 J. J. CLEVELAND  --1897

[Joe J. Cleveland, Sr.]

Mr. Cleveland was born in Tennessee, was educated at Carson College in that state, and was elected to a teaching position in the Hamilton schools, in 1886. He taught one year and was principal the following year, and then entered the mercantile business with M. J. Hearne & Co. Later he purchased the Iron Front Livery Stable which afterward burned down. He rebuilt it, sold it, and in 1897 was in the drug business with Perry & James. He was a director of the Hamilton National Bank and a member of the board of school trustees.

Mr. Cleveland was the father of Joe, George, and Dr. C. C. Cleveland, all of whom live here. Ms. Cleveland is still living at Hamilton also.
