J. T. JAMES --1897
[JOHN THOMAS JAMES]
J. T. James represented several businesses. He came to
Hamilton in 1876, and with Z. C. Law engaged in the drug business. They started the first
regular drug store in Hamilton. Describing Mr. James’ activities, the
paper states:
"James did a lucrative business, and in the course
of a few years they established the first bank in the county, which they
carried on in connection with their drug business. About 12 years ago
(1885). Mr. James dissolved his connection with Mr. Law and formed a
partnership with Dr. Geo. F. Perry in the same line of trade. Soon after
he added to his other business that of placing mortgage loans for Eastern
capitalists on real estate, and up to date (1897) he negotiated loans in
this and adjoining counties to the amount of over $500,000. He is also
operating for six or seven foreign and American fire insurance companies
in which he does a large business. He is also vice-president of the board
of directors of Hamilton National Bank. He has also been engaged for the
past year in getting up an abstract of land titles for Hamilton County
that will be the most complete and accurate of the kind in this section of
the state. Judge J. G. W. Pierson, who is well-known as an accurate and
painstaking land lawyer, and has been familiar with the land records at
the state capital for many years, has had charge or this work and it can
be relied on as correct and exhaustive."
J. T. James is the father of Cecil
Bouldin and Malcolm GillespeJames of
Hamilton, and has other relatives here.
