1897 SKETCHES OF PIONEER CITIZENS OF HAMILTON
PAGE 17
The earliest old newspaper brought to the County News
office for review is a copy of a special edition of "The Hamilton
Herald," published by C. M. Boynton on Wednesday, June 7, 1897--
almost 41 years ago. The paper gives a brief summary of the resources of
the county at that time, the advantages it offered to home seekers, and
sketches of leading business men.
The paper is 21 pages tabloid size, printed on single
sheets and sewed together. On the cover is marked Volume XXI, No. 23.
Loaned by Mrs. Kelly
The paper was loaned to The News by Mrs. Mary Kelly of
Hamilton, Route 2. She found it about 1911 in a house into which she and
her family moved, three miles south of Hamilton. Her husband, Thomas White
Kelly, died in 1922, but two of his brothers, John and Robert Kelly still
live here.
Two sons of Mrs. Mary Kelly live here also. One of them,
Neal, lives on Route 2, and the other A. H. , lives on Route 1. The
original Texas Kelly, J. J. came to Texas in 1857 settling where
Stephenville now is.
Churches Here
The first two pages of the 1897 edition carry
advertisements only., and pages three and four are torn out. They
evidently carried a general description of Hamilton, for on page 5 is the
end of such a description. To quote from that page:
Villages in the county at that time were listed as Carlton,
Pottsville, Indian
Gap, Gentry’s Mill, Star,
Shive, Lanham,
Knox, Ohio, Fairy, and
Leesville. Most of them, it is stated, had their
stores, post offices, mills, gins, and other accompaniments of the small
town.
Hico, listed separate from the villages, was the
principal shipping point, with a population of about 1,500.
The villages named still exist as thriving villages or
communities, though Knox has been changed to Aleman
and Leesville is now
Union. Many people still refer to the church at Union as Leesville.
Personal Sketches
Twelve pages of the 1897 special; are devoted to
personal write-ups of men and businesses prominent here at that time. J. T.
James, described as representing several businesses, leads the list.
