbs. 

Survivors include his wife, Dora Stubbs of Gatesville; a son, George Michael Stubbs and wife Teresa of Huntsville; a sister, Charlene Coker of Clifton; grandchildren, William Benton “Ben” Stubbs, Miranda Stubbs and Chelsea Stubbs; stepchildren, Ann Swader and husband Ed of Gatesville, Jose Pena Jr. and wife Laura, Victor Pena and Martin Pena, all of Dallas, Ricky Pena and wife Beverly of Gatesville; 10 step-grandchildren and several great step-children.

SRYGLEY, RUDY GILBERT "GIL"

Rudy Gilbert "Gil" Srygley 72 of Evant died Nov. 16, 2004 at Hamilton. Funeral services were held Nov. 19 in the First Baptist Church at Evant with Rev. David Bonnet, Rev. John Weaver and Rev. Wade Lackey officiating. Burial followed in the Springtown Cemetery at Springtown. 

Mr. Srygley was born July 6, 1932 at Springtown, the son of Verlin Odell Srygley and Willie Mae Urban Srygley. 

In 1953 he entered the Army to serve his country taking his basic training at Fort Hood while being housed in tents. After basic training he served in Germany being released from active duty on Jan. 
1, 1955 and received his discharge from the reserves on Dec. 31, 
1960. 

On June 8, 1956 at Fort Worth, Texas he was married to Scottie Joe Pearson. Mr. Srygley worked in steel construction in Dallas while they lived in Fort Worth until 1984 when they moved to Breckenridge to work on a ranch taking care of Brangus cattle. 

In February of 1994 the couple moved to Evant where Mr. Srygley went to work for Paul Ray Wilkinson as ranch manager on the Bailey Creek Ranch until earlier this year when his health forced him to retire. 

He was an honest man, a unique individual, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was extremely proud of his grandchildren with two of them serving in the armed forces. 

Survivors include his wife, Jo Srygley of Evant; three children and their spouses, Dana and Yair Kempler of West Hills, Calif., Ronald and Kathy Srygley of Carthage, Mo. and Lee Ann and Stan Street of Oklahoma City, Okla; three grandsons; three step-grand-daughters; one great-grandson and one sister Barbara Joan Rice of Fort Worth. 

He is preceded in death by his parents and one sister. 

Pallbearers were Burl Robinson, Wilburn Coleman, Charles Williams, J. E. Jenning, Wendell Finley, T. R. Thomas, James Hutcheson, Jimmy Hutcheson and Loyd Lynch.

SUMMERHAYS, SALLY (OLSAVER) (DIAZ) "The Hamilton Herald-News" August 19, 2004 

Sally Olsaver Summerhays, 65, lost her courageous five-year battle with cancer on August 13 at her home in Hamilton. Memorial services were held at Riley Funeral Home with Father Stan Sullivan officiating. 

She was born Nov. 25, 1938 in Cleveland, Ohio, the daughter of Edward Harrison Olsaver and Frances Morse Olsaver. Her father was killed in a car accident when she was eight years old. Her mother then married Joseph William Robertson. Mrs. Summerhays always considered "Skipper" her second father. 

As World War II was ending in 1945, Mrs. Summerhays and her younger sister, Polly, moved with their parents to Southern California. 

She was married to Aquilino Diaz II on Feb. 23, 1956. She and Jack had three sons, Aquilino III, Garry Anthony and Daniel Scott Diaz. She later married Richard John Summerhays on Sept. 30, 1972. The couple continued living in Southern California until 1993 when they moved to Hamilton. After moving to Hamilton, Dick was diagnosed with Early On-Set Alzheimer's. Mrs. Summerhays spent the next three years caring for Dick until his death in 1996. 

She was a professional interior designer, licensed with ASID. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants. While living in Hamilton, Mrs. Summerhays became actively involved in enhancing the life of Hamilton. Until recently, she served five years on the Hamilton EDC Board, making the purposed Recreation Park and Sports Complex her priority. She also served on the Hamilton Civic Theatre Board and was a member of the Colonial Study Club and the Maude Shockley Art Club. She attended St. Mary's Episcopal Church. 

Mrs. Summerhays designed and redesigned many of Hamilton's home interiors over the past several years. She used her distinctive talents, creativity and vision to enhance many of Hamilton's projects, anonymously designing the new "Welcome to Hamilton" sign. 

Mrs. Summerhays had a flare and passion for giving life to old houses. Her independence and indomitable spirit are the characteristics that made her unique. She lived life her way. Survivors include her sister, Polly Breitkreuz and husband Tom of Redlands, Calif.; three sons, Aquilino Diaz III and wife Elaine of Wistow, England, Garry Diaz and wife Nancy of Hamilton and Danny Diaz of Killeen; six grandchildren and one great-grandson. Memorials may be made to Hamilton's Pecan Creek Community Recreation Park, 200 East Main, Hamilton.
